Jimmy Garoppolo named one of the best backup QBs in NFL for 2025 season
Jimmy Garoppolo named one of the best backup QBs in NFL for 2025 season Matthew Stafford's job will never be in doubt for the Los Angeles Rams so long as he's healthy and able to play. But if something were to happen to him, the Rams have a great backup solution for someone to step in for the star quarterback. Veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, who enters his second season with L.A., was named the second-best backup quarterback by Sports Illustrated's Gilberto Manzano ahead of the 2025 season. Only the Atlanta Falcons' Kirk Cousins ranked higher. "It doesn't get much safer at quarterback than Garoppolo, who racked up 38 wins and made a Super Bowl appearance with the 49ers," Manzano wrote. "Garoppolo can keep teams afloat amid injuries and has the skill set to run offenses smoothly. He lacks arm strength and is sometimes slow to react, but he has a nice gig in Los Angeles as Matthew Stafford's backup. If Garoppolo is needed to play, he can lean on Puka Nacua and Davante Adams." Garoppolo was solid in one start this past season — a meaningless Week 18 loss where the Rams benched all their starters ahead of the playoffs. He completed 65.9% of his passes for 334 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. And that was with backups. If Garoppolo needed to play for Stafford, he'd likely get the full complement of weapons. He's also played with Adams, albeit in an awful season with the Las Vegas Raiders. Obviously, the Rams' season would change dramatically without Stafford. But Garoppolo's signing in 2024 and subsequent re-signing this offseason are corrections from the 2022 season, which saw a cavalcade of bad quarterbacks play with Stafford sidelined. Players like John Wolford, Bryce Perkins and even Baker Mayfield (pre-Buccaneers glow-up) combined for eight starts and went 2-6. Garoppolo likely won't be that bad in a pinch.

NFL quarterback Matthew Stafford abandons wife and four kids for a first-class seat on flight
Matthew Stafford recently left his family in coach to sit first-class on a flight - and the Rams quarterback 'got some looks' as he boarded the plane. Stafford's wife, Kelly, explained on a recent episode of her 'The Morning After' podcast that the couple and their four daughters recently visited her parents and sister in Texas. And while the passer is used to private travel in the NFL, he and Kelly decided to just book a commercial Delta flight. However, what Kelly didn't tell him is that the flight only had three first class seats left, and that she chose to put her husband and his 6-foot-3 frame there by himself. Stafford eventually found out where he was sitting when the family was checking in, and correctly predicted that it would be a bad look. 'He was like, ''I'm gonna look like the biggest a*****e,' Kelly recalled on her podcast, via Us Weekly. 'I go, 'Listen, if people have time to consider you to be an a*****e because your 6-foot-3 self is not gonna sit in the back with everyone in your family who is 5-foot-3 and under, then they've got bigger issues.' Ultimately, Stafford's fears in how he would be would be perceived by sitting away from his family proved to be well-founded. 'As we were getting on, you could tell he got looks,' Kelly said. 'Like, 'Oh wait, we saw you get on with your family but you're up here.' And then you'd see them look for us in the back.' Stafford and Kelly share four daughters together: eight-year-old twins Sawyer and Chandler, Hunter, 6, and Tyler, 4. And Kelly previously revealed that they'll be embarking on a much further trip - when they fly to London watch the Rams take on the Jaguars at Wembley Stadium. Stafford signed a fresh two-year, $84million contract with the Rams over the offseason, which guarantees him $44million for the 2025 season and increases his salary from his previous deal. As he sought a raise, Stafford was linked with several potential trade destinations, including the Giants and Steelers. Ultimately, the Super Bowl LVI winner decided to remain in LA as he enters his 17th NFL season.

Rams TE Tyler Higbee ranked among the worst starters in the NFL
Rams TE Tyler Higbee ranked among the worst starters in the NFL Tight end was one of the Los Angeles Rams' smaller needs this offseason following a season where the trio of Tyler Higbee, Colby Parkinson and Davis Allen all finished with fewer than 70 receiving yards each. Granted, Higbee missed all but three games with an injury, but the point still stands that the Rams needed tight end help. L.A. tried to remedy that situation by drafting Oregon tight end Terrance Ferguson with the No. 46 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft after trading back from the No. 26 pick. But he likely won't begin the season as the starter, even though Higbee was ranked among the worst starting tight ends in the NFL by Pro Football Focus' John Kosko. Higbee came in at No. 26 on Kosko's list, right after Seattle Seahawks' tight end Noah Fant. "Higbee could be on his way out in a contract year after the Rams selected Oregon's Terrance Ferguson in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft," Kosko wrote. "He is coming off an injury-shortened 2024 season but has been productive when healthy. His 79.1 PFF receiving grade in 2024 shows he has good play left in the tank, but at 32 years old, his prime is behind him." Therein lies the crux of why Higbee isn't long for the Rams: He's older, injured and only slightly productive. His best season came in 2019 when he caught 69 receptions for 734 yards and three touchdowns, while Higbee's best season with quarterback Matthew Stafford came in 2022 when he caught 72 passes for 620 yards and three touchdowns. Ferguson is the heir apparent to the position and could even take control of the job early this season. For now, it's Higbee's show. The veteran will be crucial for Ferguson's development early on. The two could even see offensive packages together as Sean McVay looks to add some wrinkles for 2025. But at least the Rams have a plan for the position now.

Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford still ranked among NFL's elite duos entering 2025
The Los Angeles Rams have been among the NFC's best teams in each of the last two seasons, and it's no surprise considering they have one of the best head coach-quarterback partnerships the league has seen since 2021. Head coach Sean McVay and quarterback Matthew Stafford have been ranked the No. 3 coach-quarterback duo in the NFL entering the 2025 season, according to Sports Illustrated's Matt Verderame. It's the same spot they held in last year's rankings, but this time, the context feels different. The Rams are no longer a team trying to reclaim past glory—they're actively building on it. The Rams are back to being Super Bowl favorites after a few seasons as fringe contenders. Matthew Stafford is 37 years old but still one of the NFL's top signal-callers despite having only thrown for 3,762 yards and 20 touchdowns across 16 starts in 2024. McVay is one of the best tacticians in the league, having already won a Super Bowl in the 2021 season. Advertisement Stafford, now 37, continues to defy the typical quarterback aging curve. While his 2024 stats (3,762 passing yards, 20 touchdowns) won't jump off the page, his command of McVay's system, ability to elevate young talent, and clutch performances have kept the Rams firmly in the title mix. McVay, meanwhile, remains one of the most innovative minds in football, a Super Bowl-winning tactician whose offensive schemes continue to evolve with the game. His partnership with Stafford has been foundational to L.A.'s success, especially as the team retooled its roster after parting ways with several veterans in recent years. Only two duos outranked them: John Harbaugh and Lamar Jackson of the Ravens, who will face off against the Rams in Week 6, and Andy Reid with Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City. That's elite company, and fitting for a duo that already has a championship together and might not be done chasing another. Advertisement The Rams may not be the flashiest pick to win it all in 2025, but with McVay and Stafford steering the ship, they're as dangerous as anyone.
