‘Accused murderer' arrested following pursuit, Metro police say

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — An 'accused murderer,' who was free on bond and wearing an ankle monitor but still armed with a rifle, was taken into custody Saturday night as a result of 'precision policing public safety work' by Nashville detectives, according to officials. The Metro Nashville Police Department said the Specialized Investigations Division TITANS detectives saw a black Dodge Challenger commit multiple traffic offenses before pulling into a gas station at 26th Avenue North and Clarksville Pike and sitting for 'an unusually long time' on Saturday, May 24. Authorities said they tried to approach the vehicle, but it sped away on Clarksville Pike toward Buchanan Street. After law enforcement used a spike strip to deflate the tires, the driver — identified as 21-year-old Rico Ransom — reportedly headed to Heiman Street and stopped. Officials said detectives ordered him out of the Challenger, but he took off again and tossed an AR-style pistol through the window. According to police, Ransom kept driving to Britt Place, where he ran into a wood line. However, detectives quickly apprehended him. Authorities said Ransom was charged with two counts of felony evading, felony gun possession, and driving on a revoked license. A judicial commissioner set his bond at $28,000. MAY 2021: Nashville teen charged with criminal homicide for crime he committed at age 15 Law enforcement said Ransom is due in Criminal Court on June 5 on a first-degree murder indictment in connection with the November 2019 shooting of 18-year-old Steven Shelton on 26th Avenue North. Ransom was arrested in May 2021, at the age of 17, for that shooting. In addition, Ransom was reportedly charged with attempted criminal homicide at age 14 after a 17-year-old was shot during a fight outside of Pearl Cohn High School in February 2018. No additional details have been released about Saturday night's arrest. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Newsom announces plans to fast-track California's delta tunnel project

The Delta tunnel project is a plan that's drawing bipartisan backlash. It would take water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta and move it to Southern California. Gov. Gavin Newsom is calling for "swift" action to start the Delta Conveyance Project, claiming it's essential to avoiding future water disasters. But lawmakers from within his own party are pushing back on this, saying it's not a long-term solution to the water crisis and hasn't gone through the proper channels to determine if Southern California can even store the water they want to take. Democrats like assemblymembers Lori Wilson and Rhodesia Ransom, whose constituents depend on the delta for agriculture and business, are taking a rare stand against the governor, saying this issue is not about political party but equity. Ransom said the project is a transfer of wealth and water from the delta region to be given to the wealthier Southern California region. Ransom said the governor's proposal put out on Wednesday is concerning because it undermines the proper channels to vet the impacts of the project. She is now calling for a complete audit of the California Department of Water Resources and the plan. "This could, like I said, disrupt and threaten farmland productivity. We need to know how that's going to look. We need to know who's going to be hurt by this project, and that is what this audit is about," she said. "The state has the ability to do this, and we want to make sure that when they are telling us that we need to move this water or there's going to be a dire situation there, we wanted them to prove this to us." Ransom says the project violates the Delta Reform Act, requiring water plants to rely less on water from the delta. She is part of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee. She has already been in contact with the Senate and says this audit will move forward. The Department of Water Resources says the Delta Conveyance Project would provide clean and affordable water to 27 million people and 750,000 acres of farmland in the southern part of the state. The water would be transferred via an earthquake-resistant tunnel system that the DWR says would sit up to 130 feet below ground. Newsom's plan to fast-track the project came as the governor outlined his nearly $332 billion state spending plan on Wednesday. The governor revealed that California is facing a $12 billion budget deficit.

Panthers select S Lathan Ransom with 122nd overall pick of 2025 NFL draft

Panthers select S Lathan Ransom with 122nd overall pick of 2025 NFL draft Maybe Lathan Ransom was the perfect Day 3 pick for the Carolina Panthers after all. The Panthers, at the 122nd overall spot of the 2025 NFL draft, selected Ransom—the standout safety from the Ohio State University. A Tuscon, Ariz. native, Ransom played at Columbus, Ohio from 2020 to 2024. Over that five-year run, he amassed 227 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, three interceptions and 13 passes defensed. Ransom, as a starter for the 2024 College Football Playoff national champion Buckeyes, recorded 76 tackles, a pick and a sack this past season. He was named a first-team All-Big Ten member for his efforts. Prior to selecting Ransom, the Panthers had just three safeties on their current roster—Demani Richardson, Nick Scott and free-agent signee Tre'von Moehrig. Moehrig, a former Las Vegas Raider, joined Carolina on a three-year, $51 million pact earlier this offseason. Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.

NFL Draft profile and projection for safety Lathan Ransom

NFL Draft profile and projection for safety Lathan Ransom Lathan Ransom spent five years at Ohio State, appearing in 56 games and playing a major role on the defense in his final four full seasons on the Buckeyes. He now moves on to the NFL, where his phsyicality will earn him respect and playing time. His most memorable achievement with the Buckeyes, in a career full of great plays, will surely be helping string out and tackling Quintrevion Wisner for a big loss on second down during the epic goal-line stand against Texas in the Cotton Bowl. Where should Ransom expect to go in the Draft? Let's break it down. Lathan Ransom, Safety Draft Projection: Round 3-5 Pro Day Results (As Reported by The Columbus Dispatch) Bench press: 20 reps Vertical jump: 36.5' 40-yard dash: 4.53 seconds 20-yard shuttle: 4.26 seconds Broad jump: 10'1' The one potential knock on Ransom is his speed. That 40 time is solid, but it doesn't quite keep pace with the fastest receivers in the league. That's why Ransom is a safety, not a corner. But his strength and versatility means he'll have an impact on an NFL roster, as he's strong in run defense (again, ask Texas) and he's more than fast enough to help with over the top coverage or to pick up tight ends. He didn't go in the first round and isn't expected to be taken in the second, but he should certainly have his name called, probably by the end of the fourth round but possibly in the fifth.
