Bad news for Wrexham FC on the injury front ahead of opener

Rathbone, who made a massive impact in his first year with the Reds after signing from Rotherham United 12 months ago, has been ruled out for several weeks after damaging his left ankle in the friendly clash against Sydney. That means he want be involved at Southampton a week on Saturday where Wrexham could have a 3,800 following. Reds boss Phil Parkinson said: "Ollie's seen a specialist but no surgery is required. He's had significant ankle damage. has been in a boot and will be out for several weeks." Striker Jay Rodriguez - a January transfer window arrival from Burnley - will also miss the opening game at his former club Southampton. "Jay suffered pain in his right ankle in Australia and he's also been in a boot. He's due to see a specialist next week so we can get to the bottom of it." Parkinson also provided injury updates on long-term casualty Andy Cannon and striker Jack Marriott ahead of Wrexham's return to the Championship for the first time in 43 years next week. Cannon ruptured the ACL in his knee at Mansfield Town last February. "Andy's doing really well," added Parkinson. "He's back on the grass but it's going to be a long process with him." Marriott is also back after recovering after emergency surgery while out on tour in New Zealand. "Jack had his appendix out and had to stay in New Zealand as part of his recovery," said Parkinson. "He's returned and will be back in full training." Co-striker Mo Faal is also back in full training after making a quicker than expected recovery from quad surgery, "Mo's worked very hard," added Parkinson. "He got some minutes in on tour and he's doing well."

Wrexham ace taken to hospital after hobbling off in agony in bitter blow for Ryan Reynolds

A Wrexham star was forced off with an injury during the club's pre-season friendly defeat against A-League side Sydney FC and was later taken to hospital for scans Wrexham have suffered a significant setback after one of their key players was taken to hospital for scans following a pre-season friendly. The Red Dragons are currently in Australia, gearing up for their first season in the Championship in 43 years. ‌ Midfielder Ollie Rathbone sustained an ankle injury during the first half of Wrexham's 2-1 loss to Sydney FC on Tuesday morning. The 28-year-old looked to be in severe pain as he was assisted off the pitch by club medics. ‌ Manager Phil Parkinson confirmed post-match that he had been taken to the hospital for an X-ray. The former Sunderland and Bolton boss told the club's media team the incident had left Rathbone's teammates worried about him. ‌ He said: "We're really hoping for him and it's a very quiet dress room in there, because we have concern about Ollie. It didn't look that bad an incident when it happened, but it swelled up instantly in the dressing room, and Kev (Mulholland, club physio) has gone with him to hospital. We've just got to keep our fingers crossed." Rathbone was crowned Wrexham's Player of the Season last term and even drew comparisons to Lionel Messi from a teammate as he helped them secure automatic promotion from League One. He netted eight goals in 41 league appearances after transferring from Rotherham United last August for a then-club-record fee, believed to be around £500,000. While the severity of his injury is currently unknown, any time out for Rathbone would be a major blow for the club owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as they prepare for life in the second tier. Wrexham kick off their campaign away at Southampton on August 9 after the Saints were relegated from the Premier League in April. ‌ Rathbone expressed his excitement about participating in the North Wales side's Down Under tour before the team set off last week. "This is what is special about being part of this club," the ex-Manchester United academy player told The Leader. "Not just being part of the community and working with the staff and the players but to get this type of opportunity. ‌ "There are not many clubs, especially in the Football League, that get an opportunity like this so I am incredibly grateful. The furthest I have been in pre-season is Tenerife and Croatia. I am really excited to go out there and experience it. "It is pinch yourself stuff, it is incredible to get the chance to do this. As a player, that is why it is so great to be here at this moment in time. It is a club that is really on the up and you get to experience really special things." ‌ Wrexham initially took the lead in their friendly against Sydney when one of the A-League side's players inadvertently redirected a James McClean free kick into his own goal. Alexandar Popovic levelled the score for the hosts shortly before the break. Sydney sealed their comeback in the second half with a brilliant effort from youngster Joe Lacey, who struck from just outside the penalty area. The match at Allianz Stadium drew a crowd exceeding 40,000 spectators. The outcome was a far cry from Wrexham's first game against Melbourne Victory last week, where they secured a comfortable 3-0 win. Wrexham wrap up their tour with a final game in New Zealand against Wellington Phoenix on Saturday.

Wrexham: Rathbone 'grateful' for chance on Down Under Tour

The midfielder is embarking on his first pre-season tour with Wrexham who have headed for Australia and New Zealand. Phil Parkinson's side will play games in Australia against Melbourne Victory on July 11 and Sydney FC on July 15, and Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand on July 19. The Reds' party flew out yesterday and it is a trip that Rathbone is looking forward to. "This is what is special about being part of this club," said the 28-year-old. "Not just being part of the community and working with the staff and the players but to get this type of opportunity. "There are not many clubs, especially in the Football League, that get an opportunity like this so I am incredibly grateful." Rathbone joined Wrexham from Rotherham United for a then club record transfer fee days before the 2024-25 League One campaign kicked off. He missed out on the club's second pre-season tour to America but he says the trip Down Under will make up for that. "I never did America because I signed just before the season started so this is my first pre-season trip with Wrexham, and it is a good one," he said. "The furthest I have been in pre-season is Tenerife and Croatia. "I am really excited to go out there and experience it. "It is pinch yourself stuff, it is incredible to get the chance to do this. "As a player, that is why it is so great to be here at this moment in time. "It is a club that is really on the up and you get to experience really special things." Wrexham are preparing for the new Championship campaign having secured an historic third successive promotion last term when the Reds finished runners-up in League One. They might only be friendlies but Rathbone views them as crucial in the build-up to the new season which starts with a clash against Southampton at St Marys on Saturday August 9. "I don't really know much about the A-League but another fantastic experience for us," he said. "They are all games that we will take very seriously because we are preparing for a big campaign ahead of us. "With this manager and this squad of players, we know the standards we have set and we know what a really good Wrexham side looks like. "It is all about building yourself up, and making sure you are ready for the first game of the season." MORE WREXHAM AFC NEWS It has been an eventful summer for Rathbone on the back of a successful first campaign at The Racecourse when he played his part in the latest promotion and won the Player of the Season award. "I had a fantastic summer," said Rathbone. "It couldn't have gone any better. "We won promotion, then the great trip away with the lads (to Las Vegas), I got married and went on honeymoon to the Amalfi Coast where we had a really good time so perfect."
