When Tom Cruise surprised everyone by holding his breath for more than six minutes underwater
Tom Cruise always shows an indomitable spirit on screen, which is reflected in many of his famous stunts. The Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning star once recalled how during the shoot of Mission Impossible 5: Rogue Nation (2015), he trained with a freediving expert for a stunt to hold his breath underwater for six minutes and six seconds. 'Normally, people hold their breath for 10-15 seconds. So, I had to prove to everyone that it was actually safe and spend time with the safety officers to show them that it is possible, because I was going to be relaxed,' Cruise says in an undated video doing the rounds on social media. Notably, he practiced with safety officers to ensure the stunt was safe. He then pulled off the visually impressive scene in the film. Taking a cue from his candid admission, let's consider whether it is humanly possible to spend six minutes or more underwater. As fitness coach Varun Rattan says, holding your breath for six minutes requires patience and consistent practice. 'Start by establishing a baseline: while at rest, take a deep breath and hold it for as long as you can, stopping at the point of mild discomfort. Record this time—this is your starting point,' said Rattan. When practicing, ensure your mind is calm and your muscles are relaxed. 'Tensing up uses more oxygen and will increase your urge to breathe. Practice mindfulness or focus on bodily sensations during each hold,' shared Rattan. After each breath hold, allow yourself 10 to 12 deep, diaphragmatic breaths before attempting the next hold. 'Aim for 5 to 10 breath holds per session, and try to increase your hold duration with each session. Any improvement above your baseline is progress. However, if your hold times fall below your baseline, you may not be well rested and should take it easy,' Rattan elaborated. Practice both full exhale and full inhale during your training. Once comfortable holding your breath for two to three minutes, begin practicing underwater. 'It's a good idea to do this under supervision, at least for the first few days. Remember, panicking or moving underwater will increase your oxygen consumption and shorten your breath-hold duration,' said Rattan. A post shared by cineatomy (@cineatomy) What to note? Rattan said that while it is good to challenge oneself and one's ability for a professional commitment, it should strictly be under guidance with safety precautions in place. 'If not needed, don't even attempt,' said Rattan. DISCLAIMER: This article is based on information from the public domain and/or the experts we spoke to. Ishaan Khatter says he lost 8-10 kilos for Homebound right after sporting washboard abs in The Royals: ‘In fact, not only weight…'
Ishaan Khatter recently revealed that while the washboard abs he sported in The Royals became a talking point, it became a 'disadvantage' for his following film, Homebound, for which he had to lose weight. 'After Royals, I had to lose weight for Homebound. In fact, not only weight, when I met the director, he told me to lose all my muscles. You have to look normal. So, it became a disadvantage. I completely understood why he said that. I lost about 8-10 kilos…to play a 21-22 year old boy,' he said. Advocating consistency, the actor stressed that one must figure out a way that works for them. 'This (his physique) is not the effort of just one or one and a half years. I have always been interested in fitness. I am a dancer. So, I try to maintain a base level of fitness so that even if I have to push through with less exercise for a few weeks, I can do it,' he said. Adding there is no hack, he told Mashable India, 'It's consistency. I know it's a boring answer, but it's the truth. Aap lagey raho. Itna hi karo ki aap agle din thak kar demotivate na ho jao (You be at it. Do only as much that you don't get demotivated because you feel tired the following day). Don't push yourself over the edge. People have these bursts of enthusiasm where they go to the gym, like in the New Year, and then they feel demotivated. We are made to move. We are designed to move. Just find your way of doing it.' Taking a cue from Ishaan's confession, let's understand how consistency pays off, even during extreme weight loss efforts. Quick fixes don't last — habits do Extreme weight loss without consistency is like building a sandcastle during a storm — it looks okay for a moment, then vanishes. But if you build brick by brick—eat cleanly daily, move every day, and sleep well—your body will stay strong, and the weight will stay off, said fitness coach Varun Rattan. Your body needs time to adapt Extreme weight loss methods like crash diets or overexercising shock the body. 'But your body doesn't like being shocked — it fights back with fatigue, cravings, and mood swings. Consistency helps your body adapt slowly and safely, preventing burnout or other adverse effects,' said Rattan. Real fat loss vs. water loss Fast methods often lead to water loss, not fat loss. 'You lose a few kilos quickly, but they return just as fast. With consistency, your body burns fat, and not just loses water. That's true, lasting weight loss,' said Rattan. Whether you have a short timeline or a big goal, start small, stay steady, and keep showing up daily. 'You'll be surprised how 8–10 kg can come off over a few months without destroying your energy or mental health — and how it stays off because your habits are now part of your life,' said Rattan. ‘Can you believe…I have dropped cardio completely': Lisa Ray has an advice for women over 40; experts weigh in
Lisa Ray, 53, recently captured the struggles of working out at the gym. 'So…tell me you had a killer workout without telling me. Leg day is challenging with @ @transform_tsk but in a good way. I've read that overly intense workouts that leave you feeling utterly drained can trigger a stress response in mid-lifers and can end up causing your body to hold onto weight. Moderation. Consistency. And a few laughs,' the Kasoor actor wrote on Instagram. Ray also had advice for those over 40. 'Ladies 40 plus – it's worth your while finding a trainer who understands women's fitness needs post 40. Or else finding a discipline that you enjoy and works for you. In my case, Pilates, yoga, tennis and the non negotiable is weight training. I travel a lot so it's not easy to be consistent but I show up. For myself. Not for anyone else's validation.' According to her, intense cardio is not recommended after a certain age. 'And can you believe I have dropped cardio completely? After a certain age, intense cardio is not recommended. I get enough cardio getting off the floor and climbing in and out of the gym equipment any how,' quipped Ray. Taking a cue from her admission, let's explore if quitting cardio is recommended for women over 40. Fitness coach Varun Rattan stressed that almost everyone can benefit from cardiovascular exercise (cardio) in their workout routine, regardless of age or gender. 'Just as we perform weight training to build and maintain skeletal muscle, cardio exercises serve as a workout for the heart and lungs. It has benefits like lowering resting heart rate and blood pressure, and reducing the risk of heart disease,' said Rattan. Cardiovascular exercise is not only safe but highly recommended for individuals over 40 and 50, said Dr Sanjeeva Kumar Gupta, consultant, dept of cardiology, CK Birla Hospital, Delhi. 'Engaging in regular aerobic activity offers numerous health benefits, including improved heart health, enhanced endurance, and a reduced risk of chronic diseases,' Dr Gupta added. Experts suggest that adults in this age group aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity each week, or a combination of both. However, cardio can vary depending on an individual's fitness level. 'For a sedentary person, activities as simple as climbing two flights of stairs may be sufficient to raise the heart rate and breathing, constituting effective cardio exercise. In contrast, moderate to highly active individuals might find swimming a few laps in a pool an appropriate cardiovascular workout. The intensity of exercise naturally varies between individuals and should be tailored accordingly,' asserted Rattan. According to Rattan, just as weight training is essential for those over 40 to maintain bone density and muscle mass, cardio is critical in maintaining heart and lung health and should not be neglected. 'The choice and intensity of exercise should align with an individual's goals, health status, and preferences. For example, you can participate in your first marathon at 70 years and would need your heart and lungs in good shape to do that,' said Rattan. A post shared by Lisa Ray (@lisaraniray) To build a base of cardiovascular endurance, it is recommended to exercise at an intensity where, after 10 minutes, you can still hold a conversation but need to pause occasionally to breathe. 'Over time, increasing the intensity to a level where you must pause after every sentence while talking reflects a higher intensity, closer to vigorous exercise, which can further improve cardiovascular fitness,' said Rattan. Tailoring the intensity and type of exercise to individual fitness levels and health conditions is essential. To ensure safety and appropriateness, it's advisable to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new exercise regimen. Palm plot owners gherao PSPCL office in Mullanpur over prolonged power cuts, demand JE's transfer
Mohali: In a show of collective discontent over repeated power outages, members of The Palm Plot Owners and Residents Welfare Association (TPPORWA) staged a protest and gheraoed the PSPCL office in Mullanpur on Wednesday, demanding immediate action and the transfer of the junior engineer (JE) responsible for the area. Around 30 residents from the plots and flats of Manohar Infra, under the Palm project, assembled at the office of the sub-divisional officer (SDO), PSPCL Mullanpur, to voice their frustration over erratic electricity supply in the region. The residents accused PSPCL officials of negligence and blamed the JE for poor handling of power maintenance issues. A written representation, duly signed by TPPORWA president Anil Rattan and fellow residents, was submitted to the SDO and acknowledged on the spot. The protesters demanded a resolution to the ongoing crisis and warned of an escalation in the agitation if the issue persists. "The power situation has become unbearable. Our daily lives are disrupted, especially during peak summer. We want accountability," said Anil Rattan. The matter was also escalated to the executive engineer (XEN), PSPCL, over the phone. According to residents, the XEN assured a prompt resolution to their concerns. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Following the gherao and confirmation that the power supply had been restored, the protesters dispersed peacefully. "We called off the protest after receiving confirmation that the supply has been restored. However, we will not hesitate to return to the streets if outages continue," said Rattan. The incident highlights growing public frustration with basic utility services in peripheral urban areas like Mullanpur, where real estate development has outpaced infrastructure maintenance.
