40,000+ piece Disney puzzle on display in Calgary mall

Marsha Tatebe and Marg Rabe were among the Renaissance residents at North Hill Condos that put a 40,000 piece Disney puzzle together. Most puzzles need a table, but this one needs a mall. A 40,320 piece Walt Disney Puzzle is on display at North Hill Centre this weekend. The magical puzzle stretches 6.8 x 1.92 metres, which is more than 22 feet wide, and weighs 20 kg or around 44 pounds. It was released by toy company Ravensburger in 2018 as the world's largest puzzle of Mickey Mouse to celebrate the beloved character's 90-year anniversary. This edition was put together by some residents of the Renaissance at North Hill Condos, which is attached to the shopping centre. After sitting in a sealed box for years, Marsha Tatebe moved into the building and ambitiously took it on, but it didn't take long for others to join in. 'It was actually an excellent project for a group,' she said. 'I met almost everyone in our tower. It was really wonderful.' Three women -- Tatebe, Marg Rabe, and Mei Lo -- became the primary puzzlers but many others helped complete the puzzle in 67 days. The puzzle came in 10 separate bags with more than 4,000 pieces in each. 'Mickey came to life!' said Rabe. 'It really was a community effort and it really did strengthen our community.' Though she admits, at time the group, were…puzzled. 'It was difficult. What I found hard, personally, it has lots of solid colours to it which are hard to do and also the bubble border.' Perhaps most impressive? 'We kept an eye on it and never lost a piece,' said Tatebe. The puzzle is on display at the Community Room at the North Hill Centre Saturday and Sunday during mall hours. It was a challenge to transport and required stacking each of the puzzle sections onto a piece of plywood and wrapping it with rolls of plastic wrap and cardboard. Come Monday, the women plan to take the puzzle apart each 40,320 piece by piece in hopes it will inspire someone else to put it together again. 'Rise to the challenge,' said Rabe. 'You never know what you're capable of doing -- and really it's fun!'

I've Seen the New Star Wars Villainous Expansion and Ahsoka Fans Are Going to Love It

Disney Villainous and its many iterations have been with us since 2018 and are consistently some of the best board games to give as a gift. The way the constantly evolves and reinvents itself is part of that allure, as well as the branding opportunities that Disney has at its disposal. Star Wars Villainous has been a favorite of mine for a long time -- I'm a huge Star Wars nerd, born on Star Wars Day -- and playing as the villains of the Star Wars universe is always fun. The latest expandalone to the base Star Wars Villainous game is on its way this summer, July 21 to be exact. It's called Star Wars Villainous: Cold Tactics, and it brings two new baddies for you to play: Count Dooku and Grand Admiral Thrawn, who gets the honor of being the box art. Before we get into more specifics, the word expandalone needs some explaining. Each of the Villainous expansions can be added to the full game, allowing you to pick and choose which villains you want to play in the larger format. They can also be played as two-player standalone games straight out of the box without ever having to own the original game. This gives you some freedom to only buy the villains you want and keep it a two-player game as well. Disney/Ravensburger Cold Tactics adds new win objectives for each of the two villains you can play. Count Dooku needs an active organization at each location in his sector. To do that, you'll need to defeat Jedi and convince those organizations to go from neutral to active. The images show three Jedi: Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka Tano -- technically she's "no Jedi" but you get the idea -- as well as Ventress and Cade Bane as your allies. Having Ahsoka makes sense since the other villain, Grand Admiral Thrawn, is expected to make an appearance in the new season of the Disney Plus show, Ahsoka. Disney/Ravensburger Admiral Thrawn, in all his blue glory, is the main villain of Cold Tactics and has a unique sector board. His objective is to occupy the four main locations on the board by deploying the seventh fleet and by collecting artifacts. Once you've occupied those locations, you can flip their tile to the "(occupied)" state. Sabine Wren and Ezra Bridger are the heroes here to thwart you. Your allies include Morgan Elsbeth and Baylan Skoll, both of whom have appeared in the Ahsoka TV show. Cold Tactics feels like a more, well, tactical game than other iterations of Star Wars Villainous. This shouldn't be a shock if you're familiar with Admiral Thrawn. Whether you've read his books, enjoyed Star Wars: Rebels, or your only experience with him is from the Ahsoka TV show, you know tactics and strategy are his thing. The need to occupy or control locations is a fun mechanic, and I'm sure some of those pesky heroes will have ways to flip your board back again as you play. Villains' goals are often more localized -- collect eight lightsabers and defeat Luke Skywalker are two from the original game -- but both Dooku and Thrawn have much larger ambitions in this new expansion. Star Wars Villainous: Cold Tactics will be available to purchase from Target on July 21, 2025, followed by Amazon on Aug. 1. The Target box has some exclusive parts, including a pearlescent shine to the Thrawn figure, so if you love exclusive stuff, be on the lookout for that on July 21. If you're at the UK Games Expo from May 30 to June 1, you can get a sneak peek at the game at the Ravensburger booth.

Exclusive: Legendary Bambi Card Joins Disney Lorcana in Set 8

Disney Lorcana from Ravensburger has been gaining traction in the trading card space for a couple of years now, and it's one of my favorite card games to play at my local game store. We especially like new set day where we can try out new cards and new game types like Pack Rush. Today, May 6, Ravensburger has shown off cards from set eight, Reign of Jafar, that comes out on May 30, 2025. I was lucky enough to get three of the cards to show you, and I think they just might be the cutest of the lot. The Reign of Jafar leads off from the events in Lorcana's last set, Archazia's island, and previous sets involving the Hexwell Crown. Jafar has reforged the crown and used it to transform the island into his new domain. That means the entire island is far less cute than it used to be, full of scary illusions, and a lot of the fairer denizens are in hiding. That being said, there are still a few cute animals to be had in set eight, including the introduction of Lorcana's first Legendary card from the classic franchise, Bambi. Twitterpated Ravensburger Twitterpated is a low-cost card that gives any of your characters the tag Evasive. In Lorcana, Evasive keeps your characters from being challenged by anyone unless they also have the Evasive tag. This is especially helpful if you have a big, three-lore hitter that you want to keep around. Anything that can keep your cards alive for an extra round is worth having in your deck. It can also be used as ink if you need it. It could also pair nicely with a new legendary card called Bambi: Little Prince. Bambi: Little Prince Ravensburger This new legendary card looks incredibly cute, and also looks like it could be a card to watch. It only costs three ink -- though it's not inkable itself -- and it gives you a lore as soon as you play using the action Say hello. The second action, Kind of bashful, works well with that, as it returns Bambi to your hand when your opponent plays a character, giving you a chance to trigger Say hello again. Even if you don't trigger those actions, you can give Bambi Evasive using the Twitterpated card -- if you're running Ruby/Amethyst that is --and use the three lore he has as standard. Faline: Playful Fawn Ravensburger Faline: Playful Fawn is a rare card for the Ruby set, and has some interesting parts to her card. It's a four-cost, non-inakble card with a decent willpower and comes with Evasive as standard. Its secondary power is interesting, though, as it can gain an extra two lore if you have a character that has more strength than each of your opponent's characters. To make that work, you'll need some hard hitters from the Ruby or Amethyst sets to keep Faline useful. Something like Lyle Tiberius Rourke: Crystalized Mercenary, or Goofy: Extreme Athlete from Archazia's Island would work well. The Reign of Jafar set has a lot of darker-themed cards from what we normally see from Lorcana, which makes sense as the storyline is a darker one than set seven. Introducing Bambi into that kind of dark scenario is a good call, as it brings an element of cuteness and fun to these troubling times. Set seven, Reign of Jafar, will be released in your local game stores on May 30, 2025, and will be released wider on June 7. For more information, check out the full release details at Ravensburger.
