What Instagram is doing about teen safety as Australia gears up to ban under-16s from social media without proof
With Australia gearing up to ban under-16s from using social media without real proof of age, the pressure is on platforms to show they're ready. From December, new rules will require age verification tools like facial recognition or ID uploads. A national trial is underway to figure out exactly how that might work, and while those details are still being ironed out, Instagram is putting forward some new safety features it says will better protect teens now. WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Meta's child safety chief addresses Australia's social media age ban Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today The company recently hosted an Instagram Safety Camp in Sydney, an event for parents, creators, and youth wellbeing experts to explore the latest changes. One of the biggest updates? Making it easier for teens to take action when something doesn't feel right in their inbox. 'One of the big things we're excited about is we've combined the ability to block and report someone into one simple button,' said Ravi Sinha, Global Head of Child Safety. That streamlining is all about giving young users faster control and encouraging them to speak up when they encounter dodgy behaviour. But age verification is still the missing piece. When asked why it hasn't been built directly into the app, Sinha said: 'We require people to tell us their age when they sign up.' 'We take steps to make sure they're not telling us something that's inaccurate.' 'The truth is we can't always get it right.' That honesty sums up the challenge, but Instagram says it's continuing to roll out tools that give teens more control. What's New for Teen Users Block + Report combo: You can now block and report someone in one tap. Safer DMs: Teens will see when someone joined Instagram, with safety tips and a block option pinned to the top of new chats. Extra protections for kid-focused accounts: Adult-managed profiles that represent children (like young creators) now get Teen Account safety settings by default. Suspicious accounts down-ranked: Adults flagged for concerning behaviour won't be recommended to teens or show up in their searches. DM nudity filters: 99% of users are keeping these protections switched on, reducing exposure to unwanted content Early Impact While the new features are just launching, some of Instagram's existing tools are showing results:

Parag Jain, seasoned intelligence officer with key role in Op Sindoor, is new R&AW chief
A 1989-batch IPS officer of the Punjab cadre, Jain is an experienced R&AW operative who has previously worked in Canada, the hub of global Sikh separatist movement. He will take over from Ravi Sinha who retires 30 June. Interestingly, Sinha got no extension, contrary to the practice of the Modi government to give at least one extension to top intelligence officers. New Delhi: Seasoned intelligence operative Parag Jain, who currently heads the Aviation Research Centre that played a critical role during he Operation Sindoor , has been appointed the new chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW). He has also worked in Sri Lanka and was one of the key officials in Jammu and Kashmir during the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. Sources in the security establishment said Jain is expected to give a fresh impetus to the organisation that has seen severe setbacks over the last two years, the biggest being the failure in Bangladesh which saw the overthrow of the Sheikh Hasina government and India having failed to get the pulse on the ground. The other big failure was India being taken by surprise in Pahalgam even though Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir had given clear indications of his intent to heat up Kashmir. The last two years have also seen internal rivalry being played out within the organisation. Under Jain, the Aviation Research Centre was responsible for getting all relevant intelligence about the exact location and significance of identified targets in Pakistan. Jain is known for his expertise in utilising both HUMINT (human intelligenc) and TECHINT (technical intelligence) which gives him an edge in critical decision-making. He has an extensive ground experience in Kashmir which, sources said, will come handy in countering Pakistan's rebuilding of terror infrastructure in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Meet Parag Jain, RAW's new chief and a ‘super sleuth' who enabled precision strikes during Operation Sindoor
The central government on Saturday appointed Parag Jain, a 1989‑batch IPS officer of Punjab cadre, as the new Research & Analysis Wing (RAW) chief. He will succeed Ravi Sinha, whose current term concludes on June 30. Jain is set to assume office on July 1, 2025, for a fixed two‑year tenure, according to an ANI report. Currently heading the aviation Research Centre, which played a vital role during 'Operation Sindoor' by collecting intelligence on the Pakistani armed forces, Jain has previously served as SSP, Chandigarh and DIG Ludhiana, a HT report said. He has also represented India in Canada and Sri Lanka. During the Canada posting, he had also taken on the Khalistan ecosystem there and had repeatedly warned Delhi that it was morphing into something dangerous, the report added. Jain has also been posted in Jammu and Kashmir, where he played an important role in the Centre's counter-terrorism strategy in the strife-torn Union Territory. The HT report also said that Jain was posted in Jammu and Kashmir during the abrogation of Article 370 and Operation Balakot. According to an India Today report, Jain is known as a 'super sleuth' within intelligence circles and has a reputation for effectively combining human intelligence (HUMINT) with technical intelligence (TECHINT), a mix that officials say has been crucial to several high-stakes operations. A HT report said that Jain played an operational role during Punjab terrorism days while serving in Bhatinda, Mansa, and Hoshiarpur. One of his most lauded contributions in recent years was during Operation Sindoor, where intelligence inputs under his leadership enabled precision missile strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, the India Today report added. Insiders say that years of groundwork and painstaking network-building made such pinpoint targeting possible. Jain's extensive experience on the ground in Jammu and Kashmir is also expected to weigh in his favour, the report said. Described by senior officials as methodical and discreet, Jain has held several key roles throughout his career. He was promoted to the rank of Director General of Police (DGP) in Punjab on January 1, 2021, though he was then serving on central deputation and thus received only notional benefits. He was also empanelled to hold posts equivalent to a central DGP, underlining his credentials for leadership in the national intelligence framework. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved his appointment on June 28, bringing an end to speculation over who would succeed Ravi Sinha, whose tenure as R&AW chief was regarded as relatively low-profile.
