Ex-Manchester United star joins newly promoted LaLiga side Real Oviedo as they aim to survive in top flight
Real Oviedo have announced the signing of a former Manchester United star. The LaLiga outfit confirmed on Monday afternoon that they have completed the signing of the free agent, who was released by Villarreal earlier this summer. Eric Bailly spent seven years at Old Trafford between 2016 and 2023, making 113 appearances for the Red Devils. The 31-year-old now joins newly-promoted Oviedo after spells with the yellow Submarine and Besiktas. The club, captained by former Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla, pulled off a romantic return to the Spanish top flight after a 24-year absence, winning the LaLiga 2 play-off final. A statement on their website read: 'Real Oviedo and Eric Bailly have reached an agreement for the Ivorian footballer to join the club from the capital of the Principality until June 30, 2027. 'Eric Bailly was born on April 12, 1994, in Bingerville, Ivory Coast. His journey in Spanish football began at just 17 years old when he joined RCD Espanyol, where he made his La Liga debut in 2014. His impressive performance with the Catalan club led Villarreal CF to take notice of him in January 2015. 'With the Yellow Submarine, Bailly played a total of 47 matches and became an important player, characterized by his power and prowess in aerial duels. 'With many clubs interested in securing his services, Manchester United took the lead in the summer of 2016 and paid a significant amount of money to Villarreal CF, making his sale the most expensive in the history of the Castellón team. 'The defender subsequently played for Olympique de Marseille and Beşiktaş before returning to Villarreal CF on December 30, 2023. At the time, the U19 was going through a difficult time in LALIGA and Eric Bailly was key to the team's improvement during the second half of the season. 'Now, the Ivorian footballer has joined Real Oviedo to strengthen Paunovic's team and become a new signing for the Blues.' Oviedo's campaign began with defeat on Friday night as they were beaten by Bailly's former club 2-0 in their LaLiga opener.

Currently a free agent, the 31-year-old center-back saw potential interest from Iranian club Persepolis FC collapse due to financial disagreements. French publication L'Equipe now reports Bailly is likely to continue his career in Spain's top flight. The former Manchester United man appears close to signing with newly-promoted Real Oviedo, marking a fresh chapter in his experienced career. Bailly's next move comes after his second spell at Villarreal, where he made 23 appearances before becoming a free agent this summer. The defender brings extensive La Liga experience, having previously played for Espanyol before his 2016 move to England. It is worth noting that the player had received significant interest from Saudi clubs, most notably Al Najmah SC, but so far, there has been no progress in the deal from any party competing to sign the distinguished Ivorian player.

Few could have imagined that Santi Cazorla would ever play for boyhood club Real Oviedo when he departed Villarreal at the age of 35 to join Al-Sadd in Qatar. Two years ago he did make it back to Asturias, and on Friday night, Cazorla fulfilled his boyhood dream of wearing an Oviedo shirt in the first division. As a teenager, Cazorla was told by Oviedo that they could not keep him on as a teenager, forcing him to leave the club he grew up supporting. He would end up joining Villarreal, and come through the system to become a key player for the Yellow Submarine as they finished third in La Liga. As Cazorla went onto Champions League heights at Malaga and then Arsenal, Oviedo battled against administration, being forced to crowdfund in order to stay afloat, something Cazorla was a part of. When Cazorla returned in 2023, he took the minimum salary possible, and had it written into his deal that 10% of proceeds from his shirt sales would go to the Oviedo academy. Villarreal pay homage to Cazorla Image via EFE After leaving Arsenal and his injury issues behind him, Cazorla returned to La Ceramica, the place he has spent more time than anywhere else, and played more games for. Cazorla was seen out on the pitch before Villarreal clashed with Oviedo speaking with former manager Marcelino Garcia Toral, and before the kick-off, former teammate Marcos Senna presented him with a tribute shirt with the number 343 – the number of games he played for the club. Cazorla makes Real Oviedo debut in La Liga As the game faded from Oviedo's sight, Cazorla found his own vision cloudy. The 40-year-old looked to be welling up on the touchline as he readied himself to come on with six minutes to go. Entering the pitch to applause from the entire ground, Cazorla finally fulfilled his boyhood dream of playing for Oviedo in La Liga, having helped drag them back up through the play-offs after 24 years absence.
