Soccer-Ter Stegen defends surgery timeline as Barcelona face player registration woes
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - LaLiga - Real Valladolid v FC Barcelona - Estadio Jose Zorrilla, Valladolid, Spain - May 3, 2025 FC Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen before the match REUTERS/Isabel Infantes/File Photo (Reuters) -Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen hit back at suggestions he is to blame for the club's inability to register new players, insisting on Friday that his back surgery and recovery timeline were fully approved by the Spanish champions. The 33-year-old German's three-month rehabilitation schedule has created an unexpected headache for Barcelona, who had hoped to use his injury to ease their Financial Fair Play constraints under LaLiga rules. Barcelona had asked him to sign a long-term medical leave that would allow them to clear 80% of his wages until mid-season and comply with LaLiga's Financial Fair Play rules, thereby allowing them to register new players. But Ter Stegen's announcement on social media that he would be sidelined for only three months irked the club management as LaLiga rules require a player to remain out of action for at least four months to be considered a long-term injury. "The decision to undergo surgery was made after consultation with medical professionals and fully approved by the club," Ter Stegen said in a statement on Instagram, a day after he was stripped of the club's captaincy. "Moreover, I announced publicly the minimum recovery timing that I shall need after that, which had been communicated to me by most reputed experts and always in coordination with the club." SEASON STARTS AUGUST 15 Barca signed 24-year-old goalkeeper Joan Garcia from local rivals Espanyol last month while Marcus Rashford was signed on loan from Manchester United. However, both players are yet to be registered with the new LaLiga season kicking off on August 15. "I would also like to clarify - in light of certain speculation - that all of the club's signings and contract renewals were completed prior to my surgery," Ter Stegen added. "Therefore at no point could I consider that my unfortunate circumstances with the new surgery I had to undergo would be necessary for the registration of other colleagues... Any alternative interpretation seems both unfair and inaccurate to me. "I understand that difficult moments can generate tension, but I trust through dialogue and responsibility we can resolve this situation constructively. I am fully willing to collaborate with the club's management to resolve the matter and provide the requested authorization." The controversy highlights Barcelona's financial struggles as they battle to register new signings once again. Last season, the club approached Spain's National Sports Council to allow them to field Dani Olmo and Pau Victor until the end of the season after LaLiga said they did not have the capacity to register the two players based on their accounts. Rangers 'join race' to sign Arsenal goalkeeper Karl Hein
It's no secret that Rangers are looking to strengthen that area of the squad, with Russell Martin keen to recruit competition for both Jack Butland and Liam Kelly. Hein, 23, spent last season out on loan in Spain with Real Valladolid. The highly-rated Arsenal keeper was unable to help prevent the side from La Liga relegation. He already has 39 caps for Estonia after establishing himself as No.1 for his country. Rangers were linked with a move for Brighton's Carl Rushworth earlier in the window. However, that move quickly quietened down, with the keeper bound for a loan at Swansea City instead. Now, Fussball Transfers reporter Dominik Schneider claims Rangers are interested in Hein. It's said that Sevilla are also keen on the youngster. Schneider wrote: "Rangers have joined the race for Arsenal goalkeeper Karl Hein (23), who spent last season on loan at #RealValladolid. #SevillaFC are also in the mix." Hein is said to be in favour of another loan move away from Arsenal after they signed Kepa Arrizabalaga as back-up to David Raya.

Everton progressing in deal for Bayern Munich's Adam Aznou
Everton have made progress over a deal for Bayern Munich defender Adam Aznou. The Athletic reported in the Transfer DealSheet on Tuesday that Everton were interested in signing the left-back. Everton sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity to protect relationships, indicated a fee in the region of €9million (£7.87m, $10.6m at current conversion rates) was being discussed for Aznou. Advertisement Vitalii Mykolenko remains Everton's only senior left-back following the departure of Ashley Young this summer, with Aznou seen as a more attacking option in that position. Aznou, 19, joined Bayern's academy in 2022 from Barcelona, and made his first-team debut for the German club in November 2024. The Morocco international has made four appearances for Bayern, including a substitute cameo in the 10-0 victory over Auckland City at the Club World Cup in June. Aznou spent the second half of the 2024-25 season on loan with Real Valladolid, playing 13 times for the club that finished bottom of La Liga. Formerly a Spain youth international, Aznou made his Morocco debut in September 2024 and has earned six caps for his country. David Moyes has strengthened his squad with the arrivals of Thierno Barry and Mark Travers this summer, while also signing Carlos Alcaraz permanently following his loan spell last season. The Merseyside club have also extended the contracts of Jarrad Branthwaite and Idrissa Gueye. Speaking at a Men in Blazers event in New York on Friday, Moyes said Everton still needed 'nine or 10 more' additions this summer. The club are still keen to strengthen on the wing and in central midfield.

Everton show interest in Bayern Munich's Adam Aznou
report that Everton are showing an interest in Bayern Munich left-back Adam Aznou (19). The Moroccan international returned to the Bundesliga champions in the summer ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup following a six-month loan spell at Real Valladolid, but doesn't have a future with the Rekordmeister. Following the departure of Ashley Young, Vitalii Mykolenko is the only option at left-back for Everton, and it's an area that David Moyes wants to strengthen. Who is Adam Aznou? Born in Barcelona, Aznou arrived at Bayern Munich as a 16-year-old in 2022, signing a long-term contract. Jochen Sauer, Bayern Campus manager, had positive things to say about the former Spanish youth international: 'Adam is a creative wing-back with a lot of attacking drive. He is quick, technically strong and has good crosses. We are convinced that he will strengthen our youth teams and are convinced of his potential.' Aznou was awarded his Bundesliga debut by Vincent Kompany in a 3-0 win against Union Berlin in November, and played 25 minutes across four games before a loan move to Real Valladolid, where he played 13 games across all competitions.
