Ex-Liverpool assistant 'agrees to join Man City coaching staff' - as Pep Guardiola enlists Jurgen Klopp's former right-hand man as part of his backroom reshuffle

Former Liverpool coach Pep Lijnders has reportedly agreed a deal to join Pep Guardiola 's coaching staff at Manchester City. Lijnders enjoyed two spells at Anfield that spanned nine years in total, and worked closely alongside Jurgen Klopp as the Reds enjoyed success both at home and on the continent. However, the Dutchman will now join a new-look backroom at Liverpool's greatest rivals during that period. Mail Sport reported earlier this week that Lijnders had been earmarked for a place on Guardiola's bench after the departures of key personnel Juanma Lillo, Carlos Vicens and Inigo Dominguez. And now, according to a report from The Athletic, a deal between the two parties has been agreed. Guardiola will be keen to put the preceding campaign behind him as City endured a miserable mid-season slump in the league and ultimately failed to win a major trophy for the first time since 2017. Now Lijnders will join a new-look backroom staff at the Etihad as Pep Guardiola looks to bounce back following a disappointing campaign Lijnders joined Klopp in departing Anfield when the German bowed out following a glittering nine-year stint on Merseyside last year. With his own managerial ambitions the 42-year-old was subsequently appointed head coach of Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg. The move would prove to be short-lived however, as Lijnders was sacked in December following just 29 games in charge with the club floundering in the league table. The departure prevented a reunion with Klopp, who assumed his role as Red Bull's Head of Global Soccer the following month. Klopp has long been a staunch advocate for his former No 2 and heaped praise on Lijnders prior to their Liverpool farewell. 'The most influential guy in the last years at this club was definitely Pep Lijnders,' Klopp said. 'The job he did is absolutely exceptional. The inspiration he is for me is absolutely exceptional.' Meanwhile City are preparing to get their FIFA Club World Cup campaign underway next month in the United States. The club will first take on Moroccan side Wydad AC on June 18 before facing Al Ain FC of the United Arab Emirates, followed by a blockbuster showdown with Serie A giants Juventus.

Former Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders agrees deal to to join Pep Guardiola's Manchester City staff

Former Liverpool assistant coach Pep Lijnders has agreed a deal to join Pep Guardiola's staff at Manchester City. The 42-year-old spent nine-and-a-half years at Anfield across two spells. The Athletic reported on May 27 that Guardiola had reshuffled his coaching staff, with assistants Juanma Lillo, Carlos Vicens, and Inigo Dominguez all leaving the club. The City manager is driving a push for new voices and ideas to challenge him and help him continue to innovate. Advertisement Lijnders' most recent position was head coach at Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg, who he joined after leaving Liverpool alongside Jurgen Klopp last summer. Teams across Europe, including Porto, Besiktas and Ajax, previously held an interest in Lijnders. He only spent seven months in the role and was sacked in December, with Salzburg 10 points behind leaders Sturm Graz in the Austrian Bundesliga. The Athletic also reported earlier this month that he was set to hold talks with Norwich City over their vacant head coach position, having sacked Johannes Hoff Thorup in April. Lijnders joined Liverpool in 2014 as an under-16s coach and was promoted to the first team staff by Brendan Rodgers the following year. Klopp took over in October 2015 and Lijnders retained his position. In 2018, Lijnders was given his first head coaching position as he took charge of Dutch second-tier side NEC Nijmegen, but parted ways with the club at the end of the season and returned to Liverpool in the summer as a first-team assistant. Working under Klopp, the Dutchman helped Liverpool win the Premier League and the Champions League, as well as the FA Cup and Carabao Cup (twice). (Michal Cizek/AFP via Getty Images)

Ex-Celtic player Kolo Toure 'in line' for Man City role

The Ivorian is reportedly under consideration to join the staff at the Premier League giants after they lost coaches Juanma Lillo, Inigo Domínguez and Carlos Vicens. Rivalling him though is Pep Lijnders, who worked under Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers and stayed on the staff to be a key member under Jurgen Klopp. He most recently managed Red Bull Salzburg, his second stint as a boss after one at NEC Nijmegen in the Netherlands. Fabrizio Romano wrote on social media: "Kolo Touré and Pep Lijnders are two options under consideration at Manchester City to be part of Pep Guardiola's staff. Toure finished his playing career with Celtic, playing for just one season in the 2016/17 campaign. He had previously been at Liverpool under Rodgers, who made the decision to utilise his experience. He then started his coaching career at the club before making the move to Leicester with Rodgers. Most recently, the 44-year-old was a manager in his own right with Wigan Athletic. Should he land the job at City, he would be returning to another of his former clubs. Toure had four years there and made over 100 appearances.

Rangers' potential Champions League opponents CONFIRMED as nightmare tie and familiar foes could lie in wait

That's because all three of the Light Blues' potential second round qualifying opponents have been locked in. The draw is only a few weeks away - it takes place on June 18 - with the first leg of the tie itself taking place on July 22/23. So there really isn't long to go, and it's coming up fast with the Gers still not having a manager in place for the upcoming season. While there's still uncertainty surrounding that, there IS now complete certainty on the potential teams Rangers could face in the round. We already knew that the Light Blues would be seeded for the second qualifying round. The Gers are in the league path of qualifying, the side of the draw reserved for non-champions. League winners who enter qualifying follow a separate champions path. The other two seeded teams alongside Rangers are Red Bull Salzburg and Viktoria Plzen. Rangers, therefore, CANNOT face either of those sides. The Gers will be draw against one of the three unseeded teams - Panathinaikos, Servette and Brann. Roger Hannah and Robert Grieve debate if Davide Ancelotti or Russell Martin should be the next Rangers manager in the Coffee Club The teams have only just been locked in as there was still uncertainty over the Austrian and Swiss sides who would be entering at this stage. Austria Vienna still had a chance of finishing 2nd in the Austrian Bundesliga, and had they done so would have been unseeded with Panathinaikos being bumped up to seeded. As it turned out, Sturm Graz ended up champions with Red Bull Salzburg finishing second. In Switzerland, it's Servette who have secured the spot after finishing second. Although they were held to a dramatic 3-3 final day draw by Laussane, Young Boys - who were also in contention for second - also drew their match and finished third. On the face of things, the nightmare draw for Rangers would be a showdown with Greek giants Panathinaikos. Michael Beale's Gers edged the Swiss side out 2-1 at Ibrox before a 1-1 draw away from home saw the Light Blues advance 3-2 on aggregate. Norwegian outfit Brann would be a bit more of an unknown quantity for Rangers. But they have recent history in Scotland themselves. They faced St Mirren in Conference League qualifying last season. Things were finely poised after a 1-1 draw in Paisley before the Norwegians secured a comfortable 3-1 win in the second leg to advance.
