Secret clause in Reed Mahoney's Cowboys contract revealed
Reed Mahoney's new deal with the Cowboys includes a secret clause which could extend his time at North Queensland. It comes as Mahoney prepares to face his future club on Saturday night just days after agreeing to join the Cowboys. Mahoney's deal has been reported as a three-year contract. However, the contract could be extended by a further season with a clause in Mahoney's favour. Reed Mahoney has been forced out of the Bulldogs. He signed the contract to replace Sydney Roosters bound hooker Reece Robson. The Cowboys also spoke to Jayden Brailey and Tallyn Da Silva before agreeing to a deal with Mahoney. The 27-year-old became the second starting spine member of the Bulldogs to leave the club within days following Toby Sexton's decision to join Catalans. The former Canterbury skipper was given permission to talk with rival clubs earlier this year despite being contracted until the end of 2026. His move is expected to see Bailey Hayward become the starting rake for the Bulldogs next year. While Mahoney has largely played 80 minutes since his arrival, in recent weeks he has shown his frustrations when taken from the field to accommodate Lachlan Galvin's arrival. Mahoney played 80 minutes during Canterbury's 22-18 loss to Brisbane last Friday. Mahoney has been named at hooker to play the Cowboys in Townsville on Saturday night. Phil Gould cops brutal truth bomb as Bulldogs' roster management called into question
Questions have been raised over the Bulldogs' roster management following confirmation of Reed Mahoney joining the Cowboys and Lachlan Galvin's mid-season arrival. Galvin joined the club from the Tigers on a big-money deal while starting halfback Toby Sexton and Mahoney have been forced out the door, with the pair signing deals with other clubs for 2026. Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer > The Bulldogs were on top of the ladder from Round 4 to Round 16 but have lost three of their past five games to drop down to third. Daily Telegraph Journalist Phil Rothfield penned a column for The Daily Telegraph Monday morningwhere he declared Bulldogs seemed to be 'a little bit all over the shop'. He also questioned Bulldogs general manager of football Phil Gould's lack of recent success, pointing to instances in the past where he's made surprising roster management decisions involving big name players. 'I've pointed out it's been 23 years he's been out of the winners circle. The last time was when he was the head of football in 2002. Having said that, I think he's done a very good at the Bulldogs like he did at Penrith,' Rothfield said on the Big Sports Breakfast. 'There's no doubt Gus can set up clubs to win a premiership but the jury is out whether he can actually deliver one or if he has to leave and then they can enjoy the success. 'Having two key spine players announce they're going midway through the year for a side that was leading the competition two weeks ago I think is madness. 'Gus has done this previously at Penrith. He brought in Jamie Soward, cut him early. He brought in Trent Merrin and said he'd be the next NSW captain but cut him early. James Maloney, cut him early. 'I just think there's a lot of confusion at the Bulldogs. A lot of chopping and changing, moving Matt Burton to the centres, one wing to the other. 'One week Mahoney plays 50 minutes and get hooked then another he plays the full 80. Bailey Hayward starts one week and then gets benched. So does Josh Curran 'They are a little bit all over the shop. They're struggling to find the right position in the side for Galvin. The young half has shown glimpses of brilliance in his four games at the Bulldogs but there have been some obvious growing pains. The fact the Bulldogs halves weren't able to close out the game against the Broncos despite leading 18-0 with 20 minutes to go is worrying. Galvin and the Bulldogs' indifferent form led NRL legend Gorden Tallis to opine that it would have been better for the club to sign the young gun at the end of the season. 'You reckon in a perfect world the Dogs would have wanted him at the end of the season so he had a full pre-season?' Tallis said on Triple M's Sunday Sin Bin. 'Because it looks like to me that they're trying to please the kid.' Rothfield noted those comments from Tallis, believing Galvin is under further pressure given he's joined a ladder-leading team mid-season. 'It probably in hindsight it might have been a little bit smarter to bring Galvin in at the end of the season and leave him at the Wests Tigers (for 2025),' Rothfield said. 'Give him a full off-season – three or four months – with the rest of the club and it might have been easier for him to fit in with this side. 'There is no player under the blowtorch as much as Lachlan Galvin is. Each and every week he runs onto the field, we don't just watch the game we're looking to see where he is. That's a lot of pressure on a young fella.' Even though Galvin joined on a big money contract worth over $2 million, that shouldn't mean he is guaranteed a place in the best 17 according to Fox League's Greg Alexander. The Panthers legend said that at the moment, he can't find a space for Galvin in the Bulldogs 17. 'What would your Bulldogs side be in Round 27. Let's fast forward two rounds,' Alexander said on Fox League. 'My answer is Sexton at halfback, Burton at five-eighth and Bailey Hayward on the bench. I don't know if I could find a spot for Lachlan Galvin. 'You probably can carry Galvin and Hayward but because Hayward does such a good job in the halves, he can play at the back of the scrum. 'At the moment, and how they are in their development of their career, I have Hayward ahead of Galvin because Hayward covers dummy-half and the halves. Not just covers the halves, but does a damn good job in the halves.'

Bulldogs hooker Mahoney to join Cowboys in 2026
Reed Mahoney is the latest member of the successful Canterbury spine to find a new club for next year. Hot on the heels of halfback Toby Sexton securing a two-year stay at France-based Super League club Catalans, Bulldogs hooker Mahoney will join North Queensland next season on a three-year deal. The 27-year-old had been given permission by the Bulldogs to speak with other clubs despite being on contract until the end of next season. On Saturday, the Bulldogs were yet to announce the release of Mahoney to the Cowboys but AAP has been told the deal is done. The Cowboys had been in the market for an elite No.9 with NSW hooker Reece Robson to join the Sydney Roosters from next have now got their man. Mahoney has been a key figure in the renaissance of the Bulldogs under coach Cameron Ciraldo. He has played every match since joining the club from Parramatta in 2024, which now stands at 64 games on the trot. The Bulldogs do have contingencies to cope with the exits of their half and hooker. Bailey Hayward is expected to start at No.9 in 2026 while recent signing Lachlan Galvin is slated to slot into the halves on a regular basis long-term. Galvin's arrival at the Bulldogs has created a dilemma for Ciraldo, who switched regular No.6 Matt Burton to centre in Friday night's disappointing 22-18 loss to the Broncos - the second defeat in a row for the Bulldogs who entered round 18 in second spot. The positional switch had mixed success. While Burton was strong in the first half against the Broncos, the Bulldogs lost their way after leading 18-0 with Galvin overplaying his hand and errors eventuating. Sexton had a strong all-round match and with NSW centre and Canterbury captain Stephen Crichton set to return from his State of Origin duties, Ciraldo must find the right mix to cater for three halves - Burton, Galvin and Sexton - in the run to the finals.

Bulldogs set to lose another player to rival club as Lachie Galvin fallout continues
Lachie Galvin's signing continues to have repercussions at the Canterbury Bulldogs, with hooker Reed Mahoney set to follow halfback Toby Sexton out the door at the end of the season. Confirmation of Sexton's exit came on Thursday night when the Catalans Dragons announced he would be joining the English Super League club from 2026 to replace Roosters and Rabbitohs premiership hero, Luke Keary. And following Canterbury's dramatic second half collapse against the Broncos on Friday, it's since emerged that off-contract Bulldogs hooker Mahoney will also depart the club at the end of the current season. According to reports from , Mahoney has signed a three-year deal with North Queensland from the 2026 season, continuing the shake-up at the Bulldogs after Galvin's recruitment. Mahoney's move to the Cowboys next season will see him replace Blues Origin hooker Reece Robson, who signed a four-year deal with the Roosters from 2026. And it paves the way for versatile forward Bailey Hayward to stamp his claim as the Bulldogs' long-term No.9. Canterbury had refused to guarantee whether Mahoney would remain at the club beyond this year and the signing of Galvin further clouded the No.9's future. Mahoney showed his frustrations after being benched in the second half of Galvin's first game for the Bulldogs, and there have been rumblings for weeks that Canterbury were prepared to move on from the former Parramatta No.9. Mahoney is a renowned agitator and has had his fair share of on-field disciplinary issues at the Dogs, since joining from the Eels. But he's also been a key part of the Bulldogs' resurgence over the last couple of seasons. Since Galvin's arrival at Canterbury though, Mahoney has been the man to make way for the young recruit, with coach Cameron Ciraldo shifting Sexton to hooker and playing Galvin in the halves when he's come off the bench. RELATED: Cleary calls for NRL to make big change after issue that dudded Panthers Teammate follows Cobbo out of Broncos as Roosters lose star's brother Ciraldo opted to start with all three players in Friday night's defeat to the Broncos, with Sexton and Galvin sharing playmaking duties and regular No.6 Matt Burton shifting to centre in the absence of Blues Origin pair Stephen Crichton and Jacob Kiraz. But the move failed to pay dividends and only threw up more questions around Canterbury's halves conundrum as Galvin and Sexton failed to gel with their backline and close out the game after leading 18-0. Galvin and Sexton played on both sides of the ruck but the Bulldogs were constantly guilty of pushing too many passes and searching for points in the 22-18 defeat. And it leaves Ciraldo with a big decision to make around his star recruit, with Galvin's arrival coinciding with a slide in form for the Dogs, who have now lost two games in a row to give up top spot on the ladder. Ciraldo admitted he was filthy with his side after they squandered an 18-point lead against the fast-finishing Broncos, who scored four tries in the final 20 minutes to snatch victory after a masterclass from Brisbane playmaker Ezra Mam. The Bulldogs were guilty of overplaying their hand in attack, with Galvin particularly struggling to find cohesion with Burton on Canterbury's left edge. "We were trying to land knockout punches when we got some good ball," Ciraldo said after the game. "The Broncos were defending well, and I think we just got frustrated and handed the ball over way too cheaply. We were trying to force it too much." 'I don't think our attack has reached its potential all year, so we're searching for that, as most clubs are... We've got nine or 10 weeks to go to figure that out, but you've got to learn your lessons quickly. We didn't learn ours from last week and take those into tonight.' Burton needs to play 5/8. Galvin should go to Cup and be made to earn his spot. #NRLBulldogsBroncos — All Things Opinionated 🏳️🌈 (@ATOpinionated) July 4, 2025 Tigers fans loving this display from Galvin.
