Smyth County bridge named for slain deputy

SMYTH COUNTY Va. (WJHL) — Monday marked ten months since Smyth County Deputy Hunter Reedy was killed in the line of duty. Virginia Gov. Glen Younkin signed a bill naming a Smyth County bridge in honor of Deputy Hunter D. Reedy. In a packed room at the Smyth County Sheriff's Office, Younkin said he hoped it would serve as a constant reminder of the sacrifice made. 'Deputy Reedy went to work to serve people in Smyth County, and he didn't come home,' Youngkin said. 'And it is so important that we stop for a minute and not only recognize the heroic work of our law enforcement personnel all over the Commonwealth but also their families.' The bridge, along State Route 11, or Adwolf Road, crosses over Interstate 81. The location wasn't randomly chosen. It's a special road, says Reedy's widow Bettina. 'This is a bridge that leads to the farm where we got married,' Bettina said. '(It leads to) where he was raised. It is a huge connection for us. And so for it to have that bridge. It is an honor.' Bettina and the couple's three children along with several other family members and dignitaries from across the Commonwealth were at Monday's ceremony, including Del. Israel O'Quinn and Attorney General Jason Miyares. Miyares said the ceremony was not just about Reedy's death, but his life. 'The impact to this community when we lost one of our heroes and not just honoring not just how he died, but how he lived every day protecting his fellow Virginian,' Miyares said. Smyth County Sheriff Chip Shuler called these past ten months a new normal for Smyth County- the time after 'evil came to their community.' 'We'll never be the same. Huge hole left in everybody's heart, plus our ranks,' Shuler said. 'So, yeah, we just try to go one day at a time. And we're moving forward. We're taking care of business like we're supposed to do.' 'One day at a time' is also how Bettina describes life, but through the sadness, she says she's still blessed with support from the governor and the community. 'Nobody's forgotten. We still have people with us and an outpouring of support, still,' she said. Shuler told News Channel 11 he's not exactly sure when the sign will be put on the bridge, but he says at that time, there will be another ceremony. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Golden Retriever's Kind Gesture Toward Scared Dog Sibling Is Melting Hearts

Golden Retrievers will forever receive as much hype as they possibly can. Everyone loves Golden Retrievers. They're the quintessential working/family dog: no matter what your needs are, you've probably asked yourself, "will a Golden Retriever fit in my life?" at least once. Recently, one Golden Retriever showed off just how kind this breed really is. Her sweet, scared brother needed some help working up the courage to walk by something he was scared of, and she wasted no time making sure he felt safe: Reedy the Golden Retriever is such a little scaredy-cat, but you know what? That's okay! We love sensitive boys!Reedy the Golden Retriever is a little worried all the time. He doesn't like to feel threatened by anything, at any time, and if he does... he gets a little dramatic about it. Unfortunately for him, it was trash day, and he needed to walk by a trash bag. Luckily, his best friend Banana was there to save the day. She walked by the trash bag first, then realized sweet Reedy wasn't following. She jumps into action to save the day immediately, and takes the risk of walking by the trash bag while he stands by on the edge of his seat like, "I can't watch!" It may seem totally ridiculous for a 50+ pound dog to be scared of a trash bag, but you have to understand: dogs don't think like that. They don't understand that inanimate objects won't hurt them, which is why they bark at decorations! If your dog is scared of something and you can remove it, do it. It might seem overkill, but if it helps them feel safer, it's worth it. However, if not, just coax them around it: eventually, they may get "used" to it being there. Or, if you have another dog who's willing to be big and brave like Banana, they'll take care of it. What a good girl! 🐶🐾🐾

Beckley Common Council appoints interim city manager

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — Beckley Common Council appointed an interim city manager during the regular meeting on Tuesday, February 25, 2025. The newly-appointed city manager, Phillip Jarrell, retired from Raleigh County Schools and will serve until a permanent candidate is selected. The first city manager in Beckley history, Michael Resare, began serving in early December and resigned from the position at the end of January. 'Preserving Black Churches' grant aims to save more sites like New Salem Baptist Church In 2023, Beckley Common Council voted in favor of changing the city's form of government to that of a weak mayor and to hiring a city manager, sparking a civil lawsuit from Beckley businessman Doug Epling. WVEA president says WV schools could lose millions if Trump Administration closes Department of Education Cody Reedy, an at-large councilman on Beckley Common Council, said on Thursday that Beckley Common Council will very likely continue under a city manager form of government, despite the recent setback. 'It was a very controversial decision when it was made, and I think that as of right now, we're using the city manager form of government,' said Reedy. 'I don't really see there to be any change any time soon, and if it's to be a change, it would have to go on a ballot.' Reedy added that the next election cycle is 2028, which is the earliest date that the decision could be placed on a ballot for voters. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
