'Derby game is Pompey's biggest for many years'

As I write more than 24 hours on, the sickener on Wednesday night remains on my mind. Disappointment this season has been a regularity for Portsmouth fans and, although never easy to get over, is routinely something we have dealt with - but the manner in which devastation was handed to Pompey in this game will live long in the been there and watched us lose every one of the 15 games in which we have succumbed to defeat on the road this season, that is the worst I have felt leaving an away Bromwich Albion, Derby and Stoke all embarrassing in equal measure and unacceptably poor. Wednesday night was couldn't have asked for any more in terms of defensive performances from the likes of Regan Poole and Connor Ogilvie right up to 93-and-a-half minutes in.A characterisation of the cruel mistress that we call the Championship embodied in a heartbeat - make one mistake with 20 seconds on the clock and face the devastating consequences.I make it seven points that Pompey have let slip in time post the regulation 90 minutes this season. That leaves little consideration other than to think that it's a mentality issue. Too many times a lead or a point has been let slip with moments to spare.A green shoot from the congested Championship run-in is that attention turns very quickly to the biggest game for Pompey in many, many it and the season is defined by a critical victory and only a handful of points will then be needed from the remaining subsequent (or anything but win) and we will be left in nothing other than serious worth pointing out there have been moments this season in which the pressure has been very much on for John Mousinho's side to get a result when really needing mind takes me back to the lead up to both the Cardiff and Stoke games this season where a seismic win was an absolute necessity. We delivered on both those is also noteworthy is that Pompey are the best positioned team at this juncture of any of the other sides desperate to avoid the would not want to swap either our run of games nor our league position with any other team within a handful of points below it is completely in our hands at Fratton Park. On many an occasion this team has delivered on home soil with the backing of some of the most vociferous support in the time to do it again.

'Poole an impressive figure despite injuries'

Regan Poole this week became the third Portsmouth player to be tied down to a new defender has only made 33 appearances in his near two seasons at Pompey but despite the injuries he's been an impressive was outstanding before suffering a serious knee injury last season and while follow-up injuries have affected him in this campaign, he's shown he's still the same Bishop and Terry Devlin have also signed new deals to extend their stays at Fratton Park. While boss John Mousinho is correct to say there is still notable work to do in order to secure their place in the Championship next season, realistically Portsmouth can plan for another year in the second tier.

Centre-back Poole to stay with Portsmouth until 2027

Centre-back Regan Poole has signed a new deal with Portsmouth to remain at the club until the summer of 2027. The 26-year-old has made 33 appearances for Pompey since he signed from Lincoln City in spent more than 10 months on the sidelines due to a knee injury and despite returning in September, following the club's promotion to the Championship, he was hampered further by calf and hamstring issues over the winter that meant he missed another 13 games."After working so hard to get back to full fitness after a serious injury, he has adapted brilliantly to life in the Championship," said manager John Mousinho."He has everything you want to see in a modern centre-back – good with the ball at his feet and aggressive without it."Now he can focus on trying to have a strong finish to the season and help the team continue this positive run of form."Poole's new deal with Portsmouth includes the option of a further 12 months and he joins striker Colby Bishop and midfielder Terry Devlin in agreeing a new contract terms in recent weeks.

'Leeds win was far from smash and grab'

An incredible day at Fratton Park. Yes Pompey have been excellent at home since November but this felt like another level. They've beaten the best team in the division and they deserved to. They got a bit of fortune with two bad misses from Joel Piroe and the benefit of the doubt on an early penalty but this wasn't a smash and grab victory - for large portions of the game Portsmouth were the better team. The performance couldn't have been more different to last week at Luton. I've felt for the last couple of weeks that had all the centre-backs been fit, Pompey could dream of a top-half finish. The way Regan Poole and Marlon Pack played, the injured defensive trio weren't missed. Before any lofty goals are set Pompey need to see off Plymouth on Wednesday. Do that and another year in the Championship is all but assured.
