Immigration Dept to resume migrant repatriation programme on May 19
KUALA LUMPUR: The government will continue its effort to manage undocumented migrants in the country with the resumption of the Migrant Repatriation Programme 2.0 (PRM 2.0). Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the programme will be carried out by the Immigration Department from May 19 this year until April 30, 2026, covering Peninsular Malaysia and the Federal Territory of Labuan. "The PRM 2.0 is a voluntary amnesty initiative for undocumented migrants to return to their home countries without facing prosecution. "Instead, they will be subject to compound fines based on the following offences: RM500 for entering or staying in Malaysia without a valid pass, RM500 for overstaying, and RM300 for breaching pass conditions," he said at a press conference at the Immigration Department's 2024 Excellent Service Award ceremony. Saifuddin said applicants will also be required to pay RM20 for the issuance of a Special Pass. "Foreign children under 18 years of age who had overstayed or entered Malaysia without a valid pass will be exempted from compounds but are still subject to the Special Pass fee," he said. However, Saifuddin said the programme will not apply to individuals who had previously registered under repatriation initiatives but failed to leave the country, as well as those blacklisted by the department, or currently subject to arrest warrants or wanted by the authorities. "For individuals with special legal status, such as spouses of Malaysian citizens who have overstayed, they must report to the Immigration Department's Visa, Pass, and Permit Division for pass coordination," he said. Saifuddin also urged foreign missions, employers, and foreign communities to help spread awareness of the programme and encourage early participation to avoid last-minute congestion before the closing date. He added that the Immigration Department will also double its enforcement efforts against undocumented migrants at hotspots nationwide, calling it the "year of enforcement". "These operations will be conducted jointly with other enforcement agencies such as the police, People's Volunteer Corps (Rela), the National Registration Department and local authorities," he said. Saifuddin also warned employers of stern action if they continue to hire or shelter undocumented migrants, stressing that the government will not compromise in its efforts to eliminate the illegal presence of undocumented migrants. "Employers may be fined up to RM50,000 for each undocumented worker, jailed for up to five years, and face six strokes of the cane if convicted," he said.

Rapid urbanisation outpaces VMC's plantation drive
Vijayawada: Amidst the increasing need for more trees due to the diminishing tree cover caused by rapid urbanisation and the exponential growth of Vijayawada in all four directions, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), much to the dismay of many, planted a mere 7,115 plants within the city limits over the last four years. According to data gathered by the TOI from the horticulture department of the VMC, the municipal corporation planted fewer than 2,000 plants per year over the last four years under the avenue plantation programme aimed at developing a green canopy in the city. Cordia, Rela (Cassia species), Pagoda, Neem, Lagerstroemia, Marri, Spathodea, and Neredu are among the major plant species planted by the municipal corporation as part of the avenue plantation in the city. The civic body planted the highest number of trees—3,260—in 2024-25, followed by 2,045 in 2023-24, 696 in 2022-23, and 1,114 in 2021-22. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Scarlett Johansson, 40, Shows Off Her Real Size In A New Vacation Photos 33 Bridges Undo It has been learnt that the civic body does not set annual targets for tree plantation to increase the green cover. Instead, it plants trees at identified spots under the avenue plantation initiative. "We instruct our supervisors across the three circles under the civic body's jurisdiction to identify stretches where tree plantation can be taken up, and we plant trees on vacant municipal land as well as along roads across 64 wards," a senior VMC official told TOI. The official claimed that the municipal corporation has focused on planting trees in residential colonies and has filled a majority of the 64 wards with trees, except for some wards in Circle-II, where plantation will be taken up in the coming days. Professor Ajay Katragadda, a passionate environmentalist from the city, said: "It is agonising to know that the municipal corporation uprooted and felled more trees than it planted in the last four years. Hundreds of fully grown, decades-old trees were chopped down for the construction of two flyovers at the Benz Circle instead of being transplanted."

Saifuddin: Say no to hate, yes to harmony in Ayer Kuning campaign
TAPAH: All political parties and candidates must avoid hate speech and divisive rhetoric during the Ayer Kuning by-election campaign, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He said that such tactics could fracture local communities and pose a threat to national unity. "Do not make sweeping claims, such as suggesting that the opposing party is a threat to Islam. That is how the seeds of hatred are sown. We must avoid such narratives," he said. "I have always emphasised that Malaysia is a country we can be proud of — one that, in some respects, is even envied by others. We are a multiracial, multicultural, and multi-religious nation. "For decades, we have been a model of harmonious diversity. Since gaining independence, Malaysia has evolved from an agrarian society into a far more complex economy, largely thanks to sustained political stability." He told reporters this after attending a Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration with members of the People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) at the Changkat Petai Community Hall here today. Saifuddin reminded the public that peace, whether past or present, was no guarantee of peace in the future — and must never be taken for granted. "That harmony will not endure if political actors choose to follow a divisive path — framing issues as 'us versus them' or emphasising differences in a way that fuels animosity. This must not be allowed to happen," he stressed. He also reminded campaigners that, while they might leave once the 14-day campaign period ends, the local community would continue to live side by side long after the banners come down. "By all means, champion your candidate. Put forward your strongest arguments — why they are competent, why they can deliver development, why they represent stability. But never resort to hatred as a means to win support," he added.
