Israel blocks Arab FMs Ramallah meeting

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaks during the annual ceremony at the eve of Israel's Remembrance Day for fallen soldiers (Yom HaZikaron) at the Yad LaBanim Memorial in Jerusalem, 29 April 2025. PHOTO: REUTERS Israel will not allow a planned meeting in the Palestinian administrative capital of Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank, to go ahead, an Israeli official said on Saturday, after Arab ministers planning to attend were stopped from coming. The move, days after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing government announced one of the largest expansions of settlements in the West Bank in years, underlined escalating tensions over the issue of international recognition of a future Palestinian state. Saturday's meeting comes ahead of an international conference, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, that is due to be held in New York on June 17-20 to discuss the issue of Palestinian statehood, which Israel fiercely opposes. The delegation of senior Arab officials due to visit Ramallah — including the Jordanian, Egyptian, Saudi Arabian and Bahraini foreign ministers — postponed the visit after "Israel's obstruction of it", Jordan's foreign ministry said in a statement, adding that the block was "a clear breach of Israel's obligations as an occupying force". The ministers required Israeli consent to travel to the West Bank from Jordan. An Israeli official said the ministers intended to take part in "a provocative meeting" to discuss promoting the establishment of a Palestinian state. "Such a state would undoubtedly become a terrorist state in the heart of the land of Israel," the official said. "Israel will not cooperate with such moves aimed at harming it and its security." A Saudi source told Reuters that Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud had delayed a planned trip to the West Bank. Israel has come under increasing pressure from the United Nations and European countries which favour a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, under which an independent Palestinian state would exist alongside Israel. French President Emmanuel Macron said on Friday that recognising a Palestinian state was not only a "moral duty but a political necessity". Palestinians want the West Bank territory, which was seized by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war, as the core of a future state along with Gaza and East Jerusalem. But the area is now criss-crossed with settlements that have squeezed some 3 million Palestinians into pockets increasingly cut off from each other though a network of military checkpoints. The settlements are considered illegal by most countries, as the area is formally under military occupation but Israeli ministers talk openly of full annexation. Defence Minister Israel Katz said the announcement this week of 22 new settlements in the West Bank was an "historic moment" for settlements and "a clear message to Macron". He said recognition of a Palestinian state would be "thrown into the dustbin of history."

3 men guilty in daylight shooting that left 12-year-old boy dead

Three men were found guilty of first-degree murder and attempted murder in connection with a deadly North York shooting in 2020 that claimed the life of a 12-year-old boy and injured three others. On Saturday, the jury returned for the fifth day of deliberations and found Rashawn Chambers, Jahwayne Smart and Cjay Hobbs guilty of killing Dante Sebastian Andreatta, CBC News reported. Andreatta was walking home with his mom on Nov. 7, 2020 when he was struck by a stray bullet during the shooting, which involved two vehicles in an apartment parking lot near Jane St. and Stong Court. The shooting started when two occupants of a stolen Honda Accord exited the vehicle and fired at another vehicle in the parking lot of 25 Stong Ct., according to an agreed upon statement of facts, which Crown prosecutors finished presenting to a jury when the trial opened in April 2025. MANDEL: Shooting survivor testifies 'all hell broke loose,' stray bullet killed innocent child WARMINGTON: Dante's organs saved 9 kids after his life was stolen Three people in the other vehicle were hurt, including one who was shot four times but survived. Two other occupants of the second vehicle were not struck by gunfire, the statement of facts said. They told jury members that they were there that afternoon to make a drug deal. Both approached the teens in the car to ask if one of them was the buyer. Chambers and Smart testified that they started shooting after they saw one of the teenagers pointing a gun out the window, CBC reported. The Crown had argued they were lying about the teens having a gun and there was no planned drug deal, saying the trio of men went to the area with a plan to shoot the teenagers inside the car. Thirty-six bullets were unleashed from two guns aimed at a fleeing car in the brazen daylight shooting. Four days later, on Remembrance Day at Sick Kids, the boy died of a single perforating gunshot wound to his neck. Chambers and Smart were carrying Glock 19 handguns when they were arrested.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is one of Canada's most powerful symbols of remembrance. And now the Canadian War Museum is adding a new level of poignancy with an exhibition beginning this month and running until May 2026. The commemorative panel exhibit will mark 25 years since the repatriation of the Unknown Soldier at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. 'Presented through 18 thoughtfully curated panels, this wall display highlights the history and legacy of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which has become a site of reflection, tribute and collective mourning,' the museum stated in a news release. 'It also explores the ongoing role of his tomb in national remembrance.' 'The Unknown Soldier's anonymity makes him a symbol of all Canadians who made the ultimate sacrifice in war. Forging a connection between past sacrifices and present-day service, his tomb offers a space for everyone to grieve, reflect and remember those lost in war.' 'Visitors are invited to reflect on sacrifice, loss and remembrance while deepening their understanding of how Canada honours those who served.' The commemoration will also underline the link between the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Memorial Hall at the Canadian War Museum, where the Unknown Soldier's original headstone is preserved and illuminated each Remembrance Day. The Canadian War Museum, which traces its origins to 1880, is the country's key repository of military history and one of the world's most respected galleries for the study and understanding of armed conflict. Since 2005, it has been located on the LeBreton Flats site in downtown Ottawa. Its collection includes more than three million artifacts, works of art, written documents and much more.

Strictly's Karen Hauer says she knew she was 'losing' Kevin Clifton before split

Strictly's Karen Hauer says she knew she was 'losing' Kevin Clifton before split Strictly Come Dancing professional Karen Hauer has opened up about her split from ex-husband Kevin Clifton, saying she knew she was 'losing' him before they separated Karen Hauer has opened up about her split from Kevin Clifton (Image: PA Archive/PA Images ) Strictly Come Dancing professional Karen Hauer has opened up about the moment she sensed she was "losing" her ex-husband Kevin Clifton during their marriage. Karen, 43, first met fellow dancer Kevin, 42, while they performed in Burn The Floor in New York back in 2011. They eventually tied the knot in 2015 after their relationship blossomed. ‌ The couple decided to relocate from the US to the UK in 2012 to pursue opportunities on Strictly Come Dancing. While Karen was recruited as a professional dancer on the show, Kevin initially took on a choreographer role. ‌ Speaking to We Need to Talk with Paul Brunson, Karen revealed that adapting to life on Strictly proved "tough" for the couple. Over time, they found themselves growing apart, but neither wanted to initiate a split. As a result, they "pretended" to be together for the sake of the show, reports Edinburgh Live. Karen joined Strictly Come Dancing in 2012 (Image: Getty Images ) Article continues below Karen recalled: "I felt that he distanced himself from me but I was probably doing the same because I felt if he didn't want me, I would retreat and give him his space. It was one of those that we're both not talking about it so I'm like, 'Do you want a divorce? Do you want to split up? I don't know what I want to do, what do you want to do? Do you know what I want?', 'I don't know what I want', 'Okay so are we broken up or?'" Karen revealed the struggles within her relationship, saying: "It took a while actually, it took about a year behind the scenes. In front of the scenes everything was normal." Karen says she became frustrated "waiting" for Kevin to decide whether they wanted to remain together. It is then she says she "met someone" else. ‌ Although separated from Kevin at that time, Karen shared how she felt unfairly depicted as having cheated on him, which led to Kevin requesting a divorce. Explaining her mindset during that period, she added: "In my mind, it's almost like something had to happen in order for him to make a decision because I wasn't going to make a decision and pull the plug. Then I tripped and the grenade went off, I pulled the pin." Karen Hauer and ex Kevin Clifton (Image: Getty Images ) ‌ Shortly before the split, Karen says there was a poignant moment on Strictly that made her realise she was "losing" Kevin. She explained: "There was one number that we did, and it was right before we broke up. It was for Remembrance Day and he was playing a soldier and I was taking the jacket off the table and dancing with it. She continued, describing how the dance mirrored her personal life with Kevin: "Throughout the dance he comes back and dances with me and goes in and out of my life until I finish dancing with the jacket and placing it back on the table, it was literally I'd lost him and it was the end." Karen reflected on the emotional performance, saying: "I remember when we finished that, we looked at each other, and we record this in front of an audience as well, so they only give you one or two takes, so you have to get it right, that sentiment. And the sentiment wasn't hard to get into that story because I was experiencing it, because I was losing him." Article continues below The following year, Kevin was paired with Stacey Dooley on Strictly, and their partnership blossomed into romance, confirmed in January 2019. The couple now have a daughter, Minnie, together. Karen, on the other hand, remarried in 2022, exchanging vows with Jordan Wyn-Jones, but the couple parted ways in 2024.
