Habib Mithiborwala: 20 years later, I am still fighting, but I haven't given up
As Mumbai marks 20 years since the devastating 2005 floods, actor Habib Mithiborwala shares his inspiring story of how even after being declared dead in the hospital, he didn't give up. Known for his role in the popular show Remix (2006) Habib recalls the horrific day, as he tells us, 'As I wasn't shooting that day, I had gone out to collect my TDS certificate. The AC gas somehow got leaked into the car and I fainted. When I regained consciousness the next morning, I realised my body was stuck in that seated position, knees folded, and blood circulation had completely stopped. I couldn't feel my legs at all.' Mumbai Floods | Habib Mithiborwala : I am still fighting, but I haven't given up He further adds, 'I couldn't open the car door even, but managed to push it open through my body weight and somehow crawled out. Some people saw me and said, 'ye toh mar gaya hai', and they took my valuables (gold chain, watch, etc). I was barely conscious. The same people took me to a Nursing Home.' The 44-year-old actor mentions how he was declared dead at the nursing home. "There was no electricity. Machines weren't working, and my body temperature had dropped quite low. I could hear everything around me but couldn't move - I was paralyzed. I was blue by then, not just the skin, but my whole body had turned blue. I even heard a nurse say, 'post-mortem kara do iska'. That hit me hard. I heard the word 'police' and 'post-mortem', and in my head, I kept thinking: I'm still alive,' recalls Habib, adding, "It was when the doctors arrived, they made one last attempt as they injected me in my abdomen, and suddenly I started vomiting water at least three to four litres water and oil. That saved me.' He was then moved to Nanavati Hospital where the prognosis was grim. He mentions, 'They told my family I might develop gangrene. My elder brother, who's a dentist, got me moved to another hospital. That's where the real journey began. I was in the hospital for 3.5 months. I couldn't eat solid food for that entire period. I've had more than 60 operations since then.' The damage was permanent he was told, but Habib refused to let it define him. 'Today, I have only 40% muscle in my limbs. But I still walk, dance, go horse riding, drive-- I've done it all.' Over the years, his body has endured immense medical intervention. 'From 2005 till now, I've received 80 bottles of blood — 10 red, 70 white. Doctors called me the 'medical boy'. They still don't understand how I'm able to walk.' Life, as he knew it, changed forever. 'I lost everything, my girlfriend back then, she left me when the doctors said I'd never walk again. I couldn't act as the focus was only recovery. I still don't have movement in two parts of my legs. It's like walking on a rope, constantly balancing. Even now, I do gym, swimming — just to stay fit. Because I have to carry 67 kilos of weight on just 30–40% muscle. Imagine what that feels like.' Things went downhill for him professionally as he lost work. 'People forget you quickly. I remember going to a producer's office where I was told, 'you're not hero material anymore'. I had shared my experience with a production house. I really want people to see me for the talent I have and not for what I went through. I am a fighter. I've auditioned for Fear Factor, Bigg Boss, a lot of reality shows. I really want to do one, because my story is still unheard. People don't know the fight I've put in. I just want a medium where I can say — I'm still here," he says.

Auckland media boss confirmed as mystery buyer of $11.2m vacant waterfront Westmere section
And while the global media industry is struggling with falling advertising revenue and widespread layoffs, the Remix owner last month splashed out on a vacant West End Rd section on the shoreline of Coxs Bay. The 1000sq m site is just a few doors down from the $26m mansion owned by rich-listers Anna Mowbray and Ali Williams. Architect David Ponting's design for the home that is being built on the 1000sqm block of land on West End Rd, in Auckland's Westmere. Its $11.2m price tag includes plans for a luxury five-bedroom, three-bathroom home designed by architect David Ponting, complete with its own boat ramp. The vendor was Auckland property developer Jason Ellingham, who also owns the neighbouring $5m home where a worker was crushed to death during construction in 2023. In an unusual deal, Ellingham has agreed to build Phin's new home as part of the purchase price. It's understood Ellingham had planned to build the house for himself but his plans changed. The vacant site had been on the market for about a year until the contract was inked with Phin. The Herald sought comment from Phin about the timeline for the build, what attracted him to the site, and how a media company owner could afford his lavish property portfolio. He declined to comment. Media man and DJ Tim Phin (left) has posted selfies on his Instagram page posing with supermodels, including Miranda Kerr. Photo / Tim Phin However, a Society Insider source told the Herald Phin's long-time partner, digital designer Carl Thompson, was believed to have made millions selling a business several years ago and the pair had been living 'hugely extravagantly'. 'With the magazine, everything is sponsored – airfares, hotels, and [Phin] leverages it like that.' As well as being the founder of Remix Magazine, Tim Phin is a DJ. Photo / Tim Phin The property was sold by Bayleys agent Cristina Casares. She told OneRoof that Ellingham was a long-time admirer of Ponting's work and had enlisted the architect to create a private residence with strong architectural form, worthy of the extraordinary setting. An artist's impression of the five-bedroom home that's planned on the waterfront Westmere site. The five bedrooms were on the top floor, with the ground floor reserved for the living spaces, which flowed out to the pool, spa and sweeping, flat lawns. Ponting told OneRoof the inspiration always came back to nature and the home was a homage to the harbour. 'It would have been insane to do anything other than engage with that and do so in such a way that you feel could reach out and touch the water and feel completely immersed in that context.' Works commence on $11.2m vacant site Works on the site have recently commenced, with contractors rebuilding a rock seawall around the property. A resource consent has been issued for the work and rebuild of the existing boat ramp, which sits on land unlawfully reclaimed more than 100 years ago. Works have commenced on the site to rebuild a rock seawall and existing boat ramp. The consent decision says ordering the site to be returned to its original form would cause more harm than good due to sediment runoff caused by removing such a large amount of soil and fill. Part of the site will be designated public reserve, with the owner required to safeguard public access, the decision says. Auckland Council says a resource consent for the new dwelling was granted in 2022 and the Herald understands construction is due to start shortly. Google introduces cool new AI powered features for the Photos app and YouTube Shorts
Announced in a new blog post, Google is adding some new features to Google Photos and YouTube Shorts. Let's start with Google Photos, which will use AI to turn photographs in the Photos app into six-second video clips. This will allow you to turn your still photos into videos. Starting today, the feature, powered by Google's Veo 2 advanced AI video generation model, will create short, fun videos from static images. You'll choose a photo from your photo gallery in Google Photos and pick one of two options available: "Subtle movements" or "I'm feeling lucky." Once the video is created, you can share it with friends, family, and even your boss. Photo to video in Google Photos should be available on your Android or iOS handsets starting today. Turn your photo into anime, comics, or 3D animation. | Image credit-Google Did you notice the temperature drop? That's because Google has more cool features to announce. Remix in Google Photos will be available in the U.S. for both Android and iOS devices and will be available over the next few weeks. This feature allows you to step inside your Google Photos gallery to, once again, choose a photo. This time, you'll be taking that photo and transform it using one of four different styles such as anime, comics, sketches, or 3D animations. Want to know what your pug looks like as a character in a comic book? Now you can find out. The new Google Create tab will show you all of the features available to you in Google Photos in one spot. The Create tab is where you will go to find and use Photo to video, and Remix. The tab will also show you how to create collages, highlight videos, and other cool looks from your photo gallery. The tab, which acts like a hub, will be updated as Google obtains feedback from users. Google will disseminate the new Create tab in the U.S. starting next month. Now you can turn your photos into videos on Android and iOS. | Image credit-Google The aforementioned new AI features for the Google Photos app will include added transparency. Just like images edited using Reimagine in Photos, all videos and photos created using Photo to video and Remix will have an invisible digital watermark from SynthID. Similar to videos created by Gemini, videos created in Photos will have a visual watermark. -Google As Google says, "Your photo library in Google Photos is more than an archive, it's a canvas. We're excited to see how you use these tools to bring your memories to life in new ways." Some of the new tools are coming over to YouTube Shorts, including the ability to transform pictures from your camera roll into videos. Select an image, choose a "creative suggestion," and Photo to video can, according to Google, "add movement to landscape photos, animate pictures of everyday photos, or bring group photos to life." This feature is rolling out now and next week at no cost in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The feature will be available in more regions later this year. Some of these new features are available today for both Android and iOS. | Image credit-Google The new effects available for use with YouTube Shorts can turn your doodles into fun images and turn a selfie into an underwater photograph, or create a pose with a lookalike twin, and more. To create these, go to the Effects icon in the Shorts camera and select AI to choose from the new generative effects. These are powered by Veo 2, and later this summer, Veo 3 will be coming to YouTube Shorts. Google is also introducing AI Playground, which includes generative AI creation tools. There are examples designed to give you the incentive to create. You can create content quickly thanks to pre-filed prompts that help you create images, videos, music, and more in the blink of an eye. SynthID watermarks and clear labels are used to indicate that these creations were generated with AI. To access the AI Playground, tap the create button followed by the sparkle icon in the top-right corner. The feature is available now, as Google says, "for everyone" in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
