Netflix is dropping support for older Amazon Fire TV Stick: See if you are affected

Netflix has announced that it will remove support for the first-generation Amazon Fire TV sticks next week. While the company did not explain why it is doing so, these older Fire TV devices may likely be unable to stream shows in high quality. According to ZDNet, Netflix has sent an email to affected users notifying them of the change and saying that the cutoff date for US users is June 3. In a statement to The Verge, Amazon spokesperson Jen Lurey Ridings said that 'Netflix will be discontinuing support for some first-generation Fire TV devices, which were introduced more than 10 years ago. Netflix remains available on all other Fire TV devices.' Netflix spokesperson also clarified only first generation models of the Fire TV, Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick with Voice Remote will be affected and that these device users 'may be eligible for a discount on a newer Fire TV Stick', at least in the US. If you haven't received the email and want to see if your Fire TV device is getting the axe, head over the the 'About' section in Settings> My Fire TV. For those wondering, the first-generation Fire TV devices were launched back in 2014, which is more than a decade ago. Powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 600 chipset, these devices run on Fire OS 8 and come with 2GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. On its FAQ page, Netflix says that it ends support for some devices if it 'can no longer get necessary updates from its manufacturer or support new features'. If you are getting an error code R4, R12, or R25-1, it means that your device is no longer supported by Netflix or will be discontinued after a certain date. This isn't the first time Netflix has ended support for older devices. The company has made similar moves in the last few years, dropping support for old DVD players, Blu-ray players, video game consoles, TVs and even tablets.

Beware of fake YouTube channel deceiving users into installing malicious scripts: Police and CSA, Singapore News

Members of the public are advised to be wary of a fake YouTube channel impersonating a trading platform, with videos aimed at deceiving users into executing malicious scripts that compromise cryptocurrency wallets. This was shared by the Singapore Police Force and the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) in a joint media statement on Friday (May 2). According to the statement, the fake YouTube channel, which bears the name and logo of trading platform TradingView, provided instructions for users to install a purportedly official application. TradingView is a legitimate online platform used to chart and analyse financial markets, including stocks, forex and cryptocurrencies. It is downloadable as a desktop and mobile application via its official website. The statement added that victims of the scam channel were directed to download and execute Windows PowerShell scripts containing a malicious PowerShell command. Upon running the command, a Remote Access Trojan (RAT) was installed onto the victims' devices, compromising their cryptocurrency wallets. It is not clear from the statement how many users had fallen prey to the ruse. According to screenshots provided by the police, the fake TradingView channel which was discovered contained slight irregularities to its name and URL. The channel has since been blocked on YouTube. Precautionary measures The authorities reminded members of the public to avoid running unknown commands, clicking on unsolicited links or downloading attachments from unfamiliar sources. They are also advised to use secure wallets to store cryptocurrencies offline, use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication, the media statement noted. It added that members of the public should regularly check their wallets for unauthorised transactions and stay updated on the latest security threats. Those who suspect that they have fallen victim to cryptocurrency-related crimes should halt further transactions or freeze their accounts and report these incidents to the police, said the statement. Diver recovering after being bitten by great white shark

A great white shark was labelled curious, after it was spotted in a video investigating a bait pot put out to capture video footage of species in the Dusky Sound. Photo: supplied/DOC A diver is recovering well after being bitten by a shark at Dusky Sound in Fiordland National Park. The man had been diving from a charter boat, and was flown by helicopter to Southland Hospital in Invercargill in a moderate condition, about 5:30pm on Thursday. A Pure Salt Charters spokesperson said it was presumed a great white shark was responsible for the attack, although they were rarely in the area. The diver was bitten on the calf, and he and a dive buddy saw the shark clearly after the bite, and described it as a great white, Pure Salt Charters' Maria Kuster told the NZ Herald: "It was one bite and let go." Last month, DOC said footage from underwater video sites set up in Fiordland's Tamatea/Dusky Sound to monitor species diversity and numbers had captured many shark species, and the team had been surprised to see a great white among them. "While reviewing the videos, I saw a mature male white pointer shark (great white sharks are also called white pointer sharks) turn up to the BRUV [Baited Remote Underwater Video] - it was quite a shock! "We had been laughing about how cool it would be to see something like that. It's very rare to get such great footage," Sea Through Science researcher Adam Smith said. DOC said that in the footage, the shark appeared curious, headed straight to the video unit, mouthed the bait pot a couple of times then slowly swam away. "It's great to see these majestic creatures in their natural environment and to see how curious they are around the BRUVs," Smith said. "We've only seen a white shark once before during our surveys, at the Kermadec Islands, the other end of New Zealand." The region was also known to be home to inshore broadnose sevengill sharks, the DOC Facebook page said.
