Hong Kong construction leader given community service for drink driving
A Hong Kong construction industry leader has been sentenced to 240 hours of community service and fined HK$1,500 (US$192) for crashing his car into a traffic sign while driving under the influence of alcohol earlier this year. Advertisement Eastern Court on Friday also disqualified Colman Wong Chiu-ching from driving for two years after he pleaded guilty to two charges arising from a traffic accident on southern Hong Kong Island. Wong is the general manager at the Hong Kong office of Leighton Contractors (Asia), and is one of six vice-presidents of Hong Kong Construction Association, which represents more than 300 companies in the sector. The 52-year-old was driving along the westbound lane of Repulse Bay Road when he lost control of his private car and hit a road sign at around 1.40am on May 31, according to a prosecution summary of the case. He returned to his home at The Repulse Bay residential complex and asked a security officer to call the police. He failed two subsequent breathalyser tests. Advertisement Wong pleaded guilty last month to careless driving and driving a motor vehicle with an alcohol concentration in breath above the prescribed limit.

The dream flat in Hong Kong's Repulse Bay that was a fortuitous find
Hong Kong lawyer Kapil Kirpalani had almost given up on trying to buy the perfect apartment when he had his very own Christmas miracle. Advertisement It was December 24, 2020. He'd just missed the bus home to Mid-Levels after a dinner in Stanley and, while waiting for the next one, the bachelor's eyes were drawn to a real estate shopfront. And there it was: a Repulse Bay beauty with curved windows framing knockout views of the sea in front, and mountains behind. Dining area. Photo: Eugene Chan 'It looked too good to be true,' says Kirpalani, who jumped in a taxi and asked the driver to take him to that address. From outside, 'it was absolutely stunning'. After persuading the agent to meet for an inspection the following morning – Christmas Day – the good vibes kept on coming. By the new year, he was the proud new owner of the 848 sq ft flat. The 30-year-old building had benefited from recent facade, facilities and amenities upgrades, but the apartment's interior looked dated. Together with Vincent Leung Tsz-chun, Win Key Workshop's designer and project manager, Kirpalani was a hands-on renovator. Dining area detail. Photo: Eugene Chan 'Vincent had ideas for making better use of the space,' he says, 'while I was very particular about the look and feel.'

In pictures: summer fun on the beach of Hong Kong's Repulse Bay
The sandy shore of Hong Kong's scenic Repulse Bay has been attracting beachgoers for decades, and the Post's photographers have been there to capture the summer scenes. Nutrition meets wellness at Gróa in Hong Kong, ‘more than just a restaurant,' owner says
It is my third time interviewing Cheman Cheung in the past four years and each time, the entrepreneur has something new going on. Advertisement Cheung founded the wellness brand Nüte in 2021, selling smoothie bars online. He has since added two sister brands under Nüte: Benko, a Japanese-inspired bento (boxed meal) shop at Basehall, the upscale food court in Hong Kong's Central district; and more recently, Gróa, a casual seaside restaurant that opened in April in the south of Hong Kong Island. Gróa in Repulse Bay serves plates inspired by Mediterranean and Japanese cuisine. The name, which means 'to grow' in Old Norse, sums up the restaurant's ethos. 'We want people's well-being to grow here,' Cheung says. 'It's much more than just a restaurant for us. We want people to come in and leave with a lovely memory, feeling recharged, rejuvenated and [with] a sense of growth from the conversations, food, service and environment.' On the way to Gróa in Repulse Bay Arcade, visitors pass under several Chinese moon gates along a quiet walkway. Photo: Gróa Tucked away on the top floor of Repulse Bay Arcade, the restaurant is not easy to find. Once you arrive, however, it feels as though you found a secret corner of Hong Kong's Southern district. Advertisement Chinese garden archways straddle the path leading to the restaurant, and traditional Chinese windows and bamboo stalks frame a picturesque sea view. Inside, the restaurant is a mix of natural wood and green tones. Gróa feels like the physical manifestation of Cheung's values and Nüte's North Star.
