Raad meets Aoun, says state must perform 'duties' before discussing arms

by Naharnet Newsdesk 27 May 2025, 12:35 A delegation from Hezbollah's parliamentary bloc held meetings Monday with President Joseph Aoun and Speaker Nabih Berri. 'We exchanged viewpoints in general about the priorities and challenges facing our country, topped by preserving national sovereignty, ending Israeli occupation, and halting the hostility and violations that are unfortunately sponsored and backed by some countries that are sponsors of the ceasefire agreement,' Raad said after the meeting with Aoun. He added that the talks also tackled 'rebuilding what was destroyed by the (Israeli) aggression, preserving stability and activating state institutions through electoral junctures, such as the latest municipal and mayoral elections.' 'The space of understanding between us and the president is broad and can be counted on, and we do not find ourselves bound by a timing, places, tools or methods to fill this space, as long as things in Lebanon are moving forward with care and keenness from the president on achieving the priorities that I first mentioned,' Raad said. Hitting out at Prime Minister Nawaf Salam for recently omitting the word 'Resistance' from the official name of the 'Resistance and Liberation Day' holiday in one of his statements, Raad said: 'We insist that this holiday is the Resistance and Liberation Day and not only Liberation Day, because the liberation was achieved by the resistance.' Asked whether the visit had 'opened the door for bilateral dialogue between the president and Hezbollah over monopolizing arms in the hands of the state,' Raad responded: 'There are no closed doors in the way of exchanging discussions and ideas with the president on any level … The doors have been open since the presidential election and will remain open to everything that can achieve sovereignty and preserve stability and the rights of all individuals and essential components of this country.' As for the issue of arms, the Hezbollah lawmaker said: 'The state can have no privileges without committing to its duties. When the two become equal -- duties and commitments -- an agreement would take place.' Asked about Salam's remarks that 'the era of exporting the Iranian revolution has ended' and that the state 'will not remain silent over any arms outside the state's control,' Raad said: 'I don't want to comment on this statement in order to preserve what's left of cordiality.'

SM: Resistance Day station to start real changes in conflict with enemy

Sana'a - Saba: The Southern Movement's component (SM), which participated in the National Dialogue Conference that signed the Peace and Partnership Agreement, considered Resistance and Liberation Day, May 25, a historic milestone from which real transformations in the conflict with the Israeli enemy began. The General Secretariat of SM's component indicated in a statement received by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), that the Israeli enemy had a false belief that it was invincible until the Lebanese proved that the option of resistance and the land we sacrifice with our lives and blood are impervious to the occupation, no matter how tyrannical and oppressive it is. The statement congratulated the Leader of the Revolution, Sayyed Abdulmalik Badr al-Din al-Houthi, the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Sayyed Naim Qassem, the brotherly Lebanese people, and the leaders and peoples of the Resistance Axis on the 25th anniversary of Resistance and Liberation Day. It noted that Resistance and Liberation Day is the radiance that spread the light of victory from 2000 to 2006, and then to 2021 with the victory in Gaza. This day will continue, God willing and by His promise, until the demise of the nation's enemies—the aggressive, occupying, and usurping Zionist entity, its American enemy partners, and those who orbit around them. The statement saluted the makers of the Yemeni people's historic, honorable stances in supporting and backing Gaza on a day when supporters were weak, those closest to them failed, and conspirators conspired. It condemned the escalation and crimes of genocide committed by the nation's Zionist and American enemies against defenseless civilians in the Gaza Strip, and praised the qualitative and strategic military operations of the Yemeni Armed Forces deep inside the occupied Palestinian territories in support of Gaza and its free people. Hezbollah's Qassem vows to act if Lebanon fails to confront Israeli threats

Shafaq News/ On Sunday, Hezbollah Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem reaffirmed that armed resistance remains Lebanon's only viable response to Israeli aggression. Speaking on the occasion of Resistance and Liberation Day, Qassem said Hezbollah emerged in direct response to Israel's occupation of Palestine and repeated assaults on Lebanon and the region. He emphasized that the movement was born out of necessity, especially as the Lebanese army lacked the capability to counter Israeli aggression amid international backing for Israel. 'Even after Israel withdrew from most Lebanese territory in 1985, it retained until the year 2000 a 1,100-square-kilometer strip in the south—amounting to 55% of southern Lebanon and 11% of the country's total area,' Qassem pointed out. Regarding the ceasefire agreement, Hezbollah's SG noted that the group has abided by the indirect ceasefire agreement with Israel, even as Israeli forces committed over 3,300 violations, urging the Lebanese government to adopt stronger diplomatic stances at both domestic and international levels. 'Failure to confront the aggression could push Hezbollah to consider alternative courses of action. We give the state time to act, but we are prepared for all scenarios,' Qassem affirmed. He accused the US of 'interfering in Lebanese sovereignty and pressuring national leaders to accept Israeli conditions,' placing full responsibility for the ongoing violence on Washington for enabling Israeli attacks in Lebanon, Gaza, and beyond. He asserted that Lebanon faces a binary choice: 'victory or martyrdom,' and rejected any form of submission or threat. In a pointed message to US President Donald Trump, Qassem urged him to 'seize the opportunity of a lifetime' to break free from Israeli influence, warning that continued American backing for Israel undermines regional stability. 'Either Lebanon as a whole enjoys stability, or none of it does,' Hezbollah's leader added, emphasizing the need for unified national action. Qassem concluded by calling on the Lebanese government to accelerate post-war reconstruction efforts. He advocated for launching a national reconstruction fund, highlighting expressions of support from countries such as Iraq and Iran, which he said are ready to assist once Lebanon takes the initiative.

Hezbollah's Secretary-General: Yemen set example of resilience against American-Israeli aggression

Beirut – Saba: Hezbollah's Secretary-General, Sheikh Naim Qassem, affirmed that the ongoing Israeli aggression does not weaken the resistance but rather strengthens its resolve and determination. He emphasized the party's adherence to the triad of the army, the people, and the resistance as the foundation for shaping the future and achieving liberation. In a speech marking the 25th anniversary of Resistance and Liberation Day, Sheikh Qassem praised the resilience demonstrated by Yemen in the face of American-Israeli aggression. He also highlighted the steadfastness of the people of Gaza, who have confronted genocide and destruction backed by the United States. He stated that the resistance emerged out of necessity in confronting the enemy, stressing that Lebanon cannot remain passive against such threats. The resistance, he said, is the natural solution when the army is unable to act and serves as its support when it is capable. Sheikh Qassem explained that the resistance has transformed Lebanon from weakness to strength, proving to be the only viable path to liberation. He noted that Israel's ability to expand its influence in Lebanon has ended. He described Resistance and Liberation Day as the cornerstone that paved the way for subsequent achievements, recounting heroic stories from members of the resistance community. Sheikh Qassem pointed out that the Israeli occupation of Palestine and repeated aggressions against Lebanon and regional countries were the direct causes of the resistance's emergence in Lebanon. He reviewed the stages of the resistance since the 1970s, highlighting Hezbollah's formation in the 1980s and its pivotal role in the resistance movement. The Hezbollah leader underscored that the Israeli occupation failed to establish a lasting presence in Lebanon. He recalled that the political rivalry in Israel ahead of the 2000 elections between Ehud Barak and Benjamin Netanyahu revolved around the withdrawal from southern Lebanon. Sheikh Qassem described this victory as a monumental achievement for the resistance and the Lebanese people, emphasizing that Israel's withdrawal was unconditional and without any agreement. He dismissed Israeli predictions that the withdrawal would trigger internal strife or sectarian discord. He affirmed that this historic achievement altered the region's political, cultural, and jihadist trajectory, transforming Lebanon from despair to hope, submission to resistance, humiliation to dignity, and defeat to victory. Sheikh Qassem reiterated that the resistance continues today as it did in the past, representing the choice of the people and believers. He emphasized that resistance is a steadfast option, embodied by the will of the people, and cannot be defeated—remaining resilient through sacrifice, dignity, martyrs, prisoners, the unwavering faith of families and children eager to defend their homeland. He stressed that the resistance is inherently defensive, symbolizing a rejection of occupation and refusal to surrender. Addressing the current situation, Sheikh Qassem noted that the Lebanese state had indirectly agreed to a ceasefire with Israel and adhered to it, as did Hezbollah—despite over 3,300 Israeli violations, which constitute ongoing aggression. He demanded that Israel withdraw, cease hostilities, release prisoners, and end all obligations under the agreement before any new negotiations could begin. Sheikh Qassem held the United States responsible for the continuation of aggression, warning that the state's failure to counter it might force the resistance to consider other options. He cautioned against persistent U.S. pressure on Lebanese officials to meet Israeli demands, asserting that Lebanon faces only two choices: victory or martyrdom, with no room for surrender. The Hezbollah leader emphasized that reconstruction is the cornerstone of Lebanon's stability, urging the government to expedite the launch of a reconstruction fund. Sheikh Qassem affirmed that Hezbollah is integral to all positive developments in Lebanon, including presidential elections, government formation, municipal elections, and appointments. He called for thwarting any attempts at obstruction, stressing that a strong and stable Lebanon serves the interests of all its people and regional and international allies, and that no one can blackmail Lebanon over its national decisions. He urged boldness and trust in Lebanon, its people, army, and resistance, asserting that no one can defeat them and that anticipated achievements will be realized. Sheikh Qassem concluded by affirming that Hezbollah and the Amal Movement serve as a social safeguard and a pillar of national balance, with an unwavering commitment to prioritizing this role.
