Extortion: 9 Tihar Officials Placed Under Suspension
New Delhi: A day after facing criticism from the Delhi High Court , Delhi govt on Wednesday informed the court that it has suspended nine Tihar Jail officials for allegedly running an extortion racket in collusion with inmates. The govt assured a bench of chief justice D K Upadhyaya and justice Tushar Rao Gedela that strict disciplinary action was initiated against the officials, who were placed under suspension and transferred as per rules. It also sought an additional two months to file its action taken report in the case. Earlier, the high court had directed the CBI to register an FIR after finding merit in allegations of an extortion ring operating from Tihar Jail, facilitated by inmates' access to mobile phones. On that date, both the CBI and Delhi govt will present their reports. The court also asked the govt to issue an advisory to all jails in Delhi — including Tihar, Mandoli, and Rohini — to prevent such incidents. The HC ordered the CBI to conduct a preliminary inquiry. The report included call data records between persons outside and inside the jail, and misuse of the jail's official landline to "promote nefarious activities." The judge's report, submitted in a sealed cover, revealed "very disturbing facts" pointing to criminal activities and irregularities in Tihar Jail's functioning. Earlier this week, the CBI submitted sealed findings indicating inmate and jail official involvement in illegal and corrupt activities, prompting the HC to order an FIR. The court described the findings as "astonishing", requiring prompt and serious govt action. The HC reiterated its May 2 order for Delhi Home Department's principal secretary to conduct a fact-finding inquiry to identify officials responsible for administrative lapses. 'Toughest days of my life': Hemant Soren pens emotional note after father Shibu Soren's death; recalls why he was called 'Dishom Guru'
(Photo credit: PTI) NEW DELHI: Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren on Tuesday penned a heartfelt tribute to his father and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder Shibu Soren, following his death at the age of 81, calling it the "most toughest time of his life. " Shibu Soren, popularly known as 'Dishom Guru', was a towering figure in Indian tribal politics and played a key role in the movement for Jharkhand's statehood. He passed away on Monday at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi after a prolonged illness. Sharing a post on X, Soren described the immense personal and public loss, stating that beyond losing a father, Jharkhand has lost a crucial leader. "I am going through the toughest days of my life. Not only has the shadow of a father been taken from me, but a pillar of Jharkhand's soul has departed," Hemant Soren posted on X. "I didn't just call him 'Baba,' He was my guide, the root of my thoughts, and that forest-like shade that protected thousands and lakhs of Jharkhandis from the scorching sun and injustice," he continued. He would smile and say: 'Because, son, I only understood their pain and made their fight my own.'" "That title was not written in any book, nor was it given by Parliament. It came from the hearts of Jharkhand's people," Soren added. He also explained the meaning behind the name: "'Dishom' means society, 'Guru' means the one who shows the way." He also praised his father's fearless commitment to justice, saying that he was not afraid of "taking on the mightiest of the mighty." "I was scared, but Baba was never afraid. He would say: 'If standing against injustice is a crime, then I will be guilty again and again.' No book can explain Baba's struggle. It was in his sweat, in his voice, and in the cracked heels covered by his sandals," Hemant said. He recalled his father's humility even after Jharkhand achieved statehood. "When Jharkhand became a state, His dream came true, but he never considered power an achievement. He said: "This state is not a throne for me, It is the identity of my people." Hemant ended his note by acknowledging his father's fighting spirit, stating that his presence would continue in every aspect of Jharkhand's existence. "The dream you saw is now my promise. I will not let Jharkhand bow down; I will not let your name fade away. Your struggle will not remain incomplete. Baba, now you rest. You have fulfilled your duty. Now we must walk in your footsteps. Jharkhand will remain indebted to you. I, your son, will keep your promise," the CM noted. Shibu Soren leaves behind a legacy of struggle, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to the cause of tribal empowerment in India. Reservoir levels stable, no flood-like situation: Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal
Chandigarh: Punjab water resources minister Barinder Kumar Goyal informed the vidhan sabha on Monday that water reservoir levels in Punjab were stable and there was currently no flood-like situation in the state. Responding to a calling attention notice moved by Sultanpur Lodhi MLA Rana Inder Pratap Singh regarding preventing flood threats in low-lying areas due to rising water levels in reservoirs, Goyal said that the state govt had implemented comprehensive arrangements to address every potential scenario. Goyal said that water levels in major reservoirs remained within safe limits as of July 10. He said that the current level at Bhakra Dam stood at 1,590.48 feet compared to 1,614.89 feet on July 10, 2023, during the floods that year. "Similarly, the current level at Pong Dam is 1,325.48 feet, which was 1,350.63 feet on July 10, 2023, during the 2023 floods. The current level at Ranjit Sagar Dam is 505.41 metres compared to 520.2 metres on July 10, 2023, during the 2023 floods," said Goyal, adding that "all three reservoirs are operating safely with ample buffer from danger levels". Rana Inder Pratap Singh, the son of Congress MLA from Kapurthala Rana Gurjeet Singh and elected as an independent MLA from Sultanpur Lodhi in the 2022 Punjab assembly elections, also claimed that there were "ongoing illegal mining activities within the embankment zones, particularly in areas where temporary structures have been erected by locals". He further said that the residents of his constituency were willing to voluntarily offer land for the construction of embankments if it helps safeguard their lives and livelihoods from future floods. Responding to this, minister Goyal, while citing the example of Gidderpindi village, said de-silting was done on govt land but private landowners were not allowing that. "People made verbal promises but don't give their lands when it actually came to constructing embankments," he added. AAP MLA from Derabassi Kuljit Singh Randhawa said Zirakpur was worst hit when the water level rose during the rains. He said the farmers should be allowed to extract soil from Ghaggar to put the same in their lands. AAP MLA representing Ghanaur, Gurlal Ghanuar, also spoke on similar lines, pitching the "proper desilting of Ghaggar as the solution to avoid floods." Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh suggested that the govt should go in for sub-soil recharge by setting up "water pumping stations" as was "happening in countries like the US". "Have you made any such proposal," he sought to know.
