This NYC-Based Wine Shop From Michelin-Starred Vets Puts Roots Down in the Bay Area

A wine shop with Michelin-starred cred behind it is set to open in Menlo Park in late July: Somm Cellars is a wine retailer based in New York City that opened in 2020, and now, founders and sommeliers Jason Jacobeit and Daniel Jung are bringing their popular shop to the Bay Area. But it's not just a copy-paste version of the original; the duo expands their concept further and will fuse their wine shop with a daytime food menu and specialty market, along with an adjoining restaurant dubbed Cafe Vivant. It's an expression of the hospitality the duo always wanted to bring to their original shop, but haven't been able to due to limitations of the liquor license laws in New York. 'We still say to each other on a weekly basis, we're sommeliers that are playing at retail,' Jacobeit says. 'That's at least partially tongue-in-cheek, but we're restaurant people, and so the hybrid license opportunity [in California] was a no-brainer for us because it allowed us to put our first restaurant location on the map, to have this retail business... [that] synergizes closely with the restaurant.' Jacobeit was formerly the wine director of Michelin-starred (but now closed) Bâtard, noted for his knowledge of Burgundy wines and the extensive selection he built at the restaurant over his 10 years there. Jung was the head sommelier at Tribeca Grill (also closed) for six years, earning attention for the restaurant's Rhone collection and Burgundy program. For the California restaurant and accompanying daytime menu in the retail section, they've recruited chef Jared Wentworth, previously of Chicago's Longman & Eagle and Dusek's Board & Beer, both of which held a Michelin star for a number of years, and the Dining Room at Moody Tongue, which also earned a Michelin star during Wentworth's time there. Under Wentworth, Cafe Vivant will highlight heritage-breed chickens on its menu. The team works with farmer Rob James in Pescadero to raise the birds that will be served at the restaurant, and sold at the Somm Cellars market. Jacobeit and Jung partnered with James and purchased a piece of the farm, per the San Francisco Chronicle . But on the bottle shop side, Wentworth will produce a daytime menu composed of bites and dishes that are meant to be wine-friendly, which is great for those hanging in for a glass or bottle, or produced quickly for those looking for a quick bite on their lunch hour. The duo teased a 'pretty baller' fried chicken sandwich using those aforementioned chickens, deviled eggs from those same birds, as well as rabbit pate, pork rillettes, chicken liver mousse, and a Dungeness crab roll. Although wine will be an obvious, hefty focus on the beverage side, there will also be a selection of bottled cocktails and beers on hand, as well as a pour-over coffee and high-end tea program, the team shares. While Jacobeit and Jung say they have a contingency of West Coast fans and followers of their New York shop, those wandering in will find a wine selection that echoes their wine backgrounds. They promise a wide, 'enviable' selection of Burgundy wines, including chardonnays and pinot noirs, but they'll also branch into its California counterparts and local examples of those wines. One other distinction will be the inclusion of older vintages. 'A lot of wine shops in the area have a great selection across regions, but no depth in vintages,' says Paul Jones, the general manager for the Menlo Park establishment. 'Because of our access to local sellers, we're going to be able to offer top domains from older vintages, and that's going to be a regular feature in both the retail and the restaurant, too.' Along with the plentiful wine offerings and the daytime food menu, a retail shop will highlight products from the farm as well as home goods like specialty and vintage glassware and flatware. For grocery offerings, they're moving away from olives and Marcona almonds, and toward farm products like fruit, vegetables, herbs, and flowers, along with poultry, lamb, and pork — 'a high-end farmers market sort of setup,' Jacobeit says. 'It allows us to really reach the community at a much deeper level, than just a restaurant,' Jacobeit says. 'That's not to say that we wouldn't have opened the bottle shop without the market, but certainly, for both Daniel and me, the market has totally transformed our sense of what is possible and the extent to which we can really become an important part not just of the restaurant scene, but the high-end grocery scene in Silicon Valley.' That's not to mention the wine event programming. Now that they have both the restaurant and retail space available to them, the ideal scenario is to have wine offerings that feel inclusive at various prices. As an example, they may invite a winemaker to do free tastings of a 2022 vintage with small bites where visitors can learn about the wine. Afterward, the night might expand into a four-course seated dinner in the restaurant, where perhaps an older bottle or some magnums from the winery will be shared with the meal. 'There's this very inclusive, very educational, easy to access component of that event, and then it transitions to something much more aspirational, more high-end,' Jacobeit says. The team will accent the space with tables and a comfortable couch, all fitting with their vision of a high-end hospitality environment rather than a 'normative' retail environment, they say. 'We didn't want the retail-meets-hospitality to be an abstract part of the concept,' Jacobeit says. 'We want even passersby who are peeking through the window to really see that there's a cozy living room, a community space feel to the design.' Somm Cellars (720 Santa Cruz Avenue, Menlo Park) debuts late July. Sign up for our newsletter.

Select intersections along First Ave. E. to receive ADA signal improvements

Apr. 19—Five signalized intersections along First Avenue East in Newton will get ADA signals with audible sound and pedestrian countdown heads installed, and a significant portion of the project will be paid for with a more than $102,000 Traffic Safety Improvement Program (TSIP) grant. Affected streets include intersections at East Eighth Street, East 12th Street, East 14th Street, East 19th Street and East 23rd Street on First Avenue East. According to city council agenda documents, those with specific disabilities may find it difficult to know when it is safe to cross the intersection without the ADA signals. The loud sounds and countdown signal improvements are commonly used to help people with disabilities to cross the street. Three bids were received by the city: the Des Moines-based Kline Electric for $149,506; the Newton-based Van Mannen Electric for $150,600; and the Grimes-based Iowa Signal for $171,404. The engineer's construction cost estimate was $173,572.50. Much of the costs will be covered by the grant. The TSIP grant — funded with Road Use Tax funds — covers exactly $102,420. Even though Kline Electric was the lowest responsive, responsible bidder, council member Stacy Simbro asked why the council couldn't choose the local bid from Van Mannen, which was only $1,094 higher than the low bid. Jody Rhone, the acting public works director, said the city does have a 5 percent local preference policy. "In our current policy, that excludes projects because when that was created we did not want to get into any issues violating public bidding laws," Rhone said. "So those were intentionally excluded. We've had some discussion with the city attorney, and we may be looking at revising that policy." However, because there is a DOT grant on this particular project and the project has already been bid, Rhone said changing that policy midstream would not be kosher. The city is following its policies and public bidding laws, but choosing another bidder would not work in this particular situation. Simbro said, "So because it is a DOT grant that has its own rules and keeps us from looking at it? OK. Thank you." The council approved the project in a 6-0 vote. The remaining funds not paid for by the grant will be paid using 2022 bond proceeds.

The 'Rhone Rangers' Ride Into Texas To Showcase Rhone Wine Varietals

Last week, the Rhone Rangers rode through Texas, putting on a roadshow from April 6-8, 2025, to highlight Rhone varietals being grown across the United States, with a special focus on growers in the host locale: Texas! Bringing a series of Rhone Rangers events to Texas is fitting as the number of producers in Texas making Rhone varietal wines has been steadily increasing—as has the number of Texas producers who are members of the Rhone Rangers (which now numbers upwards of 15). A selection of Rhone varietal wines featured for trade professionals during the Rhone Rangers "Texas tour" on Tues, Apr 8, 2025 in Austin, TX. In the lead-up to the roadshow, Jason Haas, former President of the Rhone Rangers, and leader of the renowned Tablas Creek Vineyard, told me that the Rhone Rangers were 'really excited' to bring their events out to Texas for the first time. He said they were hoping the festivities would create some positive experiences for people and bring some attention to the developing wine scene in Texas, including the production of high quality Rhone varietals. The Rhone Rangers is a voluntary, 501(c)(6) organization that brings together producers of Rhone varietal wines to 'educate the public on Rhone varietal wine grapes grown in America and to promote the production and enjoyment of these wines' (as per their mission statement) During one of the events, a Trade Seminar and Tasting in Austin, TX, on Tues, Apr 8, 2025, I was able to chat with current Rhone Ranger's President, Larry Schaffer (proprietor for Tercero Wines), who told me: 'Rhone varietal wines are accessible and unpretentious' and that their goal as an organization is 'to welcome people into the wine world and welcome people to try these wines, these grapes, that they have maybe never heard of.' He noted that once people taste quality Rhone wines made in the US, 'their eyes are opened, and their minds are opened, and they're able to really appreciate these maybe lesser-known varietals while getting introduced to the producers making them.' President Larry Schaffer said it was 'a real pleasure to be out in Texas, seeing the landscape and seeing how the industry has developed over the past 10-15 years.' He said he appreciated getting to experience Texas hospitality first-hand and taste the quality wines being made in the state. He said he was proud to throw the cachet of the Rhone Rangers organization behind Texas wines and see how the growth in Rhone varietal production has played a role in the continuing development of quality wine in Texas. Chris Brundrett, co-founder and CEO of William Chris Wine Company, hosted another event in the series, the Rhone Ranger's Hill Country Tasting on Sun, Apr 6, 2025. He said: 'The event was epic! We had some of the best Texas Rhone wines poured next to some of the most iconic West Coast wines, and the energy in the room was electric. The Rhone Rangers event was another example of how a group of Texas producers have earned a seat at the table with the finest wine producers in the world.' Like Larry Schaffer, he also noted that it was 'a real pleasure' to be involved and to be able to help make the Rhone Ranger tour of Texas happen. Scene from the "trade tasting" hosted by the Rhone Rangers on Tues, Apr 8. 2025 in Austin, TX. The series of Rhone Ranger events in early April garnered positive reviews from everyone I heard from, and the success of the organization's visit seems to be a testament to the Texas industry and its various players. Bryan Chagoly, proprietor of Sandy Road Vineyards, champion for quality Texas wine, and participant in the Rhone Rangers series, told me at the Austin event that, in his estimation: 'Terroir is made by the people.' And the Rhone Rangers events held last week offered the opportunity to see terroir in action, to taste how the place of production makes a difference. These kinds of events are exciting because they offer opportunities for focused varietal comparisons as well as for fostering engaging, educational interactions among participants. In these kinds of sessions, trade professionals and consumers alike can do varietal tastings from different producers and directly experience how place comes through the product. For example, one white Rhone varietal being grown in Texas is Picpoul Blanc, which I had, by chance, just featured in a didactic tasting of my own days prior to the Rhone Rangers events. In my tasting, I was comparing a Hill Country AVA expression of Picpoul from Seventh Son Vineyards to a High Plains AVA expression from Michael Ros Winery. The two wines were extremely different from one another, and both were delicious! Bottles of Bending Branch Picpoul on ice at the Rhone Rangers trade tasting on Apr 8, 2025, in Austin, TX. Then, while I was at the Rhone Rangers event in Austin, I got to talk in depth with Denise Clarke, another Texas wine champion, about a wine she was pouring, a Bending Branch Picpoul (also from the Texas Hill Country). The wine was tangy and zippy (as would be expected of a Picpoul), but it also had a beautiful full-body mouthfeel, which made it a perfect gustatory blend between the two Picpouls I had poured just a few days earlier. This is the magic of thoughtful, place-informed wine tasting! In sum, it was really fun to see and taste the differences and similarities between wines via a series of events enacting the Rhone Rangers educational mission. I'll cheers to that!
