Ranchi: The Ranchi district health department on Thursday said Covid-19 cases in the state capital have jumped to four within a week. The first positive case was reported on May 24 when a Lohardaga resident tested positive after returning from Maharashtra. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Of the three new cases, two are men, aged 71 and 53 years, while the third is a 21-year-old woman. While two are in home quarantine, one is admitted to a city hospital, officials said. Ranchi civil surgeon Dr Prabhat Kumar said, "A total of 18 tests were conducted on Wednesday, all of which returned negative. While the new variant does not appear to be severe, everyone must stay alert. We are fully prepared to handle the situation." A total of 20 isolation beds have been allocated at the Sadar Hospital to manage a potential surge in cases. All community health centres and primary health centres would be provided with testing kits by Friday, health officials said. "Request for adequate supplies has been initiated," Dr Kumar said. Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) has designated 20 beds in the dengue ward for stable Covid patients. A screening OPD and sample collection facility has been set up. Departments responsible for RTPCR testing and genome sequencing have been instructed to submit their requirements for reagents and consumables. The Rims management directed the store department to maintain supplies, including 500 surgical masks, 500 PPE kits, 500 bottles of hand rub, and oxygen cylinders and masks (NRVM), as needed. Provisions include ventilator spare parts, consumables, monitors, and five reserve ventilators. The facility will maintain adequate stocks of essential medicines for effective patient care.

Ranchi: In response to a positive Covid-19 case in the city, healthcare facilities are enhancing their preparedness to manage potential outbreaks. Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) has designated a specific area for Covid screening. However, the screening will begin if symptomatic cases arise. The Sadar Hospital has reserved 20 beds for Covid patients. The hospital is conducting screenings for individuals exhibiting symptoms of the virus. Civil surgeon Dr Prabhat Kumar, said, "The hospital has reserved a 20-bed isolation ward. All oxygen cylinders and the PSA oxygen plant are being reviewed. Screenings will be conducted for individuals exhibiting respiratory symptoms. The steps aim to ensure timely identification and management of potential cases." Experts said the strain of this virus is not strong and there is no need to panic. "With the changing weather, the virus becomes active again. While Covid cases are on the rise nationwide, the virus remains weak thanks to widespread vaccination and improved immunity among people. Still, caution is necessary, especially for children, pregnant women, and the elderly, as the virus continues to mutate," he added. State health minister, Irfan Ansari said, "An increase in Covid cases is being observed across the country. Recently, the first death from Covid-19 was confirmed in Bengaluru, which has heightened vigilance nationwide. A new variant patient was also detected in the city. Our team will conduct checks at bus stands and airports in all districts of the state. We are making all these arrangements and are in alert mode." Health authorities have urged the public to remain cautious and adhere to safety protocols. While awaiting central guidelines, individuals are advised to wear masks in crowded places and practice good hygiene. Ansari inspected the isolation ward designated for Covid patients in the Sadar Hospital on Monday.

‘Ailing' Rims need immediate treatment, say patients & docs

Ranchi: Patients, attendants and in-house doctors complain of several infrastructure challenges plaguing the the state's one of the largest govt-run healthcare facilities, Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims). From defunct water coolers across multiple spots inside the hospital, damaged floors and roof, clogged washrooms, to rusted and broken railings along the steps, the hospital is battling a number of issues. The hospital serves approximately 2,500 patients every day. Patients and staff alike have raised concerns over the unmanaged infrastructure of the premier institution across several wards and outpatient and inpatient departments. Sikander Ali, an attendant with a patient from Giridih, said that they were struggling for basic facilities in the hospital for the last week since the patient was admitted to the ophthalmology department. "Patients from rural areas come here expecting better facilities. But here we could not even avail of free drinking water. Almost all the water coolers on the hospital premises are broken. We have to purchase water from outside the hospital," Ali added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Has Honda Done It Again? The New Honda CR-V is Finally Here. TheFactualist Undo Near the ophthalmology department of Rims, the railings of the stairs have been lying broken for the past six months, doctors there on condition of anonymity told TOI. "Not only near our department, the rusted railings pose risks to everybody. We have informed the authorities, but the problem persists," a junior doctor said. Damaged floors in the hospital's neurosurgery, burn wards, and various other places are also causes for concern. Transporting patients in wheelchairs become a problem, staff complain. The damaged roofs also pose safety concern as well, especially during the rainy season. "It feels like we are getting treated in some makeshift doctor's chamber. At any moment, any of the roofs can leak. It would not be a matter of shock if a roof caves in and claims lives," said Satish Oraon, a patient from Ramgarh district. When TOI contacted Rims director, Dr Raj Kumar, to know the authority's stance on addressing the ongoing infrastructural shortcomings, the director said, "There are a lot of infrastructural lapses in Rims. However, we are taking measures to address these. The govt has already been informed about the condition of the buildings and other infrastructures. The damaged portions will be repaired phase-wise as per govt direction. Meanwhile, the hospital authority is also trying to solve some of the issues within our capacity." Dr Kumar said, "We recently bought machines and other equipment at a cost of around Rs 51 crore. Another proposal of equipment costing around Rs 87 crore is in the pipeline."
