39 days till the Arizona Cardinals' 2025 season opener: Who has worn No. 39?
With 39 days till the Cardinals open the season against the Saints, we look at the players who have worn No. 39. We are counting down to the start of the 2025 regular season for the Arizona Cardinals, and we are less than six weeks away. They will open the season on the road against the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 7. That is 39 days away. As we count down the remaining days of the offseason, let's look at who has worn that number uniform over the years for the Cardinals. Who has worn No. 39? Cardinals players to wear No. 39 2024 seventh-round pick Jaden Davis, a cornerback, currently wears No. 39. He was just placed on injured reserve with a knee injury. There have not been many to wear No. 39. Harrell wore it the longest, while Johnny Johnson probably was the best. His rookie season in 1990 was solid. He finished second in Offensive Rookie of the Year to Emmitt Smith and made the Pro Bowl and nearly matched him in rushing yards and total scrimmage yards. Cardinals training camp: Zaven Collins getting some ILB looks
The Arizona Cardinals began their second week of training camp this week and early in the week, there was an interesting change. Those in attendance noticed that outside linebacker Zaven Collins was in a different position. He was lined up off the ball at inside linebacker with Mack Wilson. This, of course, would be a very interesting change, as he was drafted originally to play inside linebacker but moved to the edge when Jonathan Gannon became head coach. He also saw snaps at outside linebacker. This led to a question for head coach Jonathan Gannon on Tuesday — what is the plan with Collins? The plan, per Gannon, is to "play outside linebacker and utilize his versatility." So will we see him at both positions? Perhaps, but this isn't anything different than how he has been used over the last two years. Collins will tell you that he hasn't just been at the edge. He has lined up on inside on the defensive line, played off the ball and blitzed from the inside. It just happened to be that on those snaps, he was back where he started. The Cardinals' third-down package on defense, sometimes called their "Nascar" package because it deploys five or six linebackers with either one or no defensive tackle on the field. They all stand up at the line of scrimmage, makinig it difficult for the opposing quarterback to identify who is rushing, who is dropping and where the assignments on defense will be. So while it was surprising in practice to see him in an old spot, we shouldn't expect it much once the regular season begins. Cardinals training camp: DL Darius Robinson has something to prove in his second season
Many players on the Cardinals' roster have something to prove in training camp. DL Darius Robinson is one of them. The Arizona Cardinals kicked off their second week of training camp on Monday with the pads finally coming on. The competition between players and position battles continue. We have detailed a number of key position battles for the team. Aside from those battles, there are some individual players who have something to prove in camp this year. One such player is second-year defensive lineman Darius Robinson. Cardinals DL Darius Robinson has something to prove Robinson, a first-round pick in 2024, had a disaster of a rookie season. After looking solid in limited preseason work, he injured his calf before the season and lost half the year. Then his mother died and the calf didn't do well in his firts practice back, so he only ended up playing in six games, a total of 183 snaps. He had 10 tackles and a sack. The Cardinals added Calais Campbell and Dalvin Tomlinson in free agency, brought back L.J. Collier and drafted Walter Nolen. Justin Jones is coming back from a season-ending injury. He has a lot of competition for playing time. To avoid looking like a first-round bust, which has happened to almost every first-round defensive lineman the Cardinals have drafted since coming to Arizona, he will need to really step up. Now, early returns in camp have been great. He looks disruptive, but he needs to keep that up and make plays when the regular season rolls around. Cardinals training camp: Once-promising OLB BJ Ojulari has something to prove in camp
The Cardinals look like they have moved on without counting on BJ Ojulari. He has something to prove in training camp. The Arizona Cardinals kicked off their second week of training camp on Monday with the pads finally coming on. The competition between players and position battles continue. We have detailed a number of key position battles for the team. Aside from those battles, there are some individual players who have something to prove in camp this year. One of them is third-year outside linebacker BJ Ojulari. OLB BJ Ojulari has something to prove Ojulari, a second-round pick in 2023, has not gotten any traction in his NFL career. Hampered by a knee injury in the offseason of his rookie season, he was brought along slowly and showed promise in the second half of the year. Expected to become perhaps the team's most productive pass rusher in 2024, he tore his ACL in the preseason. Since then, they extended Zaven Collins, traded for and re-signed Baron Browning, signed Josh Sweat to a big free agent deal and drafted Jordan Burch. In essence, they made plans without him. What is worse, he started training camp on PUP, so despite having had surgery nearly a year ago, he is not cleared to play. Is he going to go the way of Cam Thomas and Myjai Sanders, one-time promising pass rushers who fizzle out or get traded? He certainly could be used, but if there is any hope that he can be what most of us thought he could a year ago, he has to prove himself once he is cleared to practice.
