How you can save money by recycling your old clothes and empty bottles

As households face tighter budgets, high street retailers are increasingly getting into secondhand and recycling initiatives. Previously the preserve of online marketplaces and secondhand shopping apps, retailers are now offering financial incentives in exchange for items such as used clothing and empty containers. Consumer expert Helen Dewdney, The Complaining Cow, outlines how consumers can benefit by exchanging unwanted goods for rewards. These programmes usually involve payments or vouchers for packaging materials that can be reused, including items destined for recycling bins, such as empty bottles and containers. Under the Shwopping scheme customers can donate old clothes to Oxfam and receive a £5 voucher to spend on purchases of more than £35 at M&S. Boots runs the Scan2Recycle programme, which accepts products difficult to recycle at home, including composite materials (metal and plastics) and non-recyclable items like toothpaste tubes and lotion pumps. Small cosmetics such as travel-sized products and samples are also accepted. Customers must download the app, wash and scan items to have them validated before dropping them off at participating stores. Recycling five or more eligible items earns £5 in Advantage Card points, redeemable on purchases over £10 within three days. View the full list of all the items that can be brought to their stores. Customers can bring any empty perfume bottle, regardless of where it was bought, to receive 15% off a same-day purchase at The Perfume Shop. The retailer also commits to planting a tree for each bottle donated. Through its Take Back scheme, customers may drop off at least three clothing items in a box at at more than 200 stores nationwide or arrange a courier collection, which River Island will pay for. Participants receive a £5 voucher valid on purchases over £40 for one month. Donations do not need to be River Island products. John Lewis offers two programs: BeautyCycle and FashionCycle. BeautyCycle provides a £5 voucher for spending over £50 when customers return five or more clean, empty beauty product containers from specified B Corp certified brands such as Clarins, Elemis, Aveda and L'Occitane. FashionCycle offers a £5 discount on clothing rentals over £50 in exchange for five clothing items, subject to certain restrictions. Customers can return qualifying Lush packaging to receive 50p per item or 5p per 10ml sample pot. Alternatively, five returned items can be exchanged for a face mask. H&M accepts a carrier bag of unwanted clothing or textiles of any brand or condition in-store and offers a £5 voucher for purchases over £25. 'I'm a shopping writer and this stylish River Island dress is my payday pick'

If you're in the mood to treat yourself now that payday has finally arrived, this stylish River Island buy is what I'd recommend adding to your basket this month Payday is finally here after what feels like one of the longest months, and if you're anything like me, you've mentally spent half your paycheck already. However, this year I'm all about shopping more consciously and not over-purchasing products I'll only wear or use once, and so I'm limiting myself to just one treat (maybe two) per month. Part of my job involves scrolling through new-in sections, so I'm pretty clued up on what's around this month, and one dress in particular was my standout for May's payday. The dress in question is River Island's Blue Atlas Printed Maxi dress, priced at £56. A few other items did catch my eye, including Topshop's poplin pull-on wide-leg trousers in green stripe, £40, Abercrombie & Fitch's Scarlett Mid Rise Sequin Mini Skort, £65, and Phlur's new Beach Skin Body Mist, £25. However, the maxi dress came out on top this month. River Island has collaborated with Atlas, founded by contemporary artist Adrianne Dimitrakakis, and the collection is literally my dream summer holiday wardrobe in one range. As soon as I spotted the printed maxi dress, I knew it would be the perfect payday splurge. The whole collaboration is about capturing the fun and essence of travel through playful prints and vibrant colours. And that's exactly what this maxi dress does. If you're into joyful and dopamine dressing, this is the perfect summer wardrobe addition. With a flattering square neckline, sleeveless cut, and playful print, this maxi totally nails that relaxed-but-stylish vibe that I look to channel when I'm on holiday. The cotton-linen blend is ideal for the summer months. Both fabrics are known for their breathability and natural moisture-wicking properties, meaning this dress will keep you cool, airy, and dry. Of course, the bold sun and palm tree-print design is the biggest appeal of this dress. Simply chuck on a pair of toe-ring sandals and some oversized sunnies for a beach-to-alfresco dinner outfit. If you have little ones, the dress will also be available to shop in girls' sizes for £36. This is currently not in stock but will be coming soon.

Millie Mackintosh's £60 Chelsea Flower Show dress is perfect for summer events

Millie Mackintosh wore a floral maxi dress from her Friends Like These collection with Next, and it's the perfect occasionwear dress that'll see you through all your summer events When she attended last week's Chelsea Flower Show, Millie Mackintosh not only nailed the floral theme in her maxi dress, but she also gave us some instant inspo on how to dress for summer occasions, too. The former Made in Chelsea star wore the Cream Chiffon Occasion Ruffle Maxi Dress from her Friends Like These collection, and it was everything we were looking for when it came to even dressing. The dress is available at Next for £59 and is part of Millie's latest spring/summer collection with the brand, and was designed to be the perfect elevated evening or occasion look. It's currently available in all sizes from 8 to 22, although the 8 is currently sold out. The maxi dress features a flattering V-neckline and has frill detailing along the neckline as well as along the underbust seam. This combined with the tie bow in the centre and fluttering short sleeves also give it a breezy, romantic feel. It's made from lightweight chiffon which makes it comfortable to wear and perfect for warmer weather, and gives it a floaty look that nails this season's boho trend. The two-tiered hemline also adds a little volume and drama that makes it more evening appropriate. Although the colourful floral print makes it perfect for the summer, if you've got a wedding coming up and think it might be too predominantly white to wear, we've found some other great high street options to shop, too. This ASOS DESIGN Petite Flutter Sleeve Maxi Dress With Ruffle Godets in Pink Floral Print is £70 and has a similar silhouette to Milly's gorgeous dress. It has short flutter sleeves that help cover your upper arms and a sweetheart neckline, and is more fitted in the bodice than Milly's flowing maxi dress. However the skirt features vertical ruffle details that give it plenty of movement and flow, whilst the pink floral print makes sure you don't end up wearing too much white to a wedding. Meanwhile River Island's limited edition Blue Floral Ruffle Slip Maxi Dress is £85 and features a bold blue background with an oversized white floral print that's perfect for making an impact. It has asymmetrical straps and a simple ruffle detail on the shoulder, whilst the dress itself has a classic bias cut slip style that's flattering and chic. However if you want to copy Millie's style, you can snap up her Cream Chiffon Occasion Ruffle Maxi Dress in sizes 10 to 22 for £59 at Next now.

This Morning host says ITV has changed long-standing clothing rule after decades

This Morning host Rochelle Humes has shared her happiness after ITV bosses made a long-standing rule change. Former Saturdays singer Humes is one of the daytime series' rotating list of presenters alongside Ben Shephard, Cat Deeley, Dermot O'Leary, Alison Hammond, Sian Welby and Craig Doyle. Humes has revealed that all the hosts have been following a dress code that has been closely monitored since her first appearance alongside her husband, the JLS star Marvin Humes, in August 2013. It turns out that bosses have always instructed This Morning hosts to opt for smartwear, meaning jeans is an item of clothing that has been off the table – however, all that's changed, with denim trousers now permitted. Humes, 35, wasted no time in utilising the rule change, opting for a pair of River Island jean in Wednesday's episode (28 May). She announced the news on TikTok, stating: 'There's a new rule. We didn't used to be allowed to wear jeans, did we? But we can wear jeans now. This is amazing news for me.' The Independent has contacted ITV for comment. Humes' revelation arrives amid a huge shakeup for the channel's morning schedule. Last week, it was revealed that ITV is shortening Lorraine Kelly's hour-long show Lorraine by half and will reallocate those 30 minutes to Good Morning Britain instead, as part of a cost-cutting drive. This Morning will be unaffected by the scheduling changes, remaining in its usual time slot of 10am to 12.30pm. A source close to ITV told MailOnline: 'We were very open about the challenges in the industry and so several options were discussed – the key was ensuring Lorraine was retained and was as comfortable as possible in a changing landscape. 'Her show is still hugely valued – the show recently had its highest audience share in four years and still reaches 2.7 million people.' Earlier this month, part-time This Morning host Sian Welby admitted she was scared she would lose her stint if she told them she was pregnant before she started. The mother of one, 38, welcomed her nine-month-old daughter Ruby with her fiancé, Heart Breakfast producer Jake Beckett, last June. Welby was 20 weeks pregnant when she started co-hosting This Morning alongside O'Leary and kept her pregnancy a secret because she felt she had 'something to prove'. Speaking on Giovanna Fletcher's Happy Mum Happy Baby podcast, Welby said: 'When you first start a job, you think 'Nobody knows what I'm actually like, that I'm trustworthy' and you have to prove yourself. 'I felt like I had proven myself, that I can do this and that. When I got that first This Morning cover with Dermot, I knew I was pregnant but I didn't tell anyone.' She said: 'In the back of my mind, I was thinking 'If I tell them I'm pregnant, will this put them off getting me in again?' And will they think 'Oh she's gonna be off for ages?''
