Players very eager to go to Namibia, says Assam men's team coach Saikia

Kolkata: It's not often in India that domestic sides embark on overseas tours to gain international exposure. Even if they do, it's mostly local teams that they play against on those tours outside the country. So, when Assam leave for their Namibia tour on Wednesday — to take on Namibia men's national side for five one-day games as part of their pre-season training — it will be one of the rarest of overseas tours for any team in India. For Assam it's first-ever, as on their previous and only foreign tour in August 2018, they played against Sri Lankan club sides. The 15-member squad, under the tutelage of Assam U19 coach Subhrajit Saikia, will be captained by young batter Denish Das on this African sojourn and was made battle ready with a six-day camp held at ACA Stadium in Barsapara, Guwahati, from June 11-16. "We have been playing those exposure matches within the country so far and now we're going to another country to play against a national team. It will be a big experience for the boys to gain confidence ahead of the domestic season. They're very eager to go to Namibia," Saikia told TOI from Guwahati on Tuesday, a rest day before they depart for the tour. "In the camp we had 24 boys, and we focused on the 15 selected for the tour. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Ayushman Malakar is a young prospect, a U19 fast bowling all-rounder, who has been promoted to the senior side for this tour. Apart from him all the boys played domestic matches last season, so we have a pretty good squad. We did match simulation and played 40-over games during the preparatory camp since it's been pretty hot in Guwahati for the last few days," added the former first-class cricketer from Assam. Expecting different conditions in the Namibian capital Windhoek, Saikia said his side has all bases covered. "It's winter in Namibia now. So we are expecting the ball to move a bit there. We have four fast bowlers and three spinners. But whatever the conditions, we have the resources to overcome different situations," Saikia sounded confident of his wards. Captain Das, meanwhile, will be one of the players to look forward to on this tour. He was the Ranji Trophy skipper last season in the absence of the most famous son of the soil Riyan Parag and the 23-year-old has led by example. Wicketkeeper-batter Sumit Ghadigaonkar will be his deputy in Namibia. "Denish (Das) came up with great knocks and I think he has a good prospect to become a very good player. But we always miss Riyan. We want him to be with us, but he is in the national set-up now. Actually, it's very good that without Riyan they are coming up with good performances for Assam and they think that they can be the next big name, like Riyan," said Saikia. On a personal front, though Saikia is elated to coach the senior side on the tour, he will be happy to nurture the U19 boys again, once he comes back home. "I went to Bangladesh with the U19 team last year. So now going with a senior team to a different country, it will be a great learning experience for me. I hope I can learn many good things from this tour which I can apply with the youngsters and help them get to the next level," Saikia signed off with a promise to impart that knowledge to the age-group cricketers. The schedule: Jun 21: 1st one-day match; Jun 23: 2nd one-day; Jun 25: 3rd one-day; Jun 27: 4th one-day; Jun 29: 5th one-day (all matches in Windhoek)

Six Sixes! Riyan Parag hits an IPL first

Riyan Parag (AP Photo) Calling the game between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar likened Rajasthan Royals' captain Riyan Parag 's bowling to a 'mixed pakora — a bit of everything'. The quip to describe the 'variety in his bowling', aired on TV, came during Riyan's tidy spell that yielded one for 21. But it was with the bat that the 23-year-old served a spicier dish, becoming the first in Indian Premier League history to smash six consecutive sixes . With pressure mounting, Riyan stepped up. Facing KKR's seasoned spinner Moeen Ali in the 13th over, he unleashed a breathtaking assault. The second ball he faced soared over deep square leg, the next cleared long-on, and the fourth and fifth rocketed over square leg and long-on again. Moeen, desperate to disrupt Riyan's rhythm, bowled a wide, but the reprieve was brief. Parag hammered the next delivery over long-off, completing five sixes in the over. In the next over, Shimron Hetmyer took a single, bringing Parag back on strike. With a cheeky reverse-sweep, he dispatched Varun Chakravarthy over backward point, sealing six sixes in a row. But despite his valiant effort, the Royals lost by one run.

IPL 2025: KKR survive Riyan Parag scare, win thriller vs RR to remain in playoffs race

Riyan Parag's career-best 95 and Shubham Dubey's late cameo were not enough for Rajasthan Royals, as Kolkata Knight Riders clinched a crucial IPL 2025 victory at home by just 1 run on Sunday, 4 May. KKR successfully defended 207 at Eden Gardens, much to the frustration of the Royals, who have developed an unfortunate habit of losing matches from winning KKR vs RR Highlights - Scorecard | Needing 22 runs off the final over, Rajasthan's Shubham Dubey, who had struggled with his timing, reignited hope for the visitors by striking two sixes and a four, reducing the equation to just 3 needed from the last delivery. However, medium-pacer Vaibhav Arora scripted his own redemption, nailing a pinpoint yorker after a patchy over to seal the win with the final ball. Shubham and Rajasthan fell agonisingly short by a solitary run. Eden Gardens erupted in celebration as Kolkata triumphed in the last-ball thriller, moving up to sixth place in the IPL 2025 points table. With 11 points from as many matches, KKR remain firmly in the hunt for a playoff Rajasthan dugout was left devastated, as Riyan Parag had single-handedly hauled the team from 71 for 5 and kept them within touching distance of victory. The stand-in captain, however, perished in the 18th over while trying to release the pressure that had mounted due to Dubey's earlier struggles with timing. Spinners Varun Chakravarthy and Moeen Ali were making life difficult on a pitch that favoured the slower bowlers. However, Riyan Parag and Shimron Hetmyer stitched together a 92-run partnership in just 48 balls for the sixth wicket to keep their hopes seemed improbable, and it appeared as though the first match of Sunday's double-header was heading for an early finish. However, Riyan played without fear of failure, maintaining his aggressive tempo from the powerplay. He had already taken the attack to Harshit Rana as early as the fourth over, and he continued in the same vein against Moeen Ali, who had looked threatening until the pivotal over arrived. The England spinner had conceded just 11 runs and claimed two wickets in his first two overs, but Riyan dismantled him with remarkable Rajasthan Royals' stand-in captain struck five consecutive sixes in the 13th over, single-handedly shifting the momentum of the game. In doing so, Riyan emulated the likes of Chris Gayle, Ravindra Jadeja and Rinku Singh, who have also hit five consecutive sixes in an over. He then made it six in a row by dispatching Varun Chakravarthy for a six via a reverse sweep in the next over. Riyan's clean striking against the spinners was on full display as the right-hander swept and slog-swept Ali with effortless precision, denying the off-spinner any relief even with a wider Hetmyer, who had been struggling for form this season, finally showed glimpses of his best, hitting a six and a boundary in his 23-ball 29. Hetmyer was content to play second fiddle, rotating the strike and allowing Riyan to continue his struck eight sixes and six boundaries and appeared poised for his maiden IPL century. However, in the 18th over, he fell to Harshit Rana, agonisingly short of the milestone by just five was a breathtaking knock, but the Rajasthan captain ultimately could not see his side home. The youngster felt the weight of the scoreboard pressure after the flow of boundaries dried up following Hetmyer's Rana made a decisive impact with the ball for Ajinkya Rahane's side in the death overs. In the 16th over, Rana bowled a sharp bouncer to remove Hetmyer and break the partnership that had threatened to take the game away. He then claimed the crucial wicket of Riyan, leaving the Royals' chase in substitute Shubham Dubey was unable to provide the necessary acceleration, slowing the innings and failing to sustain the momentum after Hetmyer's departure. AP The struggling Rajasthan Royals will be hoping to keep themselves mathematically alive in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) when they face the top-ranked Gujarat Titans in Jaipur on Monday. RR and GT couldn't have had more contrasting campaigns this year – while the Royals find themselves on the verge of becoming the first team to officially bow out of the playoffs race, having lost seven out of nine matches so far, the Titans currently occupy the second spot after winning six out of eight games. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD GT had thrashed RR by 58 runs when the two teams had met at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium earlier this season.
