RTA completes upgrade of 22 bus stations in Dubai

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed the improvements of 22 public bus stations across the emirate, including 16 passenger stations and 6 bus depots. These efforts are part of a strategic plan to expand the public transport network, raise service quality, and provide safe and integrated mobility services that meet the expectations of Dubai's residents and visitors, said RTA in a statement. The project involved the upgrade of 16 passenger bus stations, including nine in Deira and seven in Bur Dubai. Works included refurbishing passenger waiting areas, renovating building façades, modernising infrastructure systems and pavements, and providing prayer areas at selected locations. These stations serve 110 bus routes with a peak-hour capacity of around 710 buses, it stated. According to RTA, six major bus depots were upgraded in Al Khawaneej, Al Qusais, Al Ruwayah, Al Awir, Jebel Ali, and Al Quoz. The works involved revamping workshops, preparing dedicated lanes for inspection and maintenance, installing engine washing systems, upgrading driver accommodation facilities, improving lighting and drainage networks, reinforcing security systems infrastructure, and redesigning bus parking areas to maximise operational efficiency, it stated. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA said: "The project complements RTA's efforts to enhance the public transport infrastructure and encourage residents to use mass transit for their daily commuting." "The bus depots serve as key hubs for the maintenance and cleaning of the bus fleet, which currently stands at 1,387 buses," noted Al Tayer. "We were keen to ensure that the role of bus stations goes beyond mere waiting areas to include offering integrated services that make passengers' journeys easier and more enjoyable through improved facilities, safer and more comfortable environments for all categories of users, especially People of Determination and cyclists, besides targeting seamless integration with Dubai Metro and taxi services," he added. This project forms part of RTA's broader vision to strengthen connections between various public transport modes through first and last-mile solutions. Enhancements promote easier access to stations by supporting pedestrian pathways, bicycle parking, and safe crossings, thereby encouraging the use of sustainable transport options. The achievement complements previous RTA projects, including the development of modern stations at key locations such as Al Ghubaiba, Union, Al Jafiliya, Oud Metha, Al Satwa, Etisalat, Al Baraha, International City, and Dubai International Airport (Terminal 3). -TradeArabia News Service Copyright 2024 Al Hilal Publishing and Marketing Group Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. 'We aim to transform bus stations from simple waiting areas into fully integrated service hubs that improve the overall travel experience for all passengers including people of determination and cyclists while supporting seamless connectivity with the Metro and taxi networks.' The RTA is looking to invest in its bus fleet to meet European low-emission standards, which would be a first for the Middle East and North Africa region. Dubai adds prayer areas, improves waiting spaces as it upgrades 22 bus stations

Dubai has upgraded 22 bus stations across the emirate, including 16 passenger stations and 6 bus depots. The emirate's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) renovated passenger waiting areas, pavements, and building facades. As part of the upgrade, prayer areas were also provided at select locations. The improvements took place at nine passenger bus stations in Deira and seven in Bur Dubai, which serve 110 bus routes with a peak-hour capacity of around 710 buses. Upgrades were also conducted at six major bus depots in Al Khawaneej, Al Qusais, Al Ruwayah, Al Awir, Jebel Ali, and Al Quoz. The works included revamping workshops, preparing dedicated lanes for inspection and maintenance and installing engine washing systems. In addition, the authority improved driver accommodation facilities, lighting and drainage networks, security systems infrastructure, and redesigned bus parking areas for efficiency. "The project complements RTA's efforts to enhance the public transport infrastructure and encourage residents to use mass transit for their daily commuting," said Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Roads and Transport Authority. Dubai will also soon get 637 new public buses complying with the European 'Euro 6' low-emission standards — the first of their kind in the Middle East and North Africa. The delivery will take place in 2025 and 2026. RTA recently signed an agreement to procure these buses, which includes 40 fully electric, zero-emission buses from Zhongtong, tailored to Gulf specifications and tested regionally. Each electric bus is 12 metres long and accommodates 72 passengers. This represents the largest and first-of-its-kind electric bus contract in the UAE. The emirate's bus procurement efforts also includes the supply of 451 city buses: These vehicles are specifically intended for high-density urban areas and emerging communities, supporting broader geographic coverage across Dubai while enhancing occupancy rates.

Dubai Metro Blue Line project to disrupt Mirdif traffic, RTA warns

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority on Tuesday warned motorists of traffic diversions in the Mirdif area as construction work is set to begin on the Dubai Metro Blue Line. The authority also advised drivers to use alternative routes where possible and to plan their trips in advance. The roundabout intersection between 5th and 8th street near City Centre Mirdif will be closed, with a diversion in place. This will also be the case in the opposite direction, from 8th to 5th street towards Algeria Street. An alternative access road will be provided for City Centre Mirdif mall visitors, the authority added, with an available U-turn in place for residents near Ghoroob Square. What is Dubai Metro Blue Line? Work began on the Metro project in June after an announcement from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai. The Blue Line is set to transform the north-east of the city, easing traffic congestion and establishing a direct link with Dubai International Airport. The Dh18 billion ($4,9 billion) project will include 14 new stations and add 30km to the Metro network, with 15.5km of it underground. The expansion is part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which has easier commuting among its top priorities to cater for a fast-growing population. Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority said the Blue Line would connect five principal urban regions of Dubai – Bur Dubai/Deira, Downtown/Business Bay, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Dubai Marina/JBR and Expo City Dubai. When completed, the Metro network will be 131km long and encompass 78 stations served by 168 trains. The number of Dubai Metro passengers is expected to exceed 300 million in 2026 and reach 320 million by 2031, Dubai Media Office reports.
