Dubai refreshes look of Umm Suqeim Street as part of upgrade

Umm Suqeim Street is set for an upgrade. Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) have announced an initiative to landscape the thoroughfare from its intersection with Jumeirah Street to Al Khail Road. The project is part of plans to develop Jumeirah Street, Al Safa Street, and Al Wasl Street. Mattar Al Tayer, director general at the RTA, took to social media platform X to say that the new project goes beyond traditional road widening and development 'by integrating creative and aesthetic enhancements into the surrounding urban landscape.' 'It features upgraded pedestrian walkways, a dedicated cycling track, and complete streets (boulevards), alongside vibrant urban spaces designed to foster community interaction and create inclusive, dynamic environments,' he said. He said that the new project will support the expanding population as it will 'increase Umm Suqeim Street's capacity to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.' The road refresh, will include the development of six intersections featuring four bridges and three tunnels spanning 4,100 metres in total. For commuters, the plans are set to strengthen connectivity across Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road. The project is expected to cut travel time between Jumeirah Street and Al Khail Road from 20 minutes to six minutes. In a statement, the RTA said that the development will establish a direct link between Mall of the Emirates Metro Station and nearby residential communities. Plans are also expected to enable free-flowing traffic over a 20km stretch from Jumeirah to Al Qudra Road. Tackling traffic Dubai's roads are getting busier, with the emirate's toll operator recently reporting more vehicles on its system, increased journeys and surging profits. Salik said the number of registered active vehicles including motorcycles increased 9.3 per cent year-on-year to 4.47 million. There was a 7.3 per cent increase in registered drivers for the same period. According to the Ministry of Interior, 383,086 new driving licences were issued in 2024 and Dubai's Statistics Centre population clock showed 3.93 million recently – up from 3.73 million on the same day last year.

The project, which is being developed at a cost of Dh332 million, will include an 800-metre tunnel with four lanes in each direction. Traffic improvement works The RTA has also completed traffic improvement works on Street 13 in Al Warqa 1, which will particularly benefit residents and schoolgoers. These upgrades are part of a broader internal road development initiative spanning approximately 8km, designed to streamline traffic flow. Upgrades are also underway in Al Warqa 3 and 4, where internal roadworks include paving, pedestrian walkways, parking spaces, and more than 23km of cycling tracks aimed at encouraging alternative modes of transport. In Al Warqa 1, the next phase will see the conversion of roundabouts into signalised intersections equipped with smart traffic lights. This change is projected to boost traffic efficiency by up to 30%, with completion expected by the end of the year. New parking spaces RTA has already implemented enhancements around key educational institutions in Al Warqa 4, including the School of Research Science and GEMS Royal Dubai School. These include 150 new parking spaces and improved access points, which have reduced congestion in school zones by an estimated 35% to 50%. Further developments have been completed to support the Mohammed Bin Rashid Housing Establishment project in Al Warqa 4, which features 136 new residential villas. Works included pedestrian and vehicle access infrastructure, pavements, and an integrated lighting system. A dedicated 7.4km cycling track was also constructed to promote recreational and practical cycling.

Despite a 13 per cent decline in overall testing transactions, revenue levels remained stable. Of the users, 52 per cent opted for pre-booking, 26 per cent used the walk-in service, and the remaining 22 completed services not requiring prior appointments. Qais Al Farsi, director of Vehicle Licensing at He added: 'The wider rollout of the initiative across vehicle testing centres is expected to yield several key benefits, most notably saving customers time and effort, reducing waiting times by around 40 percent, and improving occupancy rates, particularly at centres where utilisation had previously exceeded 80 percent.' Al Farsi noted that the booking system will be mandatory for all customer and vehicle categories, except for vehicles registered in Dubai and owned by People of Determination and seniors, both citizens and residents. RTA Expands Vehicle Inspection Appointment Booking Service Across All Testing Centres in Dubai

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has activated the Vehicle Inspection Appointment Booking service on the 'RTA Dubai' app and the website Effective 2nd June 2025, the booking will be mandatory for all vehicle inspections at technical testing centres across the emirate. For customers who prefer to visit without a prior appointment, an optional walk-in service will be available at 19 centres, subject to an additional service fee of AED 100. The Technical Inspection services through pre-booking appointments are available at 8 other centres, without the walk-in service at these eight centres. The centres are Wasel Al Arabian Centre & Nad Al Hamar, Shamil Al Adid, Al Muhaisnah and Nad Al Hamar, Al Mumayaz Vehicle Testing Al Mizhar, and Tasjeel Al Tawar and Al Mankhool. The decision to expand the service follows the tangible success of the pilot phase, launched in October last year exclusively at the Tasjeel centres in Al Qusais and Al Barsha. The initiative proved effective in saving customers time and effort. Through this expansion, RTA aims to enhance the quality of this vital service, which benefits a broad segment of the population, and to improve customer satisfaction by reducing waiting times for vehicle inspections. The move also reflects RTA's commitment to enriching the customer experience by providing seamless access to premium services across multiple channels. The results of the six-month pilot phase revealed a notable reduction in average customer waiting times for vehicle inspection services at the Al Qusais and Al Barsha centres, by approximately 46%, alongside a 15% decrease in the occupancy rate of physical inspection transactions relative to total available capacity. The volume of vehicle testing transactions at both centres also declined by 13%. Despite this reduction, revenue levels remained unaffected. Additionally, 52% of customers chose to use the pre-booking system, 26% of transactions were completed via the optional walk-in service, and the remaining 22% were for other services that did not require prior appointments. Qais Al Farsi, Director of Vehicle Licensing at RTA's Licensing Agency, said: 'The outcomes of the pilot phase demonstrated a clear improvement and a positive shift in reducing congestion at inspection centres, particularly during peak hours, one of the most persistent challenges at these facilities.' 'The wider rollout of the initiative across vehicle testing centres is expected to yield several key benefits, most notably saving customers time and effort, reducing waiting times by around 40%, and improving occupancy rates, particularly at centres where utilisation had previously exceeded 80%,' he added. Al Farsi further noted: 'The appointment booking system has been made mandatory for all customer and vehicle categories at technical testing centres, except for vehicles registered in Dubai and owned by People of Determination and seniors, both citizens and residents. These individuals are exempt from the booking requirement for vehicle inspection services, in line with RTA's commitment to ensuring accessible and inclusive service delivery for these two key customer segments.' A total of 27 technical testing centres across Dubai now require booking for vehicle inspections via the RTA Dubai smart app or website ( Tasjeel Hatta centre is exempt from the appointment booking requirement. .
