Cyndi Lauper on if She'd Want Chappell Roan to Induct Her at Rock Hall of Fame: 'She's Really Great'
Cyndi Lauper has long been considered one of pop music's most vocal advocates for women and the LGBTQ community, and amid her upcoming farewell concert tour and recently announced induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, that seems to be the legacy she's hoping to leave behind. 'I think it's nice to get awards. It really is. And it's nice to be recognized after you've worked real hard at something. But I also think, 'what can I do to create change? What can I do to make it better?'' Lauper told Lori Majewski on Sirius XM's Fierce: Women in Music program. 'Not just for me, not even just for my gender but for the people that come afterwards: the planet, the people, the kids. If you look at the young artists, the painters and you look at what they're doing a lot, some of it's very apocalyptic, and that's because they ain't got hope. And I think the most important thing you can do is give people hope. That's what I wanna try and do.' Her Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour will resume in the U.S. in July and wrap up with two nights at the Hollywood Bowl in August. Lauper's full interview will air on SiriusXM on May 22. Several clips from the conversation are below, courtesy of SiriusXM. Elsewhere in the interview, Lauper commended Chappell Roan, who several critics have likened to Lauper as Roan has made her ascent to pop superstardom over the past year. Majewski suggested Roan should induct Lauper into the Rock Hall, though Lauper herself didn't directly address that. 'I think she's really great. There's a lot of great young artists, I think she's really great,' Lauper said. And when she had the long red hair, I was laughing because I wore a very long red wig when I did the Berlin Wall. And then I did again when I did a tour, I had very long red wig. I was laughing because I saw her on the horse with the long red wig. I was like, 'That's really good. I like it myself.' Majewski herself called Roan 'a modern day Cyndi Lauper' and a 'direct descendent' to the icon, both because of the music as well as Roan's advocacy for the LGBTQ community. 'She is LGBTQ, and for me, I'm friend and family [to the community],' Lauper said. I don't think you should ever stand by and allow that kind of discrimination and prejudice against a community ever.' Lauper then recalled German pastor Martin Niemöller's famous 'First They Came' poem about WWII and the Holocaust, and speaking out over injustices toward groups other than your own. 'It's really important that people remember [the poem's message] when they say, 'never forget.' It seems like everybody did,' she said. 'You gotta share your story so that people understand that we are a community of human beings. And human beings, we're all different. And thank God we're all different. Because if everybody was the same, there'd be no new ideas. There'd be no food recipes that are new. There'd be nothing, no color. There'd be nothing.' When asked about the 'girls just want to have fundamental rights' shirts Lauper's fund of the same name sells to raise money for women's health and rights, Lauper recalled being brought to tears seeing younger women holding up signs with the same message at protests and women's marches in recent years. She confirmed it's what inspired her to launch the fund back in 2022. 'When I was talking about women rights in the '80s, everybody was like, 'What are you talking about? Why can't you just shut up and sing?' I was like, 'Yeah, when I get that lobotomy, I could,'' Lauper said. 'I felt that the most important thing when I saw those signs … I cried because I went through so much. But there were actually young women that actually heard me.' After seeing the signs at rallies, she contacted those who helped her launch True Colors United — an organization aimed at combating homelessness for LGBT youth — and enlisted their help to start the new fund too. At the end of April, Girls Just Want To Have Fundamental Rights announced a $150,000 donation gifted across eight organizations around the world. 'I thought was really important to be able to help in these times and acknowledge those young women. They heard me. Well, I heard you too,' she said. 'And I'm gonna help too. I can't just stand by and not do anything.' Woman Linked to Chappell Roan Post—Unprepared for What Internet Does Next
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A small perfume business owner has shared her bewilderment after seeing a sudden spike in sales—she later discovered, to a cryptic Instagram post from pop star Chappell Roan. The owner, who runs Thin Wild Mercury (@thinwildmercury), posted a video asking for help solving the mystery of the unexpected sales boost. The TikTok quickly took off, amassing over 20,500 likes and 345,700 views. It all began when Roan posted on Instagram: "Will the girl who I just met at the perfume store please comment the perfume you recommended I wrote it down and just deleted it on accident. The word 'girl' was in the brand name & you said it smelled like lipstick. Thank you." Fans quickly swarmed the Hot to Go singer's post with one prevailing theory: she was talking about Girl of the Year, a scent by Thin Wild Mercury. As it turns out, the perfume's first note is—"lipstick." Still in the dark, the business owner was casually drinking a smoothie when her phone started blowing up with orders. She checked social media but couldn't immediately figure out what had triggered the sudden attention. "The shock I felt when someone dmed me a Chappell Roan post. It was insane. The way that her caption hit me when I read it was that she was in a perfume store chatting with somebody, and based off of what she was saying, they recommended something that she wasn't able to smell in the store and suggested perhaps my perfume," she explained. However, the mystery took a turn when debate erupted in the comments over whether the perfume in question was actually Girl of the Year or Good Girl by Carolina Herrera, which comes in a stiletto-shaped bottle. A TikTok user, @jessica_yk92, joined in, claiming to be the perfume store worker and saying the scent Roan was after was indeed Herrera's Good Girl. But shortly after, she admitted she was just joking. Chappell Roan attends the 67th GRAMMY Awards at Arena on February 02, 2025, in Los Angeles, California. I wasn't expecting this comment to get this many likes as it did I was just having a laugh. Please forgive me @chappellroan and the fans. I hope the real girl does come forward and gets a lifetime supply I feel so bad." The scent debate didn't end there. TikTokers joined in with curiosity and commentary. "What does it mean to smell like 'lipstick'?" asked Madison. "It's just like a base cosmetic smell. if you'd ever smelled like unscented lotion it's similar lol," responded danisjustwatching. "It has to be Girl Of The Year! The lipstick note is addicting and came to mind immediately when I saw the post!" said Landon. Eventually, the mystery was solved. The Thin Wild Mercury owner revealed that the girl from the perfume store—named Maggie—had reached out directly and confirmed the story. She also commented on the original TikTok: "It was actually me, I told her about girl of the year at scent bar. Suggested she buy both sample sets and play around no idea it was her when I mentioned it. You deserve your flowers!" Maggie later followed up with an email with the subject line: "The Chappell Roan thing lol," explaining that she recommended Girl Of The Year after hearing the pop star was looking for a "lip scented perfume." She confessed she didn't recognize Roan at the time—she doesn't listen to her music—but her friend realized it was the singer after spotting her tattoos as they left the shop. "So this is a cool story, but Chappell Roan has not smelled my perfume yet. She's just intrigued by it and interested in trying it out, so hopefully she does," the business owner concluded. TikTok users rallied in support of the brand and the moment: "Aww Maggie seems so sweet, I hope you'll send her the Laurel Canyon she's on the hunt for!" said Laura. "Omg so happy for you! you totally deserve the hype!!!" commented @spacegirlamber. "LOVE this for you," added @Elliescent. Newsweek reached out to @thinwildmercury and Maggie, @petillantbrat, for comment via social media. We could not verify the details of the case. Chappell Roan Looks Unrecognizable in Strawberry Blonde Hair
Chappell Roan has become known for a few things: being a Grammy-winning artist, a music festival legend, and her vibrant red hair. The 'Pink Pony Club' singer could likely be spotted from afar just from her lengthy auburn curls alone, which is why it was so jarring to see her in any other hairstyle. On Friday, May 16, Roan shared a carousel of photos on Instagram, showing off a new hairdo that's different from her usual long locks. Instead of her thick curly hair cascading down her back, Roan was rocking a straight, strawberry blonde hairstyle. Obviously, any shade of ginger seems to be her color, but this lighter version is definitely a step away from her darker locks. Roan said on her Instagram Story that she redownloaded the social media app in search of a perfume, and echoed the sentiment under her caption: 'Will the girl who I just met at the perfume store please comment the perfume you recommended. I wrote it down and just deleted it on accident. The world 'girl' was in the brand name & you said it smelled like lipstick. Thank you.' In the photos, Roan is shown standing in an elevator, holding a coffee cup, and wearing a plaid scarf wrapped around her shoulders, along with sunglasses. Her strawberry blonde hair hangs straight down past her shoulders. In the second photo, Roan shows a closer view of the hair, along with her glasses and dark lip. It's unclear whether Chappell Roan dyed her hair this color, or if she's simply wearing a wig. The musician isn't one to shy away from wigs or other fun disguises — like when she showed up to Gov Ball last year in full Statue of Liberty drag, complete with a green-colored wig. Time will tell on if the hair is here to stay. Originally Appeared on Teen Vogue Want more style stories from Teen Vogue? Check these out: Where Did All The Tween Fashion Go? Fitness, glam and furry friends at the centre of well-being week at Wexford school
Those in attendance that week, experienced a programme of fun, relaxation and personal growth, carefully co-ordinated by teachers Ms Whelan and Mr Curran, which was enthusiastically embraced by all. 'At CBS New Ross, we believe that academic success goes hand-in-hand with physical and mental well-being. This special week allowed us to highlight the importance of self-care practices and provide students with tools they can use throughout their lives,' a spokesperson for the school said. To kick the week off, the school community was greeted by furry friends with an animal therapy session in the form of a petting zoo visit from Nore Valley, which brought a variety of friendly animals to the school grounds. The smiles and laughter that filled the area were testament to how effective animal interactions can be in reducing stress and increasing happiness. Tuesday's event included a session to get the students moving with a Zumba dance class, and according to Ms Whelan, 'they were a huge hit'. The session was led by professional instructors, and the high-energy dance sessions got hearts pumping and endorphins flowing. 'It was wonderful to see students of all abilities joining in and enjoying the experience,' she said. Wednesday's hair and makeup workshops explored self-expression through personal style and the workshops continued the trend of being extremely popular among students. Professional stylists were welcomed to the school and shared tips and techniques while discussing how outward appearance can reflect and boost inner confidence. Many students discovered new talents and interests during these sessions. The following day, students were captivated by guest speaker, David Power, the former manager for Tipperary Gaelic football team, as he delivered a talk on building resilience. Mr Power shared valuable insights on developing mental toughness, coping with challenges, and bouncing back from setbacks. "The question and answer sessions that followed, demonstrated just how engaged our students were with these important topics and how they can relate to them in their own lives,' said Ms Whelan. When the session concluded, a bouncy castle obstacle course awaited the students for a 'fun and fitness session'. The competitive streak was strong among the students as they challenged themselves and each other to complete the inflatable obstacle course, while combining physical exercise with plenty of laughter. Thursday's events didn't end there, as the Transition Year (TY) students showcased their mini-company products at the Well-being Week market, and a wide variety of fantastic products were on sale, while later, TY student, Roan English, took on the role of fitness instructor. Roan was leading English classes with 40 students at a time, in a challenging but fun workout. They took to the yard outside to get the best of the good weather while working out. 'Roan really rose to the occasion in leading his fellow peers in this exciting workout. Roan is a rugby star and definitely one to watch for the future,' Ms Whelan commented. To round-off Well-being Week, students and staff enjoyed a whole school walk, embracing the outdoors and the benefits of physical activity together. Adding to the excitement, it was also bring your dog to school day, where several teachers introduced their furry companions to the school community. Ms Whelan explained the impact of the activity on the students. ADVERTISEMENT 'The dogs brought smiles, sparked conversations, and created a warm, joyful atmosphere, highlighting the positive impact animals can have on mental well-being. It was a memorable end to a week dedicated to health, happiness, and connection.' In highlighting the importance of Well-being Week in the school community, Ms Whelan said 'it wasn't just about taking care of ourselves, it was also about supporting others,' as charity activities also took place for the Irish Cancer Society. 'Students enthusiastically participated in our Splash the Teachers event, where they had the opportunity to soak their favourite teachers with water balloons and buckets. The laughter was contagious, and teachers were great sports for this worthy cause,' she continued, adding that the event raised over €500 for cancer research and support services. Given the overwhelmingly positive response to Well-being Week, the teachers have confirmed they are already planning similar events for next year's events. "The valuable lessons learned about self-care and mental health will continue to be incorporated into our school culture, and we would like to thank everyone who participated in the week including our external providers, staff volunteers, and the student well-being ambassadors who supported tirelessly,' Ms Whelan concluded.

Inside the Glam of Chappell Roan's First Met Gala
Tonight, your 'favorite artist's favorite artist,' Chappel Roan, is live on the 2025 Met Gala blue carpet for her first year. An absolute beauty chameleon, Roan tapped Pat McGrath to create her look—and it's the first time the pair have ever worked together. 'Beauty isn't everything, it's the only thing,' Roan has told Vogue in the past. 'I wish I made that up.' She's bringing that same passion to her look tonight. To create a Tailored to You look (the dress code for the evening), Roan worked with Paul Tazewell, the costume director from Wicket, to source something from eBay. The result is an incredibly glittery patchwork pink suit with a matching feathered cape. (Photo by Steve Eichner/WWD via Getty Images)'We channeled the glamour and freedom of the disco era—think Sylvester, Superfly, superfine tailoring, and unapologetic shine,' McGrath says of the glitzy look, which utilized her Holiday Mega: Luminous Legends shadow palette. 'We layered shimmering metallics with illustrated wings, chrome lashes, and rhinestone accents. It's maximalist, metallic, and made to move.'
