Comets in grand final revenge
After dropping their first points since 2023 in a draw last week, reigning premiers Western Roar suffered their first loss since the same period, this time going down to last year's beaten grand finalists Comets in another thriller, 53-52. Comets surged out to a four-goal lead in the first quarter, fighting desperately all game to maintain their lead through Jasmah Haywood (30 goals), Sloan Burton (18) and Madeleine Ash (five). Roar vice-captain Caitlyn Brown did all she could to keep her team in the match in her 100th GIG WANL game, backed by Sophia Lamers (36) and Asha Parsons (16). Your local paper, whenever you want it. With eight seconds remaining in the game and the scores locked, it was Haywood who tipped the Comets over the edge. Southside Demons are now just one point behind Roar on the ladder in second after a 53-43 win over Souwest Jets. Despite a 10-goal loss, the Jets will be pleased with their efforts to stay with the Demons for much of the game. Demons captain Meg Gallager stepped up with a huge 36 goals, alongside Georgia Ettridge (10), Georgia Pitt (five) and Brooke Marques (six). For the Jets, Rylee Hall (36) and Meretini Fuimaono (seven) shared the goals. Fourth-placed Western Warriors put a four-point gap between them and fifth-placed Peel Lightning with a 47-40 victory, thanks to a strong second half. Warriors Jamaica Jauncey (36), Emily Dwyer (10) and Hana Stoked (one) were all in the goals, whilst Scarlet Jauncey and Taylor Finch held down defence. Lightning kept themselves in the game through all four quarters, with Rebecca Lill (19) and Marene Peyper (15) in goals. Chelsea Cook had an uncharacteristically quiet game with just five goals. Fremantle Sharks backed up their draw with Western Roar last week with a 33-goal thrashing of Rangers 72-39 Kasey Ridout was back to her best form with 43 goals, joined by Sophie Eastaugh's 20 and Mwai Kumwenda's nine. Ranger Aisha Morcombe put in a solid effort with 30 goals but remain rooted to the bottom of the ladder.

Detroit Tigers OF/3B Matt Vierling returns from injured list; Sean Guenther optioned
At last, Matt Vierling has arrived. The Detroit Tigers activated Vierling — an outfielder/third baseman on the field and a team leader behind the scenes — from the injured list ahead of their Friday, May 23, game against the Cleveland Guardians at Comerica Park. He wasn't in the starting lineup, but he's available as a pinch-hitter off the bench. Advertisement The 28-year-old had been sidelined since Feb. 23 — the second game of spring training — with a strained rotator cuff in his right shoulder. In total, Vierling missed 51 games this season. But now, he's finally back. He had the best results of his four-year MLB career in the 2024 campaign, hitting .257 with 16 home runs, 41 walks and 121 strikeouts in 144 games. He plays all three outfield positions and third base, but he performs best in center field and right field. SHAWN WINDSOR: Playoff heartbreak? He spent five games at designated hitter, three games at third base for 21 innings, two games in right for 13 innings and one game in center for nine innings. Katy Perry narrowly avoids massive wardrobe malfunction while performing
Popstar Katy Perry expertly handled a potentially tricky moment during a live show in Las Vegas over the weekend. The I Kissed a Girl singer, 40, is currently in the middle of her Lifetimes world tour and was on stage in the Nevada city on Saturday. After her brief trip to outer space earlier this year, Katy will be coming to the UK in October, with dates planned for Belfast, Glasgow, Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham, and London. As has been shared in a number of viral clips since the start of the tour, Katy starts sprinting at one point in the show – specifically during a remix of her song Part of Me. And during her Vegas performance over the weekend, that sprint nearly resulted in an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction – but the Roar hitmaker played it off well. Starting off at jogging pace during an instrumental section, Katy ran around the circular stage in thigh-high boots and a sparkling crop top and bra combo – her outfit for the tour. The video then shows the Hot n Cold singer suddenly slowing down to a walking pace as she reaches around to try and hold the straps of her bra together. Styling out the sudden stop into a cool strut, she then laughed the situation off and let her fans know what had almost happened before asking one of her crew to put her bra back together. 'Oh, my bra's gonna come off,' she joked, dancing along to the song. She then danced for a few seconds more before realising she couldn't get her bra back together on her own. Walking over to the side of the stage, Katy signalled for one of her crew to help, saying 'Get my bra back on, Patrick' before turning to the audience and joking: 'Sorry, guys, you didn't pay that much.' Katy then got back to her performance, which immediately involved shouting 'Woah-oh!' at the top of her lungs and dramatically performing a death drop. On TikTok, fan Carlo De Santis said: 'This looks like a dream you try to explain to someone and then give up halfway through. 'Katy Perry ran her bra off and there were these guys who were half-robot swaying back and forth'… oh never mind.' However, the tour itself appears to be going along successfully, despite Katy receiving calls from critics to suspend all shows after a 'cringe' performance went viral. More Trending On X, user Mo wrote a month ago: 'She needs to cancel this tour before it cancels her career I'm so serious.' Clips circulating on social media in April showed Katy dancing on stage, swinging from side to side and throwing her hands up in the air and falling to the floor, just like in the most recent video. After watching, many people weighed in – and some were less than impressed, with TikTok user Madji saying: 'This is the worst choreography I have ever seen in my life.' Despite the calls for Katy to cancel the tour, very few tickets remain for her UK dates later in the year and several of her dates around the world have sold out. Got a story? Phoenix too good in playoff
The Wellington Phoenix secured their place in the Australia Cup round of 32 after beating the Brisbane Roar 1-0 in Wednesday night's playoff in Darwin. Kosta Barbarouses was the hero as the Phoenix great settled the midweek contest in the 39th minute. After scoring 10 goals in the A-League season, Barbarouses proved decisive once more for Wellington at the expense of Brisbane in Michael Valkanis' first competitive fixture since replacing Roar boss Ruben Zadkovich last week. It was a pleasing performance in the eyes of Nix head coach Giancarlo Italiano, who oversaw a historic run to the 2023-24 A-League semifinals before a challenging campaign this term. "I was really happy because it felt like we went back to things that worked for us for a long period," Italiano said as the Phoenix joined the Perth Glory in the round of 32 after playoff wins. Italiano made four changes to the side that started the disappointing 2-0 final round defeat to Perth Glory with Matthew Sheridan, Paulo Retre, Nathan Walker and Gabriel Sloane-Rodrigues replacing the injured Corban Piper and Isaac Hughes, and Luke Brooke-Smith and Kazuki Nagasawa, who were named among the substitutes. Back-up goalkeeper Dublin Boon, young centre back Jayden Smith and reserves forward Dan Makowem were also promoted to the bench. The Phoenix should have taken the lead from the penalty spot in the 11th minute when keeper Josh Oluwayemi brought down Roar winger Henry Hore in the Wellington box, but Jay O'Shea blasted his spot kick against the crossbar. The Nix took the lead with Sloane-Rodrigues starting and finishing a Wellington attack. He made a mazy run in field from the left flank and found Brooke-Smith, an early entrant to the game for the injured Walker. Brooke-Smith returned the ball to Sloane-Rodrigues, who delivered a first-time cross-come-shot, and Barbarouses made sure of it by heading into an open net. It took the Roar 20 minutes after halftime to register their next shot on target with Oluwayemi making a good save to push a powerful O'Shea shot around his right-hand post. He made an even better stop 10 minutes later to deny Brisbane substitute Ben Halloran one-on-one after the Nix coughed up possession deep inside their own half. The Phoenix went down to 10 men in the 89th minute when Alex Rufer received a second yellow card for a foul on his opposite O'Shea. Wellington players will part ways before reassembling for the start of preseason training in July. — A-Leagues/Phoenix
