End of season 'disaster' for Gateshead
Gateshead won just five of 22 league games in 2025 [Getty Images] Gateshead manager Carl Magnay says their second half of the season has been a "disaster" after they missed out on a spot in the National League play-offs. They finished one place outside the top seven after only drawing 0-0 at home to Southend United on the final day of the season and collected just eight points from their last 12 games. "The back end of the season has been a disaster," Magnay told BBC Radio Newcastle. "There is no way of dressing that up. We have to take that criticism." Heading into 2025, Gateshead were only two points off the top of the National League, but Magnay was unable to maintain the good start after replacing Rob Elliot, who left to take over at League One Crawley Town in October. Elliot had led the Tyneside club to FA Trophy success last season and a sixth-place finish in the league. "Holistically, eighth is a decent finish for a club like this with one of the lowest budgets in the league," Magnay added. "However, we know we could have achieved so much more."
