Lightning strike sets Clearwater home on fire

CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) — A frightening thought as hurricane season begins, a Clearwater home was set on fire after being struck by lightning early Saturday morning. Residents were able to evacuate safely, and no injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported. Clearwater Fire & Rescue spokesman Rob Shaw said an initial investigation showed lightning strikes to the back deck of the home were likely the cause of the fire. Around two dozen rescue units were on scene and were able to control the fire quickly, preventing it from spreading to other areas of the home. According to an analysis done by Statista, Florida sees more lightning strikes than almost every other state in the U.S., topped only by Texas. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Distressing 'mayday' audio of Clearwater ferry boat crash released by Florida Coast Guard

Distressing new audio has revealed the moment a Clearwater ferry boat crashed in Florida, leaving one dead and at least a dozen injured, some of them seriously. 'Mayday, mayday, mayday, there's been a boat collision! The Clearwater ferry, underneath the Clearwater Memorial Causeway. The Clearwater ferry is adrift,' the controller was heard shouting as the two vessels collided. Officials, who called it a 'mass casualty' accident, said a private boat struck the ferry near the Memorial Causeway bridge on Sunday night before speeding away from the scene. The Clearwater Ferry was shuttling festivalgoers to and from the final night of the 17-day Sugar Sand Festival when it was hit by a private boat carrying six people. The 37-foot private boat and the driver were found three hours after it fled the scene, police said. The US Coast Guard said that on-scene reports indicated that all 45 people on the ferry and all six people on the boat were accounted for. All of those injured were aboard the ferry, according to Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). The person who died has not been identified. On Monday morning, the Coast Guard said a total of 12 people were taken to a local hospital. The Clearwater Ferry (pictured after the crash) was shuttling festival goers to and from the final night of the 17-day Sugar Sand Festival when it was hit by a private boat carrying six people No one was detained and alcohol did not play a role in the crash, an officer with the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission said Monday afternoon. All of the identified victims were adults, though there were some children on the vessel as well, they added. Many people suffered broken bones and head injuries, among others, police said. The horror crash caused 'quite a chaotic scene,' Clearwater Fire and Rescue public information officer Rob Shaw told WFLA. 'It was quite a chaotic scene when we got here. There were some patients being picked up by neighboring boats,' he recalled. 'Good Samaritans were trying to help, there were other patients who were walking ashore because some of the shallow waters here off the bridge, so they were able to. Those who could were able to walk ashore and get medical help.' Following the terrifying incident, Clearwater Ferry issued a statement, saying how 'heartbroken' the company was to hear of the fatal collision. 'We are heartbroken for the person who lost their life, everyone who was hurt, and their families,' the company said. 'We deeply appreciate the dedication of the first responders and others who rushed to help Sunday night. We are cooperating with the investigation. Safety is the top priority for PSTA and the Clearwater Ferry.' A distressed-looking pregnant woman who was aboard the ferry said she could not feel her baby moving as she headed to the hospital. Brenda Alvarez, who is 31 weeks pregnant, was on the ferry with her husband and two kids in Clearwater that night. 'We are actually going to go to the hospital right now to get checked because I'm a little worried I haven't felt the baby move,' she told ABC Action News. 'It's very scary.' Alvarez fell between two seats when the collision occurred. She said the impact caused her 'whole body to hurt.' 'We just wanted to get to our cars and get home. We never, you never expect anything to happen,' she added. She went on to say that it's hard to truly comprehend 'how fast [the other boat] was going, how that was even logically possible. 'It's horrible. It shattered, it shattered the whole back of the boat, left a huge dent,' she said. But Alvarez praised first responders who bravely rushed in to assist her children off the ferry. Both vessels are currently being secured as evidence, FWC officials said. They are also canvassing the area and going through all the 911 calls made at the time of the crash.

At Least One Killed and Multiple Injured in 'Mass Casualty' Event in Florida after Boat Hits Ferry and Flees Near Clearwater Bridge

One person was killed and several others were injured on Sunday when a boat collided with a ferry near the Memorial Causeway Bridge and then fled the scene, officials said. The Clearwater Police Department announced on X that multiple people were injured. The Clearwater Fire & Rescue Department quickly declared the crash as "a mass casualty incident" due of the high number of injuries, as rescue workers were seen working through the night to pull people ashore. The Clearwater Ferry was carrying festival attendees to and from the closing night of the 17-day Sugar Sand Festival when it was hit by a private boat with six people on board. Tragedy Could Have Been Bigger Everyone who was injured had been on the ferry, which was carrying 43 passengers and two crew members. The boat fled the scene immediately after hitting the ferry, while the ferry was forced to stop on a sandbar near the Memorial Causeway Bridge. Dramatic photos reveal the extent of the damage to the small ferry, showing sections of the roof completely torn off and plastic chairs crushed from the force of the crash. Other photos show passengers being taken to safety onshore, with brave first responders standing on the sandbar as they evaluated the situation. In total, six passengers were classified as "trauma patients" and transported to various hospitals across the state. Two of them had to be airlifted by medical helicopters that arrived to help at the scene. The rest of the passengers were treated by crews from 10 ambulances and emergency vehicles that responded to the initial call, racing to the scene with sirens wailing and lights flashing as information about the disaster slowly emerged. Night of Chaos Late Sunday night, the Clearwater Police Department released a statement advising drivers to steer clear of Memorial Causeway as emergency teams transported patients to different hospitals. "We're working a boat crash off the Memorial Causeway bridge that has resulted in multiple injuries," police said in the statement. "It's been declared a mass casualty incident by the fire department due to the number of injuries. All local hospitals have been notified. Multiple trauma alerts have been called, with helicopters transporting two of the more seriously injured". Police also revealed that the boat that hit the ferry and fled the scene was later located with six people on board, none of whom were injured in the incident. "We believe that the boat responsible for hitting the ferry left the scene immediately, and we believe that our law enforcement partners may have that boat," Clearwater Police spokesperson Rob Shaw said. Police said that by around 10:30 p.m., emergency crews had evacuated all passengers and patients from the ferry and confirmed that everyone was accounted for. The investigation into the crash will be led by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Mass casualty in deadly ferry crash leaves at least one dead in Florida

At least one person is dead and a dozen more injured as chilling pictures emerge of the ferry that was damaged in a collision with a private boat. The U.S. Coast Guard and police described the incident on Sunday as a 'mass casualty event' as they worked through the night to pull people ashore. The Clearwater Ferry was shuttling festivalgoers to and from the final night of the 17-day Sugar Sand Festival when it was hit by a private boat carrying six people. That boat swiftly fled the scene as the ferry - carrying 43 passengers and two crew - was forced to come to a rest on a sandbar near the Memorial Causeway bridge. Photos show the extent of the damage to the small ferry, with parts of the roof torn down and plastic chairs shattered from the impact of the collision. Other pictures captured the moment passengers were led to safety on shore with first responders standing on the sandbank as they assessed the ferry. In all, six passengers were described as 'trauma patients' and rushed to various hospitals around the state. Two of them had to be airlifted to hospital in the medical helicopters which arrived to assist. The remaining passengers were assessed and treated by ten ambulance and emergency service vehicles which responded to the initial call. Clearwater Police Department issued a statement on Sunday night urging motorists to avoid Memorial Causeway as they rushed patients to various hospitals. Police said: 'We're working a boat crash off the Memorial Causeway bridge that has resulted in multiple injuries. 'It's been declared a mass casualty incident by the fire department due to the number of injuries. All local hospitals have been notified. 'Multiple trauma alerts have been called with helicopters transporting two of the more seriously injured.' Police also revealed the 'boat that struck the ferry fled the scene' after the crash. It was later located with six passengers on board - none of whom were injured. 'We believe that the boat responsible for hitting the ferry left the scene immediately, and we believe that our law enforcement partners may have that boat,' Clearwater Police spokesperson Rob Shaw said. Several pictures appear to reveal the moment the suspected driver of the boat was escorted from the Belleair Boat Ramp south of the crash site with an investigator. One of the ferry passengers, Marco Vacheco, told 10 Tampa Bay that they were 'hit from behind'. He said: 'It was like a big yacht, it hit from behind, like it came through where the captain sits, like he was pinned down.' His pregnant wife Brenda Alvarez told ABC Action News she 'hasn't felt the baby move' since the crash and was about to head to the hospital to get checked out. 'I'm a little worried I haven't felt the baby move. It's very scary.' Alvarez, who was on board with her husband and their two children, fell between two seats as the collision occurred. She said the impact caused her 'whole body to hurt'. 'We just wanted to get to our cars and get home. We never, you never expect anything to happen.' She went on to say that it's hard to truly comprehend 'how fast [the other boat] was going, how that was even logically possible. She said: 'It's horrible. It shattered, it shattered the whole back of the boat, left a huge dent.' But Alvarez praised first responders who bravely rushed in to assist her children off the ferry. She said: 'Where we were, it was really shallow, so there was actually some paramedics that went out there and helped my children and I get off the boat.' It's understood as many as 12 patients were rushed to various hospitals, with more still evaluated on the scene. All of the injured patients were on board the ferry at the time of the crash. 'I don't even know how many ambulances are there. Every minute there's more and more. This is awful.' Police said emergency crews had removed every passenger and patient from the ferry by about 10.30pm and had accounted for everyone. The U.S. Coast Guard and Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will lead an investigation into the crash.
