How many cannabis dispensaries are there in the Lower Hudson Valley? See our map

The marijuana industry continues to grow across the country— and since New York legalized the sale and consumption of cannabis in 2021 for adults, hundreds of legal dispensaries have opened across the Empire State. The arrival of the village of Haverstraw's first legal dispensary, 202 Cannabis Co., in early May, brings Westchester and Rockland's number of legal pot shops up to 19. Read on to learn more about the Lower Hudson Valley's marijuana shops, and where to find them. The first licenses were given to 32 dispensaries in 2022 through the Conditional Adult Use Retail Dispensary program, which granted priority licenses to business owners directly impacted by prior marijuana convictions, or nonprofits with a history of helping incarcerated people. However, the CAURD program met some push back in August 2023, when a state judge blocked new licenses from being granted after a group of service-disabled veterans claimed that state regulators "unconstitutionally awarded initial dispensary licenses to businesses impacted by prior marijuana convictions." This ruling paused licenses from being granted and dispensaries from being open until October 2023. See our map below to find where dispensaries are located in Westchester and Rockland counties. Lohud.com will post school election results as they come in on Tuesday, May 20

School district elections take place Tuesday, May 20, and will post results as we get them for districts in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties. Polling hours vary but most districts close polls by 9 or 9:30 p.m. Look for lohud to start posting results shortly after 9:30 p.m. for small districts, although it usually takes several hours for some districts to release results. Registered voters will be asked to approve school board proposals for 2025-26 and choose school board candidates. Some districts will also ask voters to weigh in on a variety of propositions that have to do with spending public money. In some districts, library budgets and trustees are also on the ballot. Turnout is usually quite low for school elections, which take place each year in May. Three districts — Mamaroneck, New Rochelle and Pearl River — are proposing to raise their property tax levies by more than allowed under their state-imposed tax caps, meaning they will need the support of more than 60% of voters. Of the 53 voting districts in the Lower Hudson Valley, 28 are proposing to increase their tax levy as much as allowed under their tax caps. The Yonkers Public Schools, as one of New York's "Big 5" school systems, does not have a public vote on its budget. Districts where budget plans are defeated can propose second budget plans for public votes on June 17. Last year, voters rejected initial budget plans in Chappaqua and East Ramapo. Chappaqua was among four districts in the Lower Hudson Valley that proposed breaking their tax caps, but voters approved a second, revised budget plan that stayed under the district's tax cap. East Ramapo voters approved a second budget plan that included a 1% tax levy increase. But state Education Commissioner Betty Rosa, in a rare move, ordered the district to raise this year's tax levy by an additional 4.38%, an action that continues to divide the community. Mustangs score four in third period to defeat Rockland

Article content Melfort Mustangs have upped its game at the Centennial Cup, defeating the Rockland Nationals of the Central Canada Hockey League to improve to 2-1 in the tournament. In the process, Melfort has boosted its intimidation factor in a tournament featuring the best junior A teams in the country. Article content While the Mustangs ended up beating the Nationals by a convincing 5-2 score, the convincing came late in the game. There was no scoring in the first period, nor an overwhelming number of shots on goal, with Melfort putting the punk on the net eight times compared to five by Rockland. Article content Article content But the Nationals scored the games first goal, coming at 12:30 of the second period. Melfort tied the game just over two minutes later with a goal from Will Munro. The Ontario club kept the pressure on the Mustangs goaltender throughout the second, with 13 shots on net compared to Melfort's nine. Article content Article content The third period started out as a nail-biter. The game was tied 1-1 until Melfort's Nolan Roberts scored at 5:49. Tristan Ziola made it 3-1 at the 13:00 mark, but any sense of relief was soon snatched away by the Nationals Anthony Hall, who brought his team within one goal at 14:55. Article content With about a minute-and-a-half left in the game, and Melfort clinging to a 3-2 lead, Rockland pulled its goalie. But the strategy was not rewarded. Melfort's Brayden Westerlund scored on the empty net at 18:52. Rockland left the net empty until 19:32, when Melfort scored a fourth goal in the period, another empty netter, this one from Ashton Hutchinson. Article content The game ended 5-2. Melfort outshot Rockland 27-25. The teams each had three power plays and 10 penalty minutes. Article content
