Insurer rejects claim citing break in policy renewal, consumer forum says ‘unjustified'
Ghaziabad: The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (DCDRC) in Ghaziabad has directed Star Health and Allied Insurance Company Limited to pay Rs 2.1 lakh to a Bulandshahr resident after rejecting his insurance claim on what the forum called "unjustified grounds". In its order dated July 15, the commission, headed by Praveen Kumar Jain, ruled that the Chennai-headquartered insurer must pay the amount via its Ghaziabad office within 45 days. Failing to do so would attract an interest of 6% per annum until the claim is settled. The forum also imposed Rs 5,000 as litigation costs and compensation for mental harassment caused to the consumer. Prasad said he purchased a Family Health Optima insurance policy in 2018 that covered him, his wife Sarla Devi, and son Akshay Tomar. The Rs 5.5 lakh family floater policy, purchased from the insurer's Ghaziabad branch, had been renewed each year without fail, he said. Learn More He spent around Rs 1.9 lakh at the first, empanelled hospital and Rs 50,000 at the second. However, Star Health rejected his claim, citing a "break in policy renewal". Prasad challenged the insurer's stand, stating that he never allowed the policy to lapse and had renewed it well in time. When served notice, the company initially failed to respond, prompting the commission to initiate ex-parte proceedings. Later, the insurer argued that the claim was rightly rejected as Prasad renewed the policy when he was already unwell. After reviewing the case, the commission concluded that this was not a valid reason to deny the claim. "The complainant was admitted on Jan 5, and even if he fell ill on Jan 3—the date of policy renewal—the policy was in force on the date of admission," the commission observed. Since both hospital stays fell within the policy's validity period, the commission held the insurer responsible for inadequate service and ordered it to settle the full claim.

Gujarat govt approves five-year action plan for AI implementation
Gandhinagar: The state govt said on Sunday that it approved an action plan for the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI). Over the next five years, the govt aims to position the state as a leader in AI-enabled governance. The action plan, which will serve as a time-bound blueprint to equip the state govt with advanced AI capabilities, will be based on six key aspects: data, digital infrastructure, capacity building, research and development, startup facilitation and 'safe and trusted AI', the govt said. Over the next five years, the govt aims to train over 2.5 lakh individuals, including students, MSMEs and govt employees in AI, machine learning (ML) and related domains. At the annual Chintan Shibir in Somnath in Nov 2024, the CM said that Gujarat will leverage AI across its administrative framework and departments to lead in technology-driven governance and socio-economic progress. Subsequently, a 10-member task force was set up with members from key departments such as healthcare, education, agriculture, fintech and other sectors. Alertness of residents helped nab Govindachamy
Kozhikode: It was the alertness and swift thinking shown by residents on hearing the news of rape- murder case convict Govindachamy escaping from Kannur Central Prison, which helped police nab him within hours around 3.5km away from the jail. The first to spot the fugitive was Vinoj, a local man on his way to work at Thalap around 9.15am. "I was riding my two-wheeler when I noticed a man walking slowly on the left side of the road. He looked like a beggar, and we exchanged glances briefly. I had already heard about Govindachamy's escape from prison, and something about the man I saw made me suspicious," Vinoj said. He noted that the man was carrying what looked like waste cloth on his head, and oddly, his left hand was concealed inside the bundle, further raising suspicion. "I told a nearby autorickshaw driver that I suspected the man to be Govindachamy. He got on my scooter, and we began to follow him. When I called out his name, he immediately bolted into a narrow lane and jumped over the compound wall of an under-construction building," Vinoj added. Wasting no time, Vinoj informed Kannur Town police station. Within minutes, a police team arrived and launched a coordinated search operation, sealing off the area to prevent Govindachamy from slipping away. A female worker, who was clearing the undergrowth, also saw him flee into the thicket. Sometime later, it was Unnikrishnan a staff member of National Sample Survey Office at Thalap, who spotted Govindachamy hiding inside the well near the office. "After hearing that he had been seen nearby, I searched the office premises in the morning but found nothing. Later, I returned and opened the door to the well. As I looked inside, I saw him standing on the inner ledge, clutching a rope. I think he had submerged himself in water on hearing me approach and came up just after," Unnikrishnan said. He said that on seeing him, Govindachamy threatened him with death if he raised an alarm. Police and residents rushed to the spot, and successfully caught him from the well.
