The Belgian side rode their luck and had goalkeeper Simon Mignolet to thank before a goal midway through the second half gave them a huge advantage going into the second leg. The Light Blues withstood some heavy pressure from the Greeks and had to call upon the best of Jack Butland to keep them in the match. But then up stepped Findlay Curtis and Djeidi Gassama in the second half to give them a 2-0 lead that ultimately proved pivotal in their quest to reach the third qualifying round. Russell Martin's Gers swept Viktoria Plzen aside by three goals to nil last night and have one foot in the play-off round already. They have been drawn to face either Brugge or Red Bull Salzburg at that stage and after tonight's game between those sides, it's the Belgian giants who are in pole position. Brugge, runners-up in last season's Belgian Pro League, won 1-0 in Salzburg thanks to a 74th minute strike from Romeo Vermant. The striker nipped in front of his marker to steer home a teasing cross from Bjorn Meijer and with the return leg back at their home ground, they will fancy their chances of progression. Former Sunderland keeper Mignolet made some fine stops early on but his highlight moment came in the 82nd minute when he made a superb double-save to deny Petar Ratkov and then Dorgeles Nene. If Gers finish the job against Plzen, they will be at home in the first leg of the play-off, which is scheduled for August 19. Rangers boss Russell Martin's big Tavernier and Raskin calls vs Plzen as he opens up on John Souttar contract Brugge edged the possession stats and played more passes but it was Salzburg who created more chances, with 20 shots in total. Earlier on, Chelsea-bound wonderkid Dastan Satpayev smashed in a nerveless 90th minute penalty against Slovan Bratislava to leave Celtic staring at a gruelling visit to take on Kairat Almaty in the play-offs. Celta Vigo closer to a deal with Club Brugge for former Barcelona striker

Sacha Tavolieri has revealed that Celta Vigo are getting close to a deal with Club Brugge for the signing of striker Ferran Jutgla. The former Barcelona striker is expected to leave Belgium this season and a move to La Liga and Celta Vigo looks the most likely. According to Tavolieri, the clubs are still not in full agreement but the Spanish club are getting closer to what Club Brugge are looking for. The 26-year-old striker scored 14 goals in 54 games for the side this season, just one shy of his 15 goal best season for the club during the 2022/2023 campaign. Jutgla joined Club Brugge from Barcelona that season, where he had played nine games for the Catalan giants, scoring twice. Jutgla looks set to leave the side with 40 goals in 148 games, which includes a handful during successful Champions League campaigns. For Club, their striker situation appears more settled now with the recent contract renewal for young star Romeo Vermant. GBeNeFN | Ben Jackson

Moroccan Star Chemsdine Talbi shines in Brugge's Belgian Cup triumph

Club Brugge secured its 12th Belgian Cup title on Sunday with a 2-1 victory over Anderlecht, thanks to a brace from Romeo Vermant (40th, 61st minute). Despite a late goal from Luis Vázquez (90+1), the Brussels side fell short once again, marking their third loss in a Belgian Cup final after previous defeats in 2015 and 2022. Amid the celebrations, one face stood out: Chemsdine Talbi. The Moroccan international of Belgian origin celebrated the win with emotion, as shown in a heartfelt post on his Instagram account. Talbi's season, however, has been marked by ups and downs—particularly following his decision to represent Morocco at the international level. Despite a strong start, his playing time has significantly decreased, raising questions about his future at the Flemish club. According to Africafoot, several European and Gulf clubs have expressed interest in Talbi. Napoli, RB Leipzig, and Eintracht Frankfurt, as well as Saudi clubs Al-Hilal and Al-Qadisiyah, are reportedly eyeing the 21-year-old ahead of the summer transfer window. Club Brugge is said to have set his price at €30 million.

Soccer-Vermant's double hands Belgian Cup success to Club Brugge

BRUSSELS (Reuters) -Striker Romeo Vermant scored two goals as Club Brugge edged Anderlecht 2-1 on Sunday to win the Belgian Cup for a record-extending 12th time. The 21-year-old struck on either side of the halftime break to keep up Club's hopes of a league and cup double as they also chase success in the championship. Hugo Siquet's 40th minute cross from the right wing went across the face of the Anderlecht goal to the back post where Vermant held off defender Ali Maamar to open the scoring. His second followed in the 61st minute as he was quickest to Christos Tzolis' cross to the near post, expertly steering home with a touch off his toes. Anderlecht, who have dropped out of the league title race, were hoping for a 10th cup success, having last won in 2008. They pulled one back in stoppage time through Luis Vazquez after Samuel Edozie, on loan from Southampton, had stolen away possession and burst through several defenders before laying the ball back for an easy finish. Brugge's last cup win was 10 years ago when they also beat Anderlecht 2-1 in the final. The contest at the King Baudouin Stadium started five minutes late because of fireworks let off by spectators while supporters clashed in Brussels' city centre in the build-up to the match. Media reports said an Anderlecht fan was taken to hospital in a serious condition after a firework exploded in his incident happened away from the match venue as Anderlecht fans prepared to walk to the stadium.
