Sheffield runner completes iconic Washie 100-miler

Sheffield's Wayne Simmons was one of just 89 runners to finish the legendary Washie 100 Miler super ultra-marathon in the Eastern Cape last weekend (July 12-13). The 47th edition of the race saw 107 athletes, including 64 novices, set off from Cathcart Country Club at 5pm on Friday. By 7pm on Saturday, 89 runners had completed the gruelling 161.4km route to the Buffalo Road Runners Club in East London, all within the strict 26-hour time limit. Simmons (39) was the North Coast's sole entrant, finishing 37th overall in a time of 22:36:42. He completed the race on just 35 minutes of sleep over a 35-hour period. 'It is the most brutal thing I have ever done, harder than the Comrades and Ironman,' said Simmons. A veteran of 11 Comrades Marathons (90km) and two full Ironman (226.3km) triathlons, Simmons described the Washie as a long-time dream fulfilled. Founded in 1977 by East London runners seeking a challenge longer than the Comrades, the race follows World Athletics and Athletics South Africa rules. While no formal qualification is required, entrants must be at least 20 years old. Simmons said the toughest part of the race was between 11pm and 5am, running in freezing darkness with only his headlamp's 'light bubble' to guide him through the winding hills of the rural Eastern Cape. 'It was seven degrees (Celsius), and I began falling asleep, so I stopped for a quick nap in the car before setting off again with a half-hour walk to get back in the zone.' Representing Westville Athletics Club, Simmons credited his support team – wife Romy, mother Gayle and her partner Brandon Jackson – for getting him through the challenge. 'It was a team effort. I couldn't have done it without them. They were all machines, driving, running and walking every step of the way with me.' Romy described the event as both gruelling and unforgettable: 'It takes an enormous amount of courage, grit and determination to complete a race like that. It was a privilege to witness him achieve this personal goal,' she said. Event manager Sian O'Keeffe added: 'Conquering this distance is tough; the mental strength needed is immense.' Yet it bears repeating that this electronica-suffused, trance-heavy new project sees the singer boldly taking herself into new territory.' - Billboard 'An eleven strong homage to an unforgettable era, but it's Romy's autobiographical candour that adds a depth beyond the record's inarguable ecstasy' - DIY Magazine 'Romy Madley Croft emerges boldly and brightly, female pronouns everywhere, full tilt into piano driven house music in all its euphoric, bittersweet glory' - MOJO Just under two years on from the release of her highly-acclaimed debut solo album, London-based dance pop icon Romy releases the Mid Air Transcendence Remixes EP, a bold collection of personally-curated remixes of songs from Mid Air, reimagined for new spaces and states of mind. L.A. is home to two of the most beautiful outdoor cinemas in the world, per ranking

Out of all of the beautiful places to catch an outdoor movie on this planet of ours, two are located in Los Angeles—or so says, uh, us. Yes, Time Out editors have recently ranked the best outdoor cinemas in the world, spanning Cannes to Cape Town to Cumbria to, yes, California. And in a movie-loving town like Los Angeles, few things bring Angelenos more joy than cozying up with fellow film lovers for a fun movie under the stars. But it certainly helps when that outdoor movie is enjoyed in a setting as sumptuous as what's onscreen. Out of 30 of the world's most stunning alfresco cinemas on Time Out's list, Los Angeles is home to two, and one cracked the top five worldwide. Coming in fourth place is Cinespia, a local favorite that hosts dazzling screenings around town at Rose Bowl Stadium, the Greek Theatre, Los Angeles State Historic Park and, arguably most stunning of them all, the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Now, hanging out in a cemetery to watch Romy and Michele's High School Reunion might initially seem strange but set on the large Fairbanks Lawn and projected directly onto a mausoleum, it proves to be a truly picturesque spot to, well, catch a picture. Every summer, Cinespia shows classic movie favorites in the same resting places of hundreds of Hollywood stars and musicians including Judy Garland, Jayne Mansfield, Johnny Ramone, Bugsy Siegel, and Rudolph Valentino. Bring a picnic, including your favorite wine, or purchase food onsite before setting up camp with blankets, pillows, and low chairs. Stay for the live DJ set after the movie, a perfect wind-up experience inside this cemetery founded in 1899 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In the 23rd spot on Time Out's list sits Los Angeles' Rooftop Cinema Club, a flawless place to snap 'ussies' with your partner in front of the L.A. skyline before the movie starts. See cult classics as well as new releases at this outdoor venue that got its start in London and has evolved globally to rooftop locations all across the US. There's a bar and lounge, plenty of noshes and nibbles, and wireless headphones that deliver the best high-tech sound. You'll just have to choose between an Adirondack chair or loveseat.

‘Romy and Michele,' and their Post-its, heading to off-Broadway

NEW YORK — A musical take on 'Romy and Michele's High School Reunion' is hitting off-Broadway this fall. 'Romy & Michele: The Musical' will open Oct. 28 at Stage 42, with previews starting two weeks prior, reports. Tickets will be available later this month. Robin Schiff, who penned the 1997 film — starring Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow as Romy and Michele, respectively — wrote the show, which made its debut at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre in 2017. Kristin Hanggi, who directed that production and Broadway's 'Rock of Ages,' will helm the upcoming 'feel-good joyride,' whose ''80s and '90s pop-inspired score' comes from Gwendolyn Sanford and Brandon Jay. Much like its big screen predecessor, the stage production centers on two ditzy friends who plan a comeback at their 10-year high school reunion, fueled by lies about their role in the origin of Post-its, while wearing dresses that look like they may have been stolen from 'Austin Powers' Fembots. 'Romy and Michele have been icons of friendship, fashion, and individuality from the moment we first met them,' Barry Kemp and Stephen Soucy, who are producing alongside Peter Schneider and Laurence Mark, said in a statement to Playbill. 'Bringing their story to the New York Stage is the perfect home for their bold and quirky spirit to be reborn. We can't wait for audiences to enjoy this hilarious and heart-filled new musical.' The news follows another major development The Hollywood Reporter broke in the cult classic's legacy. As of late January, Sorvino and Kudrow were both in negotiations to reprise their roles for in a long-awaited sequel. The follow-up was expected to start filming in June and would be directed by 'High School Musical: The Musical: The Series' creator Tim Federle.
