Hansi Flick & Deco disagree on Barcelona star's future

A 'deep internal debate' was noted behind the scenes at La Liga giants Barcelona over recent weeks, regarding the future of a member of the club's defensive ranks. That's according to Diario AS, who point towards Andreas Christensen as having been at the centre of the discussions. Advertisement Stopper Christensen is for his part of course fresh off an altogether underwhelming campaign in Catalunya's capital. Owing to a pair of long-term injury problems, the Dane was restricted to just six total appearances across all competitions. And yet, if the latest word stemming from the media is anything to go by, Hansi Flick remained happy to continue countung on Christensen as part of his squad for next season. As per AS: 'Hansi Flick was satisfied with the Dane and was banking on his continued presence, considering that an injury left him practically unused last season.' Advertisement The problem for Flick, however, is that Deco and the club's board are in complete disagreement. Christensen will not be offered an extension to his contract at the Camp Nou, which is due to expire in the summer of 2026. To ensure that the former Chelsea man does not depart for free, Barca have therefore been left with little choice but to seek out a sale over the weeks and months ahead. As much has given rise to spirited debate behind the scenes in Catalunya, albeit with Deco set to win out in placing his full faith in the talents of Ronald Araújo. Conor Laird – GSFN

FC Barcelona Makes Araujo Sale Decision, Reports Mundo Deportivo

FC Barcelona has made a decision on whether to sell its center back Ronald Araujo according to Mundo ... More Deportivo, which cited anonymous sources. FC Barcelona has made a decision on whether to sell its center back Ronald Araujo according to Mundo Deportivo, which cited anonymous sources. The Uruguayan made his Barca debut in 2019, receiving a red card just 14 minutes after coming on against Sevilla, but then improved to become regarded as one of the best defenders in the world across the coming years. The turn of 2024 saw him linked with a potential move to Bayern Munich, however, while early 2025 was full of of rumors that the 26-year-old would join Juventus because of talks over a new contract breaking down. They were thankfully ironed out with Araujo extending his terms in Catalonia until 2031, but while last season ended with Barca celebrating a domestic treble under Hansi Flick, it wasn't all good times and parties for the stalwart. In his injured absence following a knock picked up at the Copa America, Araujo lost his place on the back line to Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez and was blamed for his role in goals scored by Inter Milan which knocked Barca out of the Champions League semifinal second leg at the San Siro. Many also point the finger at Araujo for his red card in the UCL in 2023/2024 against Paris Saint-Germain playing its part in Barca losing a quarterfinal tie to Luis Enrique in Montjuic, and would like to see the Blaugrana cash in on him by putting him on the market and selling the number 4 to the highest bidder. According to Mundo Deportivo, however, Barca president Joan Laporta and Deco won't do that because they view Araujo as the 'the center back with the most defensive power of all and the fastest in the world in high intensity'. Ultimately, however, it might not be FC Barcelona that decides whether Araujo sticks around. As we previously saw with Ousmane Dembele, who eventually walked to PSG, his fresh contract included a release clause which drops to €60 million from July 1 to 15 meaning any club that puts that amount on the table will have the right to negotiate with Araujo.

Frenkie de Jong at risk of Barcelona summer exit

Barcelona need to sell this summer in order to bring in their desired signings, and there is chance for a major departure. Ronald Araujo could go, as could Frenkie de Jong – despite the fact that he has appeared destined to remain in Catalonia for at least one more season. De Jong is out of contract in 2026, and as such, Barcelona have made moves to agree a new deal to ensure that he cannot leave for free at the end of the season. But despite previous optimism, things are not looking so clear now. Frenkie de Jong contract situation has stagnated As reported by Relevo, there has been no movement on de Jong's contract situation of late. And as a result, there are now more chances for him to leave Barcelona during the summer transfer window. Image via EFE Barcelona are not actively looking to sell de Jong, but they are open to a deal if it is favourable in a financial sense. And there is chances for this to happen, with the report noting that there are several clubs keeping tabs on the situation. Barcelona prepared to overrule Hansi Flick with possible sale Things with de Jong had looked promising due to his resurgence in 2025, with him having established himself as a regular starter again. Hansi Flick has been delighted with the Netherlands international, but despite the fact that he would not welcome a sale, Barcelona are prepared to overrule their manager if a good offer arrives. It will be very interesting to see how things play out with de Jong over the summer. If he does not sign a new contract in the next couple of months, the chances of him leaving on a free in 2026 would increase significantly. And this possibility is one that would be a disaster for the La Liga champions.

Barcelona will capture elusive Champions League, Araujo says

May 17 (Reuters) - Defender Ronald Araujo is confident Barcelona, who clinched a domestic treble by winning the LaLiga, Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup this season, have what it takes to capture the Champions League, a title that has eluded the club for a decade. Thousands joined Barcelona's victory parade from Camp Nou to Arc de Triomf on Friday, a day after the Catalan side secured their 28th Spanish top-flight title with a 2-0 win at local rivals Espanyol. "Very happy, we deserve it. The team and the people deserve it. Nobody was betting on us at the beginning of the season and we have won three titles," Uruguay's Araujo told Barca One during the open-bus parade. "People are excited about this team because there is good raw material. We missed the Champions League, but we will get it." Barcelona, who were eliminated from the Champions League semi-finals by Inter Milan this month, last won the top European club competition in 2015.
