West Lothian mum raises money for 2-year-old daughter with rare and serious condition

The devoted mother of a West Lothian toddler has said she is prepared to 'sleep in the car' if she can't afford accommodation while her daughter is undergoing life-changing surgery. Denni-Leigh Shanks' two-year-old daughter Dakota was born with a rare condition which saw her bladder develop on the outside of her body. After a year on a waiting list, Dakota is now set to have the vital surgery in Manchester on June 23 - a procedure which could see her need to stay in hospital for up to eight weeks - but Denni-Leigh has been forced to reach out for help to pay her own accommodation costs. The Livingston mum said launching a GoFundMe page was 'the last thing' she thought she would do, but that she needs to 'scramble' funds together in just a few weeks to secure accommodation down south. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Speaking to the Evening News, Denni-Leigh said: 'We always knew Dakota would need an operation at some point but doctors said they wouldn't be able to do it straight away because there were too many risks. When she was born they said it should happen within 12 months but it got delayed and then last month I was given a date for the operation in June – it was very out of the blue. 'We need to travel to Manchester a week before her operation for daily pre-op appointments and I'll need to cover hotels, food, fuel - everything to get up and down there. We have to fund everything until Dakota is admitted to hospital. West Lothian mum, Denni-Leigh, with travel with her daughter Dakota to Manchester for life-changing surgery later in the month | Submitted 'We've been told she could be in hospital for four to eight weeks, but it just all depends on how Dakota heals after the surgery. I'm hoping to get accommodation through the Ronald McDonald charity for that period, but it's an unknown at the moment because I can't apply for it until Dakota is admitted to hospital, and then it will just depend on if there are spaces available, there could still potentially be a wait time. 'But the main thing is that Dakota has a safe place to stay for that first week. Everything I do, I do for Dakota. So, if for any reason I can't get into the Ronald McDonald accommodation and I don't have the funds to stay anywhere else then I'll probably just sleep in the car if I have to.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Denni-Leigh was told last year that the operation was due in early 2025 and saved up money for the trip. But unexpected costs including having to buy a new washing machine meant she had to use up some of her savings. And the family was also dealt a heartbreaking blow just a few weeks ago when Dakota's dad Kris Braithwaite, who was helping Denni-Leigh with travel and hotel costs, died suddenly. Denni-Leigh said: 'Kris was always there for his daughter and he would have helped in any way he could. 'Dakota is really struggling with it. She's only two so she doesn't really understand, but she makes a lot of comments about wanting her daddy back and makes a lot of comments about being sad and has struggled with her sleep since it happened.' Please help my baby girl.' You can support Denni-Leigh and Dakota by visiting the gofundme website.

The First Barbie, Shrek's Old Test Footage, And 69 More ~Original~ Versions That Blew My Mind

1. Here's what the McDonald's arches and logo used to look like. Oh, and did you know there was a mascot before Ronald McDonald? His name was Speedee! 2. Ronald McDonald didn't debut until 1963. Here's what he looked like then. 3. Before Dennis the Menace, Little Miss Dairy Queen was Dairy Queen's mascot. Here's what she looked like! 4. Mr. Potato Head used to look a little different. The "potato" wasn't included – and was a real potato — and he was advertised for use on any fruit or vegetable. 5. Here's what Monopoly used to look like. This was before the design of Mr. Monopoly we all know and love today. 6. Here's what the original footage for Shrek looked like. 7. And here's an early version of the Cookie Monster that was green and had teeth. 8. Looks like Ken got some major plastic surgery over the years. 9. Here, you can see an even earlier Ken — along with Alan. 10. Here's their storage box, along with some accessories. 11. And here's the original Barbie! (You may recognize that striped bathing suit from the beginning of Barbie!) 12. Original designs for Voldemort (on the back of Quirrell's head) in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone were MUCH scarier than the one they ended up using. 13. Here's what fire extinguishers used to look like. They had salt water inside, and in later versions, fire suppressant. 14. Did you know that Return of the Jedi used to be called Revenge of the Jedi? Here's a poster from before it was changed. 15. Here's what Guess Who looks like today compared to how it used to was certainly less diverse back then. 16. Here's what Tigger used to look like. Was no one going to tell me he didn't always look like the Tigger we know and love??? 17. Here's what Trojan condoms used to look like. 18. This is what yearbooks and yearbook quotes used to look like. It's kind of a power move to call yourself a "saucy minx" in your yearbook, but I'm here for it. 19. Here's what old Valentine's cards looked like. They're low-key creeping me out. 20. Microwaves used to give the same energy as that one alarm clock everyone's dad had. Y'know, this one. 21. Here's how report cards used to look. Tag yourself, I'm "inclined to mischief." u/wtfimscreaming / Via 22. This is how much iPhone cameras have changed over the years. Soon, we'll be able to use them as microscopes or something. u/Redstone41 / Via 23. The difference between laptops over time is also wild. u/006ahmed / Via 24. It also genuinely never occurred to me that dollar bills would've once looked different. u/swingingfloob / Via 29. Here's what the $5 bill used to look like in 1950. Did you know "In God We Trust" wasn't printed on US currency until 1957? u/president_dump / Via 30. Similarly, the original Pledge of Allegiance didn't have "under God." President Eisenhower signed a law in 1954 adding the phrase to the pledge, in part due to the Cold War ideas of Communists being "godless" and Americans being morally superior. u/seditiouslizard / Via 31. TIL that phone numbers were once four digits. u/Tezcatzontecatl / Via 32. Here's what credit cards and pay stubs used to look like. The fact that credit cards were once metal and paper is also really throwing me off. u/footpickle / Via 33. And driver's licenses were, too. Weren't people worried about spilling??? u/Nocommentthx666 / Via 34. Here's what Starbucks gift cards used to look like. u/ftpgshow / Via 35. And here's what McDonald's gift cards used to look like. Here's what Nerds used to look like. They didn't have the flavors we have today, either. u/AlexStrange- / Via 38. Twix wrappers used to look pretty different, too. I just hope they still tasted the same! u/timo606 / Via 39. I kind of prefer the original Pringles can design. u/ezt93 / Via 40. Though the old Fanta logo is kind of boring. u/Legiiii / Via 41. This is what Sprite cans used to look like. u/leilalalafitz / Via 42. And this is what the original Mountain Dew looked like. u/please-dont-judege / Via 43. Here's how much cell phones have changed. I'm old enough to remember all of these, but are you? u/ScubaPuddingJr / Via 46. I'm also old enough to remember what Mac computers used to look like, but I feel that today's youth needs to be educated. u/FFGamer404 / Via 47. I kind of love how TVs used to look. u/Rogation / Via 48. Prescription pills used to come in much prettier containers. u/CharlesGravey / Via 49. McDonald's UK bringing back popular burger in menu shake-up

McDonald's has announced a new summer menu with 12 tasty new additions including a fan favourite previously dubbed the 'best burger ever '. Launching in McDonald's restaurants across the UK on Wednesday, May 7, the new menu is set to feature the Biscoff McFlurry and Frappe, a spicy burger as well as a Pokemon Happy Meals for the kids. The ultra-popular Steakhouse Stack burger will make its much-anticipated return but it will set you back a little more than before. It features two juicy 100 per cent British and Irish beef patties, with cheddar cheese, crispy onions, red onion, lettuce, and a savoury black peppercorn sauce served in a toasted sesame bun and will only be available for a limited time. Originally launched in March 2023, it's been in and out of restaurants and instantly proved a huge hit with fast food fans . The fast food giant last relaunched the much-loved Steakhouse Stack in January 2024 for £5.39, however, now fans will have to fork out £5.99 for the burger alone. After the beloved burger was added to McDonald's menu last year, it created a buzz among customers. One user took to X, formerly known as Twitter: 'Whoever Ronald McDonald employed to invent the steakhouse stack deserves the world'. Another keen foodie said: 'The steakhouse stack was the best burger they've done in a long time'. A different user went as far as claiming: 'The steakhouse stack is the best burger on the McDonald's menu and nothing will convince me otherwise '. Another unlikely McDonald's fan agreed: 'The Steakhouse Stack from Maccies may just be the best burger I've ever consumed from that cesspit of a place wow'. More took to the social media platform to express their love for the burger: 'McDonald's steakhouse that's the best burger they've ever produced'. 'Steakhouse stack did not disappoint though' and 'Ngl the McDonald's Steakhouse Stack is very good'. One even expressed: 'Petition to keep the Steakhouse Stack for good', about the limited-edition item. But the Steakhouse Stack isn't the only exciting addition coming to McDonald's menus this summer . As the weather warms up the refreshing Frozen Cherry Lemonade is sure to be a hit. For £2.99 the icy beverage is a tangy frozen lemonade with a deliciously sweet cherry-flavoured swirl. Sweet-toothed diners will be delighted by the return of the Lotus Biscoff McFlurry and Frappe. The McFlurry, available in regular and mini sizes has crunchy Biscoff biscuit crumbs swirled into the soft serve. The Frappe has a vanilla flavour base, blended with ice and Biscoff biscuit crumb which is then topped with caramel-flavoured cream and a Biscoff crumb dusting. Customers who can handle the heat will want to try the McSpicy X Frank's RedHot burger with chicken breast in a hot and crispy coating, lettuce, cheese, jalapeños, slivered onions, and Frank's RedHot® Mayo all in a toasted sesame seed bun. For those who only want a taste of spice, the Frank's RedHot Mayo is perfect to dip a chip in and will be available separately exclusively in UK McDonald's locations. A new limited-edition Happy Meal will soon feature one of eight Dragon-Type Pokémon toys or one of two Little People Big Dreams books, 'I Can Make Amazing Music' or 'I Can Be a Wonderful Artist'. The special Happy Meal toys will be available from May 7 until June 17 so you better be quick. The limited-time Katsu Chicken One wrap with crispy or grilled chicken, coated in flavourful katsu sauce, onions, cucumber, and lettuce in a toasted tortilla is staying on the menu - and diners can get it for only £1.99 on Wednesdays. Also remaining available to order are the Cheesy Garlic Bread Dippers that come in a four-piece or Sharebox.
