Best Sleeper Sedans: Speak Softly and Carry Big Power
2025 Audi S8 Derived from the already luxurious and capable A8, Audi's Q-ship pairs the A8's opulence with hair-raising performance without a lot of aesthetic fanfare. Introduced in 1992, the original S8's profile was significantly raised when it was prominently featured in one of the stunning car chases in the film Ronin, but today's machine is on an entirely different level (even without a nitrous system). Under the hood of the fourth-generation S8 is a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 that sends 563 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels. Matched up with all-wheel steering and a sharpened chassis that can be outfitted with a sophisticated predictive air suspension system, the S8 can reach 60 mph from a standstill in just 3.7 seconds on its way to a 12.2-second quarter-mile time. Stopping power is equally impressive: Despite its size, the S8 takes just 105 feet to come to a halt from 60 mph. 2025 Audi S8 Specs

Ronin the rat sets Guinness World Record for landmine detection in Cambodia
A rat trained to find landmines in Cambodia has set a new world record. The rodent discovered over 100 landmines and unexploded objects, according to a charity report from last month. Ronin is a large African pouched rat. Since being deployed to northern Preah Vihear province in August 2021, he has found 109 landmines and 15 other dangerous remnants of war, according to the Belgian charity APOPO. Five-year-old Ronin has been named the most successful Mine Detection Rat (MDR) in the organisation's history. 'His exceptional accomplishments have earned him the Guinness World Records title for most landmines detected by a rat, highlighting the critical role of HeroRats in humanitarian demining,' APOPO said. Ronin beat the previous record, held by hero rodent Magawa. Magawa found 71 landmines and 38 unexploded ordnances during his five-year service before retirement in 2021. Magawa, a hero recognised with a gold medal, cleared landmines from approximately 225,000 square meters of land, which is about the size of 42 football pitches. He passed away in 2022. Cambodia is littered with mines, discarded ammunition and other arms from decades of war starting in the 1960s. After more than 30 years of civil war ended in 1998, Cambodia was left as one of the most heavily mined countries in the world. Deaths from mines and unexploded ordnance are still common, with around 20,000 fatalities since 1979, and twice that number wounded. Agence France-Presse Questions Why is it important to find landmines, even from many years ago? Why are rats better than humans at finding landmines?

French army hopes for combat-ready robots by 2040

PHOTO: AFP BEYNES, France - France's armed forces are on schedule to develop battle-ready robots by 2040, according to participants in a test bringing together the military with engineers, researchers and defence contractors. 'We hope to have something fairly evolved within three years, with the first ground robot capabilities ready to equip our forces,' said the army's commander of future combat, General Bruno Baratz. At the recent competition event over several weeks – the third such exercise since the armed forces set the 2040 target four years ago – robots fitted with legs, wheels, and treads navigated obstacles and evaded traps at a base west of Paris to test their ability to hold ground against enemy forces. From surveillance to mine clearing, robots are 'already very useful for protecting our units', said General Tony Maffeis, the head of the army's technical branch, during the Collaboration-Man-Machine (CoHoMa) challenge. 'Now we need to prove they can be more effective when they come into contact with an adversary,' he said. 'The robot must facilitate combat, not hold it back,' Gen Maffeis added, underscoring the challenges that still stand in the way of deploying robots into the field - especially when it comes to navigating rough terrain. A competition like this 'allows us to get out of the lab and tackle a realistic mission,' said Mr Baptiste Lepelletier, one of the participants. Robotics 'booming' in Ukraine The French army has explored the use of ground robots since 2021, but the war in Ukraine, where drones – cheaper and more abundant – are reshaping warfare, has enormously accelerated their evolution. 'Ground robotics is booming in Ukraine, but it's still complex and less developed, so it's important to explore what practical uses they could have,' said army chief of staff Pierre Schill. A CoHoMa participant giving a demonstration of an experimental combat robot. PHOTO: AFP One problem is that they cannot operate effectively without aerial drones to guide them. French defence firm Thales brought one robot that features a launch pad for a drone that scouts for obstacles and maps a route. The military said it has already incorporated some developments from two previous CoHoMa challenges but sees even bigger changes in the next few years. But before they are used in combat, the first applications will be in logistics, with drone convoys or robotic mules carrying gear.
