Roodepoort family pleads for justice after brutal attack
A peaceful morning turned into a horrific scene when Quinten van Niekerk's life was almost taken in the early hours of May 21. Roodepoort Record reports that he was brutally attacked by a wanted suspect who is on the run for attempted murder and several other charges. This comes after his sister Geneké van Niekerk shared a post on her Facebook page about the attack, highlighting that the suspect in question is on the run. According to Geneké, Quinten's life was threatened twice in just over a month, both times by the same suspect. 'Since Quinten was busy with renovations, the suspect saw an opportunity to gain access to his house and attack him. We are still unable to determine how he managed to enter the estate when the CCTV footage only provides evidence of him leaving the premises. When Quinten saw him, he shouted and yelled for help, which woke up his partner, only for her to find the suspect on top of Quinten with a knife. 'His partner ran to him and tried to protect him by lying on top of him with her back faced to the suspect, but unfortunately, got caught in the chaos and was stabbed in the chest by the suspect after a brutal tussle between all three of them. 'The suspect tried to flee the scene but hid behind their home in an attempt to attack Quinten again. While feeling slightly dizzy from his stab wound, Quinten took the belt from the bathrobe and wrapped it around his wound to stop the bleeding and check if the suspect was gone,' Geneké explains. The suspect stole Quinten's vehicle and fled the scene, driving through the estate's security gates to escape. The stolen vehicle was later found abandoned near a shopping complex on Hendrik Potgieter Road. Geneké added that they opened a case at the Honeydew Police Station for the second time. 'On April 13, the suspect broke into Quinten's home and stabbed him in the foot, causing significant damage to his property while his children were in his home, further heightening the horror of the situation. In the wake of the second attack, it was revealed to us that the suspect's friends were allegedly sharing messages on WhatsApp, expressing hope that Quinten had died from his injuries while he was still recovering at Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital. 'Quinten's children are still traumatised, watching these two situations unfold and feeling helpless, pleading with the suspect to leave their father alone. 'We just want justice for my brother and for him and his family to be safe and not have to constantly look over their shoulders,' Geneké adds. Geneké confirmed that the police assured her that an investigation is still ongoing. Questions have been sent to the police for comment, and no response has been forthcoming. Serenity Haven: Allegations of abuse and labour disputes arise
Allegations of abuse and neglect of patients and staff at Serenity Haven Frail Care Centre have been mounting since it emerged last year that the centre had allegedly suffered a financial loss of about R2.1m over four years at the hands of a former staff member. The Roodepoort Record has, since late last year, received numerous complaints from current and former staff members, families of former patients, and former volunteers, about conditions at the centre, which included allegations of neglect and abuse, sometimes violent, of staff and patients by the owner, George Mouton. Also read: Serenity Haven: Criminal charges to follow Allegations included that patients were fed rotten and expired food, while Mouton himself lived like a king on food donated to the haven, and that patients were often neglected, developing bed sores and other ailments due to insufficient care. Rupert September, owner of Maestro Assist, who was roped in to assist the Haven get back on track after the alleged theft came to light, says it was not long before they realised that the allegations against Mouton were more than just rumours spread by disgruntled former employees. 'We tried everything in our power to assist George in his quest to rectify things at the Haven,' he says. 'He was very resistant to some of the changes we tried to implement, and initially we thought it was just because he is an older man, set in his ways. 'It soon became clear he was trying to hide the real extent of what was going on, and we had to make a decision that we could not in good conscience remain part of the Haven, so we withdrew.' According to September, shortly after their withdrawal, he was approached by several staff members, asking for help. Also read: Frail care centre closed amid abuse allegations 'They complained of impossible working conditions and frequent outbursts by Mouton, which sometimes became violent. 'We assisted them by taking them to the Labour Department in Roodepoort, where it was discovered that not one of them was registered. It was also revealed that they were being paid substantially less than the legal minimum salary.' According to September, Mouton let all his staff go in April after it emerged that they had approached the Labour Department. In an interview with the Record, Mouton insisted this was untrue, and that he let the staff go because he could no longer afford to pay them due to the fact that R2.1m had been siphoned off from his accounts. Also read: Frail care centre loses millions in alleged theft He alleged that he was making use of volunteers and students to care for his patients. Mouton has, over numerous interviews with the Record, maintained his innocence, citing disgruntled employees spreading falsehoods about him as the origin of complaints. He maintains that he has never become violent with patients or staff, and insists that he ate the same food as his patients every day.
