Panthers 2025 training camp tracker: Top takeaways and observations from Day 5
The Carolina Panthers, for the first time this summer, have thrown on the pads. Here are the top takeaways and observations from Monday's (partially heated) outing of training camp . . . Activated Before the start of practice, the Panthers officially activated defensive lineman Bobby Brown III and punter Sam Martin from the active/non-football injury list. Both Brown and Martin were dealing with minor hamstring injuries. They are now cleared to return to the field. T-Mac hits back Rookie wideout Tetairoa McMillan was bested by starting cornerback Mike Jackson during one-on-one drills at Saturday's session. But the eighth overall pick got his lick back on the veteran this morning . . . Head coach Dave Canales talked about McMillan's breakaway speed. "He plays fast," Canales told reporters. "That was kinda going back to his film from Arizona. His play speed is what you look at. And yes, we take into consideration what the 40 time looks like. He ran a 4.5. He's fast. But he's a tall guy. And a lot of times, those guys, their stride builds up as they get going—in particular when he's running across the field. He can pretty much separate and run away from anybody, regardless of what the 40 time says." Quarterback Bryce Young then talked about McMillan's spectacular catch. "Yeah, that was a great job of him going and tracking the ball," Young stated. "It was great coverage, and that's the league. It's gonna be a lot of great corners out there, a lot of contested catches. It was a great job by T-Mac understanding leverage, fighting pressure with pressure, fading out at the last moment." McMillan also notched a few more impressive grabs, putting a stamp on what was his best showing of the summer. Still hunting McMillan wasn't the only receiver who shined on Monday. Veteran Hunter Renfrow also turned heads, continuing his standout offseason with another strong day. Renfrow, however, knows his journey to the initial 53-man roster is far from over. The former Pro Bowler praised his fellow wideouts. "We have a bunch of different personalities, bunch of different ages. But amazing," he said. "I think we have a really good group, I think we have a really talented group. It's the deepest I've ever been around. We have seven or eight guys that can comfortably go out there and play and a lot of young guys that are proving they can. "And so, it just pushes you. It pushes you every day. I think the Bible talks about iron sharpening iron—and that's what it is. And hopefully, we can do that every day and then the other people we have out there can see that and be inspired from that and make every day the best we can." Canales, who lauded Renfrow for his work again on Monday, did not rule out using the 29-year-old as a returner moving forward. Furthermore, Harper unveiled his own personal logo on the sneakers for the first time. Dylan Harper's Nike Logo This particular Nike GT Cut appears in a clean white ensemble, complete with silver metallic accents to complement the Spurs' color scheme. Nice touches are added with the icy translucent outsole and the orange lace tips, but the star of the show here is Harper's logo featured for the first time on a sneaker. The logo features a 'D' disrupted by an electrical current, reminiscent of the way Harper appears when he's got the ball in his hands. Superman star Nathan Fillion defends his character's haircut after fan uproar on social media
Nathan Fillion , the Superman star, has defended his character's iconic hairstyle in the movie after his look faced criticism from fans. The actor plays the DC Comics character Guy Gardner , a law enforcer who is also the Green Lantern, in the new Superman film, which was released on Friday, July 11, 2025. He plays the role of a superhero who derives powers from his sparkling green ring. Fillion wears a blonde bowl cut wig. As various teasers and trailers were released ahead of the film's release, viewers and fans have said that they don't like this hairstyle. The 'Rookie' actor, however, has now come out in defense of the haircut. He told CNN that the look is 'canon' to the original character in the DC Comics. 'I don't think you can do a Guy Gardner without doing the hair. I think it would be a disservice,' he said. ''Ummm, Guy Gardner is meant to look dumb with the bowl cut,' I don't care it still looks dumb,' one wrote in December 2024, according to Independent. While another wrote on X at the time: 'Hyped for Nathan Fillion as a Lantern, but a bowl cut?' 'Wtf happened to Green Lantern. Why is his haircut so ridiculous?' a third wrote in May. Many people, however, agreed that the bowl cut was a big part of Fillion's character. 'Guy Gardner's Green Lantern looks terrible in the exact way he should. Comic accurate,' one wrote on X in December 2024. In an episode of HBO Max's DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast in May 2025, Fillion said that the hairstyle of his character was discussed before the movie was filmed. He, however, ultimately pushed for Gardner to have the bowl cut. Live Events 'There was some talk about some different types of things we were going to go,' he said. 'I was team bowl cut the whole way. It's canon. It's set. I said, 'If we don't do a bowl cut, we're going to hear about it,' he added.'

‘Superman' star Nathan Fillion staunchly defends his character's extreme hairstyle: ‘I was team bowl cut the whole way'
Chances are you've seen the promos for the new 'Superman' movie and wondered, 'What the heck is going on with Nathan Fillion's hair?!' The 'Rookie' actor is featured in the new DC Studios extravaganza as Guy Gardner, one of the comic book characters who is elected to a position of intergalactic law enforcer known as a Green Lantern (yes – like the Green Lantern that Ryan Reynolds portrayed in the 2011 film). In the new 'Superman' movie, just as in the pages of the comics, Guy rocks a severe bowl cut, complete with a mop of blondish bangs. Fillion was on hand at the 'Superman' premiere in Hollywood earlier this week, where he was quick to defend the very unique (for a grown man, and definitely a superhero, at least) haircut, which some might feel doesn't translate seamlessly from page to screen. Reminding us that the hairstyle is 'canon' to the original comics, Fillion told CNN, 'I don't think you can do a Guy Gardner without doing the hair. I think it would be a disservice.' Adding that the look is 'integral to the character,' Fillion pointed out that it even may clue viewers in to Gardner's specific brand of bravado: 'If you see a guy walking down the street with a bowl cut, that guy clearly doesn't give a damn what you think about him. And that's Guy Gardner.' Indeed, Fillion's Gardner is one of the many characters who provides brashness and comic levity to 'Superman' – somehow he gets by throughout the entire film with only Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) making one (much-needed) crack about his coif. 'I embrace the bowl cut,' he also said this week. 'There was some talk about trying different hairstyles, and I was team bowl cut the whole way.' And while the haircut didn't pose too much of a problem for Fillion on the set of the new tentpole, something else about portraying the Green Lantern did prove challenging. 'Flying is so fun to watch, it's fun to do, but the harnesses that you have to wear, they're not built for comfort,' he shared. 'They're claustrophobic, they're very constricting, they're uncomfortable. I had a fist-sized purple bruise on my kidney from one.' He added that the physical discomfort notwithstanding, he considers himself to be 'very very picky about flight in film, so it was extremely important to me to get it right. That was a challenge.' Fillion has worked repeatedly with 'Superman' director James Gunn, ever since starring in Gunn's gross-out horror comedy 'Slither' in 2006. Next year, Fillion will be reprise the role of Guy Gardner in a DC-based TV series titled 'Lanterns,' costarring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre and co-executive produced by Gunn. 'Superman' debuts in theaters on July 11. The film is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, which is owned by CNN's parent company.
