Berlin Rookie Test standouts Gabriele Minì and Kush Maini share insights after impressive runs

A strong contingent of 22 rookie drivers showcased their potential on track, with several emerging talents setting competitive lap times. Italian driver Gabriele Minì topped both sessions and set the fastest lap of the day at 57.643 seconds. Mahindra Racing's Kush Maini and TAG Heuer Porsche's Ayhancan Güven followed closely behind Minì in the two sessions, respectively. Top performers Gabriele Minì and Kush Maini reflect on Berlin Rookie Test The highly competitive test saw all 22 drivers separated by a mere 1.5 seconds, as teams ramped up their development programs with rookie talent. Collectively, more than 1,000 laps were completed over the course of the day. Sharing a few pictures from Berlin, Gabriele Minì wrote on Instagram, 'Fastest in Berlin. Very happy about the Rookie Test: a productive day with 96 laps covered, multiple race simulations, quali runs, and we set the overall fastest time of the whole #BerlinEPrix weekend. Thanks @nismo for this year's second opportunity after FP0 in Jeddah and for these brilliant days together.' Indian driver Kush Maini, fresh off his historic FIA Formula 2 win, continued to impress in Mahindra's GEN3 Evo machine by securing the second-fastest time of the day. He appeared pleased with his performance in both sessions, finishing second in the morning and third in the afternoon. Reflecting on his experience with Mahindra Racing, he said, 'I think it was a very strong day overall. We always made progress, and the team gathered some good data for London. Obviously, it's a different track, so we tested a lot of things. In the morning, we focused on 350kW runs, and in the afternoon, more on race runs. Whatever the run, we were always in the top three and really fast, so a good step was made. Whenever I get into this car, I leave with a smile on my face. ' Jak Crawford and Abbi Pulling share their Berlin Rookie Test experience American F2 race winner Jak Crawford also made a notable rookie return, claiming third place in the morning session while driving for Andretti. Sharing his thoughts, he said, 'It was a great day testing in Berlin. I feel like we really got the opportunity to try a lot of setup items and gain a solid understanding of everything. It felt good to be back in the car, and I was able to get up to speed right from the start, which really helped us begin working on things early in the session. Hopefully, the work pays off and the team can deliver a strong result in London.' Abbi Pulling, one of the women drivers in the Berlin Rookie Test, drove for Nissan. She looked content with the day's progress and said, 'It was a great day—very productive—and we achieved everything the team needed. I'm happy to take on this new role with the Nissan Formula E Team, as it's created a new pathway for me to experience machinery at the World Championship level. The morning involved a lot of runs focused on race settings and data gathering, and in the afternoon we did more push laps, testing several important items ahead of the London finale. These cars are so unique. There's always something new to pick up. I took a lot away from Madrid, but there's still more to work on. That's where my focus will be.' Berlin's Tempelhof circuit presents its own challenges, far removed from the smoother, more traditional F1 Academy tracks she's used to. 'I've raced on street circuits before, but Tempelhof is raw and unforgiving. It's narrow, bumpy, and there's very little room for error. Even though I'm not racing wheel-to-wheel, you can tell that if you get it wrong, there's no coming back. That kind of pressure forces you to be perfect in every corner.' Pulling is also playing a vital role in Nissan's simulator development, an increasingly important tool in modern racing, especially with limited physical testing allowed. 'The simulator is massive for me,' she explained. 'It's the most cost-effective way to prepare and helps me get familiar with all the technical systems, energy targets, regen braking, front motor activation. There's a lot more to manage than in the high-downforce cars I've driven. Being able to build muscle memory in the sim makes a huge difference when I get on track.' With the support of a team like Nissan behind her, she's well positioned to continue progressing toward a full-time seat. 'The goal is always to earn a place on the grid,' she said. 'That's what I'm working toward every day.' 'I feel like I've now had a few opportunities to drive the GEN3 car, all in different circumstances,' Chadwick explained. 'The last time was during an FP0 session, which had a slightly different focus. For the rookie test, it's great to have the full day. My priority is to get up to speed quickly and ultimately do the best job I can for the team.' With just one race remaining in the 2024–2025 Formula E season, teams are pushing to fine-tune their setups and test new ideas and Chadwick is eager to contribute. 'I want to do everything I can to support the team and have a clean, productive day.' Her ongoing relationship with Jaguar has provided a foundation for growth and continuity in her racing pursuits. 'I've worked with Jaguar on and off over the past few years,' she said. 'It's been great to build a relationship over time. They're incredibly welcoming and open to having me involved. 'But one of the things I really enjoy about Formula E is the variety. No two tracks are the same, some are purpose-built, some are street circuits, and then you have places like this. Adapting to that variation is a huge part of the skillset.' With the rookie test following a full race weekend, she and the team had ample data and insight heading into the session. 'We've been able to follow and learn a lot, so that should put us in a good place. It's a cool track with a unique vibe.' Outside of Formula E, Chadwick has had a busy and fulfilling season. She competed in the Mille Miglia and continues her campaign in the European Le Mans Series, adding endurance racing to her growing repertoire. 'I'm feeling really good and enjoying every opportunity that comes my way,' she said. 'Mille Miglia was a big highlight, even though we didn't finish, it was incredible. I'm really enjoying ELMS as well. The challenge of endurance racing is great, and it's been so valuable to have that variety in my career.' Berlin Rookie Test 2025: Cupra Kiro nominates GB3 champion Callum Voisin; Maserati MSG Racing selects Arthur Leclerc
Image Credit: Instagram Almost all teams have announced their nominations for this season's Berlin Rookie Test, which will be held just after the conclusion of the Berlin E-Prix. The test plays a crucial role in identifying rising talent in motorsport, giving them an opportunity to prove their worth and potentially be selected by Formula E teams for future races. The upcoming Berlin E-Prix will take place at the Tempelhof Airport Circuit on July 14 Berlin Rookie Test nominations To qualify for the Berlin Rookie Test, drivers are required to hold either a full E-Licence or a Free Practice Only E-Licence. Maserati MSG Racing have nominated Theo Pourchaire and Arthur Leclerc for the test. Leclerc had earlier joined Maserati as a Development Driver in 2017 and went on to serve as a Test and Reserve Driver in 2019–2020. He also participated in the Rookie Test in Marrakesh in 2019. Cupra Kiro has nominated 2023 GB3 champion Callum Voisin and Bianca Bustamante for the Berlin Rookie Test. The 19-year-old Voisin participated in the Formula 3 Championship and went on to win the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, where he claimed pole position and set the fastest lap. He is currently ninth in the Formula 3 Drivers' standings. On the other hand, Bustamante is a Kiro Development Driver and an F1 Academy race winner. Cupra Kiro Team Principal Alex Hui said about the nominated drivers, 'From his GB3 title win to some standout performances in Formula 3, Callum has a rare blend of speed, intelligence, and composure at the wheel – traits which make him one of the most promising young British drivers in motorsport today. 'Mahindra is a manufacturer I've worked with first-hand a lot over the last 18 months, and I've seen the hard work and development that has gone into improving the team's results on-track. 'It's a great source of pride for me to represent them, and to help them push on and keep that rate of development going.' Earlier this season, Maini, 24, set the benchmark time under the lights in a dedicated Rookie Free Practice session in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, his first taste of the Mahindra M11Electro and Formula E's GEN3 Evo era.
