Ukrainian drones shot down near Moscow as Russia attacks Kyiv, official claims

Editor's Note: This is a developing story and is being updated. Russian air defense units intercepted en route to Moscow overnight on May 25, according to Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin. Sobyanin's claims came as Russia launched a large-scale aerial attack against Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities for the second night in a row. Six drones were shot down as they flew towards Moscow, Sobyanin reported. Emergency workers were dispatched to the scene. No casualties or damage have been reported at the time of publication. The Kyiv Independent could not verify Sobyanin's claims. Ukraine rarely comments on reports of drone strikes on Russian soil. Amid the reported attack, restrictions were introduced at Moscow's Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports, as well as Russia's Kaluga airport, according to the Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsiya). As Russia's war drags on and the Kremlin has openly said it opposes a ceasefire, Ukraine has stepped up its drone attacks on Russian soil. In the past week, Russia has claimed that mass Ukrainian drone strikes targeted Moscow and other regions several nights in a row. Ukraine regularly attacks Russian military infrustructure with drones. The recent surge in drone strikes aims to disrupt airport operations, overwhelm air defenses, and make the war visible to the Russian public. Drone attacks halt flights at Moscow airports

Planes have been grounded at the city's main Sheremetyevo airport, as well as at Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky, Rosaviatsiya. (EPA Images pic) MOSCOW : Air traffic around Moscow was disrupted on Thursday as the Russian capital came under a heavy drone attack, the city's mayor and the civil aviation authority said. Russia has intercepted 23 drones flying towards Moscow since midnight (2100 GMT), Mayor Sergei Sobyanin wrote in a series of posts on Telegram. 'Emergency services specialists are working at the site of the fallen debris,' he wrote. The attack came a day after 27 drones were launched towards the city, according to the mayor. Russia deployed a record number of drones against Ukraine at the weekend, Kyiv said Sunday. The two countries have deployed drones against one another on a near daily basis since Russia launched its military offensive on Ukraine more than three years ago, but Moscow has been rarely impacted. On Thursday, flights were halted at multiple Moscow airports, Russia's aviation authority Rosaviatsiya said. Planes have been grounded at the city's main Sheremetyevo airport, as well as at Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky, Rosaviatsiya said on Telegram. Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly rebuffed calls by Kyiv and the West for an unconditional and immediate ceasefire. Russia now controls around a fifth of Ukraine, including the Crimean peninsula which it annexed in 2014. The fighting has killed tens of thousands, forced millions to flee their homes and destroyed cities and villages across the east and south of Ukraine.

MOSCOW: Russia's defence ministry said Friday that it had downed 112 Ukrainian drones in a third night of attacks, with Moscow again targeted with strikes that again disrupted operations at several airports. Since Thursday evening, 'air defence systems destroyed and intercepted 112 Ukrainian drones', including 24 that were headed toward the capital, the ministry said. Eight people were wounded in the Lipetsk region around 450 kilometres (280 miles) southeast of Moscow when debris from a falling drone struck an industrial zone in the city of Yelets and caused a fire, regional governor Igor Artamonov said on Telegram.
