Tahaad Pettiford withdraws from NBA Draft, will return to Auburn basketball

AUBURN — After nearly two months of waiting, Bruce Pearl now knows he'll have a key contributor back in the fold for the 2025-26 campaign. Tahaad Pettiford withdrew from the NBA draft process on Wednesday to return to Auburn basketball for his sophomore season, the program announced. In one season, the freshman rose to stardom as one of the best in his class in the country. He was Auburn's third-leading scorer, averaging 11.6 points and 3.0 assists per game. Advertisement During the Tigers' run to the Final Four, he was vital, averaging 17.3 points between the Round of 64 and Elite Eight. He scored 23 and 20 points, respectively, in Auburn's NCAA Tournament wins over Creighton and Michigan. Year Two at Auburn is expected to bring more for Pettiford, which Pearl expanded on earlier this month. "If he does come back, he's going to have to play an expanded role, which I know is something that is exciting to him and probably exciting to our fan base, too, because we'll get to see more of him," Pearl said May 19. "He'll be a starter. There will be more on him." Adam Cole is the Auburn athletics beat writer for the Montgomery Advertiser. Lloyd Harris banks R1.6 million after French Open Round 1 loss

South Africa's No 1 Lloyd Harris put in a brave performance in his first round match at the French Open at Roland Garros on Tuesday. Ultimately, the 27-year-old went down 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 against Russian 17th-seed Andrey Rublev. The match out on Court 7 lasted two hours and 24 minutes. Harris can console himself with a cheque for €78 000 (R1 586 832) following his opening round exit. Harris had qualified for the men's singles draw of this year's French Open after a determined run through the qualifying rounds. Harris, currently ranked a lowly 330th in the world, battled through three tough matches on the clay courts of Paris, showcasing his growing comfort on the surface that has traditionally been his weakest. In his final qualifying match, Harris defeated Croatia's Marin Cilic 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, using his powerful serve and baseline aggression to overcome early nerves and seal the win. In his earlier qualifiers, Harris beat Finland's Otto Virtanen 6-4, 7-5 and Switzerland's Marc-Andrea Hüsler 6-4, 6-2. Harris and Rublev have now faced each other three times at ATP Tour level – with Rublev having triumphed on every occasion. This latest defeat was the first time that Harris had managed to win a set against Rublev. Their first encounter came in 2020 in the final in Adelaide on hard court where Rublev won 6-3, 6-0. A year later they faced off in the Round of 64 on the grass at Wimbledon where Rublev won 6-1, 6-2, 7-5. Harris's best French Open result to date remains second-round appearances in 2019, 2020 and 2021. Rublev will now face unseeded Australian Adam Walton in the second round. Lloyd Harris vs Andrey Rublev

South African No 1 Lloyd Harris qualified for the men's singles draw of the 2025 French Open, securing his place at Roland Garros after a determined run through the qualifying rounds. Lloyd Harris will take on Russia's Andrey Rublev, the 17th-seed, in Round One in Paris on Court 7 on Tuesday. The two have faced each other twice previously at ATP Tour level – with Rublev having won on both occasions. In fact, Harris has never won a set against Rublev. Their first encounter came in 2020 in the final in Adelaide on hard court where Rublev won 6-3, 6-0. A year later they faced off in the Round of 64 on the grass at Wimbledon where Rublev won 6-1, 6-2, 7-5. Harris's best French Open result to date have been second-round appearances in 2019, 2020 and 2021, but fans are hopeful that this year could see a deeper run. Should Harris lose, as is expected, he will walk way €78 000 (R1.58 million) richer. The winner of the match will take on the winner of the clash between German qualifier Maximilian Marterer and unseeded Australian Adam Walton in the second round.
