Ex-hospital consultant bailed by court on indecent images and voyeurism charges

A former hospital consultant has appeared in court charged with voyeurism, attempting to incite a teenage girl to engage in sexual activity, and making indecent images of children. Dr Matthew Isles, who worked as an ear, nose and throat specialist prior to his arrest in February this year, spoke only to confirm his personal details during a brief hearing at North Staffordshire Justice Centre on Wednesday. The 53-year-old, of Whiston, near Cheadle, Staffordshire, was not asked to enter any pleas at the request of his lawyer and was granted conditional bail to appear at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on June 16. The hearing was told that 13 new charges faced by Isles, who worked at the Royal Stoke University Hospital and County Hospital, Stafford, would be joined with similar allegations already being dealt with at the Crown Court. The latest charges, read into the court record by the magistrates' clerk, include one of attempting to incite a 15-year-old girl to engage in sexual activity. Wearing a dark suit and a blue striped tie, Isles appeared before three magistrates further charged with possessing extreme pornographic images portraying sex acts involving a person and live animals, three counts of distributing indecent images of children via messaging apps and one of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child. Magistrates were told the former medic is also charged with observing a person doing a private act in 2023 for sexual gratification by recording them without consent, three counts of making indecent images of a child, one of possessing prohibited images of a child, and one of possessing extreme pornographic images 'portraying an act likely to result in serious injury to person's private parts'. The remaining new charge faced by Isles alleges that he was in possession of a 'paedophile manual movie' in February this year at Whiston 'which contained advice or guidance' about sexual abuse. The University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) said in February that it was fully co-operating with the police in their investigation but it could not comment on an active criminal case. The Trust has since confirmed that Isles is no longer one of its employees.

Popular motorcyclist lost leg after crash on Anglesey

A popular motorcyclist is recovering after losing part of his leg following a crash. Chris Newman's family have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and affection for the 53-year-old. He was in a collision between his Honda motorbike and a Seat Ibiza car near Trearddur Bay on Anglesey at 9.30pm on May 1. It is understood an investigation is ongoing about the incident in Lon Isallt. Mr Newman suffered 15 major injuries and was airlifted to the Royal Stoke University Hospital. He had to have part of his right leg amputated but his family said medics are keeping his spirits up. Get the best island stories from our Anglesey newsletter - sent every Friday Relatives have set up a Gofundme appeal to help fund Chris's rehabilitation which quickly smashed through its £5,000 target. It currently stands at £6,915. Son Michael, 28, told North Wales Live that a campsite worker heard the collision, came rushing out and contacted the relevant people. Michael, who is an architectural assistant in Leeds, found out about the accident the following morning from his family. "It was a bit scary trying to find out what had happened." He said unfortunately the injuries meant part of his dad's right leg was "irrecoverable". While in hospital in Stoke he is being well cared for by staff. "Nurses come to check on him every 15 to 20 minutes, keeping him perked up. He's very much a bubbly person so he likes that." "We had £5,000 yesterday which was insane (and now it's over £6,000). It's brilliant." He said his parents used to run a shop in Trearddur Bay and helped other people. "They would deliver milk to care homes free of charge," said Michael. Later Chris was a gas engineer and would go out of his way to help people. Now it seems that goodwill is being reciprocated. Michael said: "So many people have contributed to the appeal to support him. It's really nice. He said he finds it a bit overwhelming." The donations are expected to go towards Chris's rehabilitation costs. He lives in a static caravan in the Trearddur Bay area which may be adapted for his needs and a prosthetic limb may be an option. As for Michael, he is due to marry his fiancee Marged Enlli Huws in June and is desperately hoping his dad will be well enough to attend the ceremony. On their on Gofundme page called "Chris's amputation recovery", Michael wrote: "He suffered 15 major injures from the collision which left him going through weeks of operations within the ICU of Stoke hospital. Despite the doctors best efforts he unfortunately had to have a leg amputation. "These injuries will not only affect his day to day life but also affect his ability to work. Many of you will know my dad from Trearddur Bay, where he's been a familiar and friendly face for years. "As a dedicated gas engineer, he's always been someone people could rely on - whether it was fixing a boiler in the middle of winter or lending a helping hand in the community. "He's poured his heart and soul into supporting others, and now we're hoping others will do the same for him. Unfortunately, doctors have confirmed that he will no longer be able to return to work. "This has put a significant financial strain on him and our family. We are raising £5,000 to help ease the immediate financial pressure - covering essential living costs, amend his living arrangements to accommodate his disability, therapy, and travel expenses for hospital visits. "Any amount, no matter how little, would mean the world to us. If you're unable to donate, sharing this page would be just as appreciated. We're grateful for the love and kindness shown to him already, and we know he'll be deeply touched by the support of the community he's been proud to serve." He has since been released under investigation. PC Mark Walker, of the Roads Crime Unit, said: 'I am urging anybody who witnessed this collision, or anybody who was travelling in the area and who may have dash cam footage to contact us as soon as possible,' and to quote reference number 25000361933. * The Gofundme page is called Chris's amputation recovery and the address is here.

Murder life sentences after pair caught on CCTV setting fire to 'wrong' Wolverhampton house

Two men who launched a "horrific" arson attack on a family home in Wolverhampton, killing a 26-year-old man and leaving his mother with life-changing injuries, have been jailed for life. Daniel Tatters was caught on a security camera smashing and removing a bay window at the home of Akashdeep Singh, before using a flammable liquid to engulf the living room in flames. Tatters was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 34 years. Dale Francis, who acted as a driver and look-out at the scene, was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 36 years. Both men, who are from Stoke-on-Trent, were both unanimously convicted of murder, arson with intent to endanger life and attempted murder on Tuesday, after jurors deliberated for more than nine hours. "You intended to kill" The judge told them: 'The family are now all traumatised by the death of Akashdeep Singh. 'I am sure you intended to kill anyone who found themselves in the house at the time of the fire.' In a victim impact statement read to the court before the sentence, Akashdeep's family said the fire at his home was an act of 'pure evil' meant for someone else, which had left a normal family suffering 'unimaginable' pain and suffering. A three-week trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court was told that a security camera filmed Daniel Tatters as he smashed and removed a bay window at the home of Akashdeep Singh, before using a flammable liquid to engulf the living room in flames. Mr Singh died in hospital hours later after being trapped upstairs by the blaze at his home in Plascom Road in East Park in Wolverhampton, which the court heard may have been targeted by mistake. Prosecutors alleged that Tatters, 26, and 37-year-old Francis had started the fire at about 1am on June 25 last year 'as the outcome of a considered agreement' following several previous journeys to familiarise themselves with the area. A lighter found by fire crews near the bay window was found to have Tatters's DNA on it, while phone records, an in-car tracking device and other CCTV footage linked Francis, of Clare Street, Basford, Stoke-on-Trent, to the attack. Tatters told jurors he had never been to Wolverhampton and had cut his hand on a glass pane while falling over in his garden. Francis, whose barrister described the consequences of the fire as tragic and horrific, declined to give evidence, claiming in a written statement he thought his accomplice only intended to 'torch' a car. Prosecutor Mark Heywood KC opened the case at the start of the trial, saying the defendants had travelled around 40 miles from Stoke-on-Trent in Francis's Volkswagen Golf. Tatters visited the Royal Stoke University Hospital around two-and-a-half hours after the fire for treatment for cuts to his fingers. CCTV proved Tatters, who was staying at an address in Sneyd Green, Stoke-on-Trent, went on foot to Plascom Road after the Golf was parked in Sutherland Avenue, around a third of a mile away. The footage also showed the driver's door of the Golf being opened minutes before two figures were seen entering East Park at a location said to be a six-minute walk to Plascom Road. "Each of them shared the intention to murder all the occupants" Mr Heywood told the court: 'Their actions make it clear that, whichever one of them actually started the fire, each of them shared the intention to murder all the occupants and each assisted and/or encouraged the other to carry that out as planned. 'As to why they went to that house on that night, and as to why they did what they did, these are not matters which the prosecution need to prove. It may never be possible to know why. 'Only the would-be killers or those involved in the enterprise may know that, and for obvious reasons, you may think, they would never reveal it.'
