Coimbatore police recover 68.6 lakh from cyber fraudsters in seven months

Coimbatore: The district cybercrime police have recovered Rs68.61 lakh from online financial fraudsters in connection with 20 cases in the past seven months. "We have frozen Rs93 lakh in various accounts that the city residents lost to cyber fraudsters from January 1 to July 31 this year. Out of that, Rs68.61 lakh was recovered and handed over to the victims," a police officer said. He said they had a dedicated team to identify the bank accounts used by online scamsters to receive money from their victims. "The team requests banks to freeze such accounts. After verifying transactions, banks transfer the amount to respective courts. The recovered money is then handed over to the victims in the form of demand drafts or online transactions." Pointing out that online financial crimes were on the rise in the city, the officer said they had arrested five cyber fraudsters since January this year and remanded them in judicial custody. "Reporting cyber scams to police immediately after the occurrence is important in initiating the recovery procedure." He said the cases related to online gambling and loan app scams have decreased in recent times. "However, the number of people losing their hard-earned money to online investment and digital arrest scams is still on the rise. We are creating awareness among people to curtail such online scams." If K Chandrasekhar Rao willing, I'll visit him to discuss Krishna water, says Telangana CM Revanth Reddy

HYDERABAD: Amidst the war of words between Congress and BRS over water rights, chief minister A on Wednesday expressed his willingness to go to the Erravelli farmhouse of former CM K Chandrasekhar Rao ( ) to discuss the issue of projects and sharing of Krishna water with Andhra Pradesh. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The CM said the govt was always ready to hold a separate assembly session for discussion if KCR was open to attending it. Addressing ministers, MPs and MLAs at Praja Bhavan following a detailed presentation on Krishna water sharing, he said: "We are ready whenever you (KCR) notify the Speaker. Let's review the decisions made during your tenure and ours. I assure you that there will be no confusion and that everyone's dignity will be upheld. If your health does not allow you to attend, please inform us of a suitable date. I will arrange for a team of ministers to conduct a mock assembly at your Erravelli farmhouse. If necessary, I am also willing to participate with public representatives at the Erravelli farmhouse." "But I can come only to the farmhouse or assembly, not to clubs and pubs," the CM said. The CM said that when it came to Telangana's water share, KCR had betrayed the people of state more than leaders from Andhra under United AP. "If a single whip is warranted for Andhra leaders during united AP, then KCR deserves a hundred whips for his actions," he said. The CM also asked KCR why he did not exert pressure for Hyderabad's water share. "When the water share was being determined, the argument should have been that Hyderabad is a common quota for both AP and Telangana as 20% of AP population resides here. If that had been arranged, Hyderabad would not be facing difficulties in securing Krishna water," he said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Highlighting that BRS govt failed to construct projects at Jurala, which allowed AP to extract more water, the CM said, "If water had been redirected from Jurala to Palamuru Rangareddy, AP would not have had that opportunity. If Krishna water had been captured immediately upon entering Telangana, there would have been no chance to divert it to Rayalaseema. The diversion of water rendered the power project ineffective, resulting in losses for Telangana in terms of electricity. We missed the chance to obtain power at a lower cost." The CM said that during the Congress administration in United AP water was supplied to 54 lakh acres and the cost per acre was Rs93,000.

Gold up Rs108,500 in FY25

Gold prices in Pakistan registered a sharp rise over the past year, mirroring gains in the international market and fueled by a combination of currency depreciation, inflationary pressures and strong investor demand. According to the All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association (APSGJA), the price of 24-karat gold surged Rs108,500 per tola since June 29, 2024, reaching Rs350,200. The 10-gram rate similarly jumped over Rs93,000 to Rs300,240. This substantial appreciation comes as global gold prices continue to climb, moving up from $2,326 to above $3,280 per ounce over the same period. On June 29, 2024, the international gold price stood at $2,326 per ounce, with the local rate for 24-karat gold at Rs241,700 per tola and Rs207,219 per 10 grams. The price for 22-karat gold was Rs189,950 per 10 grams. In contrast, according to the latest update from APSGJA, the price of 24-karat gold has risen sharply to Rs350,200 per tola – a jump of Rs108,500 over the 12-month period. Similarly, the 10-gram gold rate has increased to Rs300,240, reflecting a substantial rise of over Rs93,000 compared to last year's levels. Gold prices in Pakistan posted a modest increase on Monday, following a similar trend in the international market where the precious metal inched higher amid a weaker US dollar. Investors are now awaiting key US economic data due later this week for cues on Fed's future policy direction. The price of gold rose Rs800 per tola, reaching Rs350,200. Similarly, the price of 10-gram gold climbed Rs686 to Rs300,240. Interactive Commodities Director Adnan Agar noted that gold touched intra-day high of $3,296 and low of $3,259 in the international market. He described the overall market trend as downward, with potential support zones at $3,220 and $3,200. Spot gold rose 0.5% to $3,287.64 per ounce as of 1447 GMT after reaching its lowest point since May 29 earlier in the session, according to Reuters. The yellow metal was up for the second straight quarter, rising 5.2%. Meanwhile, the Pakistani rupee registered a slight decline against the US dollar on Monday, slipping 0.01% in the inter-bank market. It concluded fiscal year 2024-25 with a year-on-year depreciation of 1.95%. At the close of trading, the rupee settled at 283.76, down four paisa from the previous session. On a yearly basis, the rupee depreciated Rs5.42 compared to the closing rate of 278.34 recorded at the end of the previous fiscal year. Analysts attribute the currency's subdued performance to persistent pressure from rising import demand.

Centre plotting against K-P govt: CM

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur on Monday said that the provincial government was a trust bestowed by the PTI's patron-in-chief, Imran Khan, warning that if directed, he would dissolve the provincial assembly without a moment's hesitation. Addressing the K-P Assembly, Gandapur said that the events of May 9 were merely used as a pretext for launching a full-blown assault on the PTI. "All forces have been bent on eliminating the party and its leader," he alleged, adding that those who abandoned the incarcerated party chairman were nothing short of "cowards and dishonourable". He went on to accuse the federal government of conspiring to topple the K-P government through the imposition of a financial emergency. However, he warned that the province would not allow such schemes to succeed. He shared that the parliamentary party and political committee have granted his government approval to pass the provincial budget, adding that it will implement changes in the budget without delay upon Imran's directives. Gandapur also accused the establishment of orchestrating PTI's ouster from power through a carefully crafted conspiracy. He lamented that constitutional provisions were violated and elections were deliberately delayed to sabotage the party's position. "Before the February 8 general elections, our chairman was arrested, and the party was deprived of its electoral symbol," the chief minister said. "Despite all these political injustices, the public handed us a clear mandate, but that mandate was stolen in the Centre and in three provinces." Commenting on the financial crisis his government inherited, Gandapur noted that the provincial treasury contained barely enough funds to pay 15 days of salaries when his government took over. However, through sound fiscal policies, the province's revenue has now surpassed Rs93 billion, and is projected to reach Rs129 billion in the next fiscal year. The chief minister further revealed that Rs150 billion in cash reserves remain in the province's debt servicing account, generating Rs60 million in daily income. The throw-forward liability of K-P has been reduced from 13 years to just over five years, he added. "Those who hold sway over the country left no stone unturned in pushing this province towards insolvency and chaos," Gandapur claimed. He said that despite their best efforts, they had not been allowed to meet Imran Khan, and alleged that the budget approval process was being obstructed to pave the way for a federal takeover of provincial authority under the guise of a financial emergency. "We will never let this conspiracy succeed," he said. "The provincial budget is being passed as per the PTI's parliamentary and political committee's decision, but if the chairman wants anything added or removed, it will be done immediately."

Centre agrees to resolve 'financial matters'

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Finance Advisor Muzammil Aslam has announced that the federal government is now willing to recognize the province's rightful shares in net hydel profit, National Finance Commission Award (NFC Award), royalties, and other revenue heads. A meeting for the 11th National Finance Commission (NFC) has been scheduled for August, and the Center has also agreed to resolve outstanding financial matters concerning the merged tribal districts, which are administratively integrated but still face economic challenges. Addressing a post-budget press conference in Peshawar on Saturday, Aslam revealed that K-P has presented its largest-ever budget, amounting to Rs2,119 billion. He noted that the province is on track to generate Rs93 billion from its own resources. "Whether the federation provides funds or not, we are committed to spending on the tribal areas from our own treasury," he declared. Aslam emphasized a shift away from reliance on federal support, announcing plans to construct the Peshawar-DI Khan Motorway independently. He defended the provincial government's economic performance, recalling criticism when the current administration took office last year amid concerns of an empty treasury. "Today, we have presented a Rs157 billion surplus budget," he said, highlighting timely salary payments and increases of 10 per cent in salaries and seven per cent in pensions for government employees in the new fiscal year. The minimum wage has also been raised to Rs40,000. Aslam contrasted K-P's development budget of Rs547 billion with the federal government's Rs1 trillion-plus allocation, pointing out that despite being a smaller province, K-P has managed substantial development spending. He acknowledged that while the province remains under debt — currently at Rs680 billion — loan repayments have been made and a dedicated repayment fund established. He clarified that any current inflows under debt are part of previously agreed contracts, and there are no plans for new borrowing unless required for a major project. Criticizing the center for sidelining K-P, he stated that only Rs550 million have been allocated to the province this year. "Despite minimal federal cooperation and receiving Rs90 billion less under NFC allocations, we increased our development budget," he noted. K-P also allocated Rs20 billion from its own funds to the tribal districts, demonstrating its commitment to inclusive development.
