Putra Heights fire: SPNB to rebuild, repair 17 houses from next week

KEPALA BATAS: Syarikat Perumahan Negara Bhd will rebuild and repair 17 houses affected by the April 1 gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights, Selangor, starting next week. Its chief executive officer, Mohd Jamil Idris, said this is an initial project involving 11 homes that were completely destroyed and six houses for repair under the government allocation previously approved, namely a maximum of RM300,000 for rebuilding and RM150,000 for repairs. "We have entered the area, and our contractors issued appointment letters to the affected residents this week. So, starting next week, they (the contractors) will start work at the site (of the affected houses). "If we look at the data we have, so far, there are 17 houses… and this data may change," he said. He told reporters this when met at the Urban Community Sustainability Programme and SPNB corporate social responsibility programme in Taman Desa Kuala Muda. The programme was officiated by SPNB chairman Datuk Mohd Azmi Mohd Lila. The gas pipeline fire on April 1 caused flames to rise more than 30m, with temperatures reaching over 1,000 degrees Celsius, A total of 81 homes were completely destroyed, with structural damage exceeding 40 per cent, 81 homes partially damaged, 57 homes affected but not burned, and 218 homes left unaffected. On another matter, Azmi said SPNB will build a total of 5,450 houses under the Rumah Mesra Rakyat (RMR) project nationwide this year, with an allocation of RM504 million, to help B40 and low-income groups own homes. He said SPNB had implemented about half of the target as of May and aims to complete it all by the end of this year. "We build these houses quite fast, in three months, mostly using conventional methods as well as IBS (industrialised building system), but there may be issues in terms of slight delays (for certain applications) because (there are) necessary processes," he said. Azmi said the eligibility criteria for owning an RMR home include a household income not exceeding RM5,000, not currently owning a house and having their own land. "The construction cost for each house is RM75,000, namely RM20,000 in the form of a government subsidy and the remaining RM55,000 as an interest-free loan. "The monthly repayment is RM300 for about 16 years," he said, adding that a total of 73,279 RMR units have been built nationwide since 2002.

Nga tells opposition MPs to 'live in run-down flats' if they're against URA

KUANTAN: Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming suggested that opposition MPs who oppose the Urban Renewal Act (URA) should live with their families in dilapidated flats to better understand the hardships faced by the urban poor. He made a pointed invitation after opposition MPs failed to turn up for a site visit to four URA project locations on April 29, despite being formally invited on two occasions. "There was even a python near one of the flats we visited. For MPs who oppose the URA, I invite you to bring your wives and children to live there—you won't have to pay rent. Experience for yourselves what urban poor households go through," he said. Nga said he had extended "special invitations" twice to the opposition but none turned up. "They initially agreed to attend, but failed to show up. They 'ponteng' (skipped) again—not just skipping Parliament, but also when the government is trying to help the people," he said during the ministry's Sentuhan Kasih programme at Kampung Cempaka today. Earlier, he handed over house keys to Rumah Mesra Rakyat recipients and mock cheques for development and planning allocations in Pahang. Taking a swipe at high-ranking critics, Nga added: "If you are against the URA—even if you're a 'Tun', 'Tan Sri' or 'Datuk Seri'—the application forms are ready. "If you're willing, I'll offer you the vacant units. Don't just stay in your bungalows. Go stay in these flats to understand what the URA is all about. Don't stop us from helping the people." Nga had on April 29 led a group of MPs to visit four urban renewal sites in Kuala Lumpur to help them better understand the URA's significance—but no opposition MPs attended. Pas is planning a rally next month to protest against the Act, which Nga said is in its final stage before being tabled in Parliament in July. Asked if he planned to arrange another visit for opposition MPs, Nga replied, "No. Why should I?" "For your information, I personally invited Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang and his deputy, Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, to the ministry's Hari Raya open house, but both did not attend. "When I hold celebrations, they lodge police reports. But when we invite them, they don't show up," he said. Nga's remarks come amid continued criticism from the opposition, some of whom accuse the URA of enabling forced evictions. Earlier this year, police recorded Nga's statement over a Christmas celebration held at the ministry's premises.

KPKT channels over RM 203m for development, upgrading projects in Pahang

THE Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) has allocated over RM203 million for various development and upgrading projects in Pahang this year. Minister Nga Kor Ming (picture) said part of the allocation was channelled through Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB) for the construction of houses under the Rumah Mesra Rakyat (RMR) programme, with a total of 782 units approved for construction this year. 'This RMR programme was established to assist households earning below RM5,000 who either do not own a home or live in dilapidated houses, but have land to build a proper and comfortable home,' he told a press conference after handing over house keys of the RMR and the Bina Baharu Rumah di Bandar programmes at Kampung Cempaka here today. Nga said the allocation also covers the construction of eight housing projects under the People's Residency Programme (PRR) worth RM61.73 million, which will be implemented through the Housing Planning Division of KPKT. He said PRR homes, designed to be integrated, conducive, and liveable with commercial-grade quality, will be developed in Kuantan, Jerantut, Bentong, Temerloh, Maran, Inderapura, and Bera. Nga said the projects also include the construction of a business centre in Cameron Highlands, the development of Pekan Sentral in Pekan, and slope maintenance works, for which RM21.13 million has been allocated. He said a further RM23.61 million has been allocated for solid waste management projects to be carried out by the National Solid Waste Management Department (JPSPN), in Kuantan, Lipis, Maran, Bentong, Cameron Highlands, Temerloh as well as Pulau Tioman. 'These projects are implemented to ensure the provision of a sustainable and efficient solid waste management system, in order to safeguard public health and preserve environmental and natural resources,' he said. Earlier, through the KPKT Sentuhan Kasih programme here, Nga inspected the upgrading project of the Pasar Besar Awam Kuantan as well as the public facilities at Taman Tasik Lestari in Teluk Cempedak. — BERNAMA

Housing that puts families first

Better living: Nga delivering his keynote address at the 81st Session of the Escap in Bangkok, Thailand. PETALING JAYA: With local home-ownership standing at 77%, the government will focus on integrating features that support holistic living in its urban development. Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, who disclosed this, said the development of green public spaces and childcare facilities would be given priority to support working families. 'Our utmost priority is to preserve the humane element in our public housing initiatives. 'To that end, we are integrating features that support holistic living, such as the development of green public spaces and childcare facilities to support working families,' he said on Monday in his keynote address at the 81st Session of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (Escap) in Bangkok, Thailand. Escap is an intergovernmental platform in the Asia-Pacific region, comprising 53 member states and nine associate members. As one of the United Nation's five regional commissions, Escap promotes regional cooperation to address sustainable development challenges. Nga said initiatives such as the Affordable Housing Programme (Rumah Mampu Milik), Citizen-Friendly Home Programme (Rumah Mesra Rakyat), and housing projects under PR1MA prioritised eco-friendly designs while scaling up industrialised building systems to reduce construction waste. Nga said the newly-rebranded People's Residency Programme will also integrate the Green Building Index, urban farming, rainwater harvesting systems and rooftop solar panels to ensure that the urban poor were not left behind during the transition to a green economy. He said the Malaysian government also emphasised on community-driven housing initiatives, through programmes such as the Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) and urban farming projects to ensure that housing solutions aligned with social resilience and food security strategies. 'As Asean Chair, Malaysia reaffirms our commitment to advancing housing policies that align with global best practices. 'Malaysia looks forward to steering Asean towards achieving collective understanding for bold and urgent measures to address housing accessibility, resilience and inclusivity,' he added.
