William Haggas has smuggled a Group horse into a handicap and I suspect he will take all the beating at Goodwood
TACTICS can be everything in sport. But when you rely on tactics they can, of course, always go wrong. That was very much the case for Ballydoyle in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot last weekend. 1 Ryan Moore and Aidan O'Brien made a rare mistake and got it wrong in the King George - but they can rebound in style in the Nassau with Whirl Credit: Sportsfile Jan Brueghel and Continuous had a nightmare. But on Thursday at Glorious Goodwood surely it's simple what Ryan Moore should do in the feature Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes, live on ITV. Runner-up in the Oaks, and a horse that might have won that race on another day, WHIRL then made all to defeat King George runner-up Kalpana in the Group 1 Pretty Polly at the Curragh. This afternoon on paper the only pace pressure is Running Lion, and even if she decides to go on Whirl can sit second and is a much better horse getting 9lb! It all looks simple to me, even though the opposition includes the useful See the Fire (third in the Prince of Wales's to Ombudsman) and Coronation Stakes-winning roughie Cercene. Hopefully Whirl makes all the running, or nearly all! Day three of Glorious Goodwood on telly starts with a handicap for three-year-olds over 1m2f. William Haggas looks to have a live one here in HIGH DEGREE and I suspect he will take all the beating. Most read in Horse Racing Of course the big negative is the draw - there is not a single rider who would want stall 18. But Tom Marquand is class and I just hope he conjures up a passage for the son of Too Darn Hot who lost his maiden tag at Ffos Las last time in a tight finish. I suspect this could be a Group horse in a handicap. Up in class for the Group 2 Richmond Stakes over 6f next. AZIZAM was drawn miles away from winner and reposing Havana Hurricane in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot and he looked like the animal gagging for this extra furlong when finishing strongly in third. My hope has been off the track since then and lacks a bit of match practise but the odds are decent and he really should have strong eachway claims for Karl Burke and Sam James. The Group 3 Gordon Stakes is for three-year-olds over 1m4f. MERCHANT will be a banker for many after his Royal Ascot romp in the King George V Stakes. Haggas will be thinking he's got a right St Leger hope on his hands and I so no reason why he can't be another for Marquand. Remember he was drawn in stall 20 at Ascot and still won. The trainer won this with Desert Hero before he finished third in the Leger. Finally, a handicap for more three-year-olds over 5f. RUBY'S PROFIT has been dropped 1lb for a couple of defeats even though she ran crackers at both Epsom and Royal Ascot. Prior to those two efforts the Jamie Insole runner had scored well at this course and the draw is great in stall eight. Hopefully out, away and gone and very hard to kick out the frame at the very least. Come on Kieran Shoemark. Good luck! Murphy monitoring Goodwood going for Nassau hope Cercene
The Andrew Balding-trained See The Fire is next in the betting at 7-4, having finished third against the boys in the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot, where Joe Murphy's Cercene ran out a surprise winner of the Coronation Stakes over a mile. With connections of the latter subsequently deciding against stepping up to a mile and a half for the Irish Oaks, she is set to run over the intermediate distance on the Sussex Downs, with Coral making her an 8-1 shot, but Murphy is keeping an eye on underfoot conditions. 'The plan is to go for the Nassau, ground permitting – we don't want any rain,' he said on Friday. 'We're very happy with the filly, but if there's any soft in the ground I couldn't see her going. Good/good to firm would suit us perfect. 'We thought going the mile and a quarter would be better for future reference, rather than going straight to a mile and a half (in the Irish Oaks). We've no problems with a mile and a half as she's a very relaxed filly, but she travels well.' On handling the undulations of Goodwood, Murphy added: 'She's a very well balanced filly and we don't envisage any problems with it, but you don't know until you try. 'There's only one Nassau, it's a good race and they're the races you want to win.' Whirl is one of two potential runners for O'Brien along with French Oaks runner-up Bedtime Story, with Karl Burke's Fallen Angel, John and Thady Gosden's Running Lion and Gavin Hernon's potential French raider Dare To Dream the other hopefuls.

Crimson tide proves unstoppable in Duke of Cambridge
Winner of the Queen Mary Stakes two years ago when trained by American George Weaver, Crimson Advocate is now with John and Thady Gosden in the colours of Wathnan Racing and came from last to first in the hands of James McDonald. Fellow Gosden runner and defending champion Running Lion made a bold bid to make all but had no answer as Crimson Advocate (13-2) collared her inside the final furlong and pulled clear of 5-4 favourite Cinderella's Dream. John Gosden said: 'We knew she would run a big race but I didn't expect her to go by those three fillies. Let's face it, Running Lion won it last year and the second and third are Group One fillies. 'I said to James to just get her settled and he did a beautiful job, he has really great hands and even though he hadn't ridden her before got a wonderful tune out of her. 'At the half-furlong marker I thought Running Lion had it and so did the commentator and then this filly came along with a wet sail – it was impressive for a filly who was a Queen Mary filly not so long ago. 'We gave her a long time off over the winter and worked on settling her and she ran really well in the Snowdrop and then Robert Havlin settled her at Goodwood and she got up and won. 'Full marks to Robert and Thady who have devoted their time to settling her and she's sat last here and then blown them away. I'm thrilled but this one is not much to do with me.' Crimson Advocate was cut to 7-1 from 16s for the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket next month, but the team are yet to commit to their next move. Gosden added: 'I haven't thought too far ahead and I thought she might get placed. But she's done that well and we'll have to readjust our sights.' For New Zealander McDonald it was a fifth success at the Royal meeting having beaten off a bout of flu to ride for the Wathnan Racing team this week. He said: 'You have no idea what a buzz it is to win here, it means so much, and you can see why everyone treats the week so seriously. It's a very special place and there's nothing better. 'It was still on the edge last week, I'm not sure what it was, maybe just a bad case of flu, but I would have to have broken a bone not to be here. 'I thought about a furlong out when Will (Buick, on Cinderella's Dream) didn't put them away I had a real chance. 'As a competitor, to ride for such strong stables is so nice. Wathnan is a huge team and James (Doyle, who rode Fallen Angel for Wathnan) has some huge decisions and once he's picked, it's nice to fill in where I can.'
