At least 7 killed, 30 injured after bridge collapse, train derailment in Russia near Ukraine

At least 7 killed, 30 injured after bridge collapse, train derailment in Russia near Ukraine Show Caption Hide Caption Trump: Russia, Ukraine ceasefire talks to begin 'immediately' President Donald Trump said after a two-hour call with Vladimir Putin that peace talks would begin 'immediately" between Russia and Ukraine. A train derailed in Russia's Bryansk region after a bridge collapsed due to suspected "illegal interference," killing at least seven and hospitalizing 30. Russian Railways attributed the collapse to "illegal interference," while unofficial sources suggest the bridge was blown up. The incident occurred approximately 62 miles from the Ukrainian border, an area that has seen cross-border attacks since the war began. Rescue efforts are underway, with approximately 180 personnel involved. At least seven people were killed and 30 hospitalized after 'illegal interference' caused a bridge to collapse and a train to derail in Russia's Bryansk region that borders Ukraine, Russian authorities said early on June 1. The train's locomotive and several cars derailed 'due to the collapse of a span structure of the road bridge as a result of an illegal interference in the operation of transport,' Russian Railways said on the Telegram messaging app. Two children were among those hospitalized, one of them in serious condition, Alexander Bogomaz, the governor of the Bryansk region, said on Telegram. Among those killed was the locomotive driver, Russia's state news agencies reported, citing medics. More: 'Very disappointed': Trump continues to criticize Putin's war tactics during negotiations Russia's ministry of emergency situations said on Telegram that its main efforts were aimed at finding and rescuing victims, and that some 180 personnel were involved in the operation. Russia's Baza Telegram channel, which often publishes information from sources in the security services and law enforcement, reported, without providing evidence, that according to preliminary information, the bridge was blown up. Reuters could not independently verify the Baza report. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine. Since the start of the war that Russia launched more than three years ago, there have been continued cross-border shelling, drone strikes, and covert raids from Ukraine into the Bryansk, Kursk and Belgorod regions that border Ukraine. The train was going from the town of Klimovo to Moscow, Russian Railways said. It collided with the collapsed bridge in the area of a federal highway in the Vygonichskyi district of the Bryansk region, Bogomaz said. The district lies some 62 miles from the border with Ukraine. More: US and Russia clash over intensifying Ukraine war U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Moscow and Kyiv to work together on a deal to end the war, and Russia has proposed a second round of face-to-face talks with Ukrainian officials next week in Istanbul. Ukraine is yet to commit to attending the talks on Monday, saying it first needed to see Russian proposals, while a leading U.S. senator warned Moscow it would be "hit hard" by new U.S. sanctions. "He asked what I was wearing tomorrow" - Russell Westbrook after being asked about his player option after Game 7 loss vs. OKC

After losing Game 7 to the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Denver Nuggets' season ended with another second-round exit, their second straight since winning the championship in 2023. As a result, the organization is expected to make significant roster changes this summer. The Nuggets stirred things up right before the playoffs with the firings of head coach Michael Malone and GM Calvin Booth. And while many argue they've gotten the best out of their current roster, forcing a Game 7 against the best regular-season team in the Association, they can't risk "wasting" another year of Nikola Jokic's prime. Advertisement Several roster-related speculations have been making the rounds, including Russell Westbrook's future in Denver. The former MVP will soon be entering his 18th year. The Game 7 loss marked another disappointing playoff exit for Westbrook, raising doubts about what lay ahead for him. Fresh off an elimination to the Thunder, "Mr. Triple-Double" was asked about his player option, which didn't sit well with him. "Tried to get Russell Westbrook in the locker room to see he had made a decision on his player option for next season. He looked at his watch and asked what I was wearing tomorrow. When I said I didn't know, he said 'exactly' and walked off. Nuggets aren't doing exit interviews," tweeted Nuggets beat writer Vinny Benedetto after the game. Another volatile series for Westbrook In what many thought was "Brodie's" closest shot at winning a championship, the 6'4" guard suffered another postseason blow. Westbrook also deserves a part of the blame for it, given his inconsistencies during the recent playoffs. This is evident from his -92 plus/minus in the recently concluded semifinals against the OKC Thunder. Russ did have some big moments, though, especially during the first round against the Los Angeles Clippers. He also brought the energy any time he was on the floor against OKC. However, the 36-year-old wasn't consistent enough as Denver's go-to guy off the bench, especially in the second series. Player option for the 2025-26 season After being traded from OKC in 2019, "Brodie" has been shuffling between several teams, with the Nuggets being his fifth squad in the last five years. The veteran guard struggled to find his footing on the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers despite agreeing to come off the bench. Advertisement Russ enters the offseason with a $3.4 million player option for the 2025-26 campaign. If he decides to move on, he'll probably look to sign for another contending team — the 36-year-old has shown he can be a valuable asset despite inconsistencies. Going into his 18th year in the league, "Mr. Triple-Double" is yet to win the ultimate crown. That said, the recent years have brought heavy scrutiny and hate against Russ, something many deem unnecessary to a large extent. The veteran guard's ability to contribute at multiple levels is often disregarded, especially given the effort he gives every time he's on the floor. That's why he can still be a valuable piece for a good team. Whether that's the Nuggets remains to be seen. Russia launches war's largest air attack on Ukraine, kills 13 people

KYIV: Russian forces launched a barrage of 367 drones and missiles at Ukrainian cities overnight, including the capital Kyiv, in the largest aerial attack of the war so far, killing 13 people and injuring dozens more, officials said. The dead included three children in the northern region of Zhytomyr, local officials there said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called on the United States, which has taken a softer public line on Russia and its leader, Vladimir Putin, since President Donald Trump took office, to speak out. 'The silence of America, the silence of others in the world only encourages Putin,' he wrote on Telegram. 'Every such terrorist Russian strike is reason enough for new sanctions against Russia.' It was the largest attack of the war in terms of weapons fired, although other strikes have killed more people. The assault comes as Ukraine and Russia prepared to conduct the third and final day of a prisoner swap in which both sides will exchange a total of 1000 people each. CEASEFIRE EFFORTS Ukraine and its European allies have sought to push Moscow into signing a 30-day ceasefire as a first step to negotiating an end to the three-year war. Their efforts suffered a blow earlier this week when Trump declined to place further sanctions on Moscow for not agreeing to an immediate pause in fighting, as Kyiv had wanted. Ukraine's air force said Russia had launched 298 drones and 69 missiles in its overnight assault, although it said it was able to down 266 drones and 45 missiles. Damage extended to a string of regional centres, including Ukraine's second-largest city, Kharkiv, as well as Mykolaiv in the south and Ternopil in the west. In Kyiv, Tymur Tkachenko, head of the city's military administration, said 11 people were injured in drone strikes. No deaths were reported in the capital, although four were killed in the region around the city, according to officials. This was the second large aerial attack in two days. On Friday evening, Russia launched dozens of drones and ballistic missiles at Kyiv in waves that continued through the night. In northeastern Ukraine, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said early on Sunday that drones hit three city districts and injured three people. Blasts shattered windows in high-rise apartment blocks. Drone strikes killed a 77-year-old man and injured five people in the southern city of Mykolaiv, the regional governor said. He published a picture of a residential apartment block with a large hole from an explosion and rubble scattered over the ground. In the western region of Khmelnytskyi, many hundreds of kilometres away from the frontlines of fighting, four people were killed and five others wounded, according to the governor. 'Without pressure, nothing will change and Russia and its allies will only build up forces for such murders in Western countries,' the Ukrainian president's chief of staff Andriy Yermak wrote on Telegram. 'Moscow will fight as long as it has the ability to produce weapons.' Russia's Defence Ministry reported that its air defence units had intercepted or destroyed 95 Ukrainian drones over a four-hour period. The Mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, said 12 Ukrainian drones had been intercepted on their way to the capital.

Several killed in Ukraine as Moscow and Kyiv trade fire overnight

Russian strikes killed at least nine people in Ukraine overnight to Sunday, officials said, as Kyiv and Moscow traded fire amid an ongoing major prisoner swap. Four people were reported dead in the western Khmelnytskyi region, four in the Kyiv region -- which came under attack for the second night running -- and one in Mykolaiv in the south. "Last night, the Khmelnytskyi region came under hostile Russian fire, which resulted in the destruction of civilian infrastructure... Unfortunately, four people were killed," Sergiy Tyurin, the deputy head of the regional military administration, said in a Telegram post. Five people were also wounded in the Khmelnytskyi region, he said. 03:28 Emergency services said in a Telegram post that four people were killed and 16 injured in the Kyiv region, including three children, in the "massive night attack". A man was also killed when a residential building was hit by a drone in Mykolaiv in southern Ukraine, the emergency services said. Russian authorities meanwhile reported that a dozen drones flying towards Moscow had been downed. The latest fire comes as the two sides pursue their biggest prisoner swap since Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. AFP journalists heard explosions in the Ukrainian capital, with Tymur Tkachenko, the head of the city's military administration, warning "the night will not be easy". The capital was "under attack" but "air defences are operating", said Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Tkachenko reported "more than a dozen enemy drones" were in airspace around the capital. "Some of the drones over Kyiv and the surrounding area have already been dealt with. But the new ones are still entering the capital," he wrote on Telegram. Debris fell on a five-storey residential building, he added. Overnight attacks were also reported in the Kherson region. In Moscow, restrictions were imposed on at least four airports, including the main hub Sheremetyevo, the Russian civilian aviation authority said. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 12 drones flying towards the Russian capital had been intercepted. 'Crazy feelings' The renewed attacks follow Ukraine's air force on Saturday morning saying Russia had launched 14 ballistic missiles and 250 drones overnight, which officials said left 15 wounded. The Russian military said Saturday that Ukraine had targeted it with 788 drones and missiles since Tuesday. Dozens of drones targeting Moscow have been shot down over the past week. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia's attacks indicated Moscow was "prolonging the war" and repeated his call for ramped-up sanctions. 02:01 But he also said he expected officials to press on with a prisoner swap agreed during talks last week in Istanbul. On Saturday, 307 Russian prisoners of war were exchanged for the same number of Ukrainian soldiers, according to announcements in Kyiv and Moscow. Both sides received 390 people in the first stage on Friday and are expected to exchange 1,000 each in total. Russia has signalled it will send Ukraine its terms for a peace settlement after the exchange, without saying what those terms would be. The two enemies have held regular prisoner swaps, but none has been on this scale. An AFP reporter saw some of the formerly captive Ukrainian soldiers arrive at a hospital in the northern Chernigiv region, emaciated but smiling and waving to crowds waiting outside. "It's simply crazy. Crazy feelings," 31-year-old Konstantin Steblev, a soldier, told AFP after he was released following three years in captivity. Diplomatic push US President Donald Trump earlier congratulated the two countries for the swap. "This could lead to something big???" he wrote on his Truth Social platform. Trump's efforts to broker a ceasefire in Europe's biggest conflict since World War II have so far been unsuccessful, despite his pledge to rapidly end the fighting. One of the soldiers formerly held captive, 58-year-old Viktor Syvak, told AFP it was hard to express his emotional homecoming. Captured in the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol, he had been held for 37 months and 12 days. "It's impossible to describe. I can't put it into words. It's very joyful," he said. After more than three years of fighting, thousands of POWs are held in both countries. Russia is believed to have the larger share, with the number of Ukrainian captives estimated to be between 8,000 and 10,000. Diplomatic efforts to end the conflict have stepped up in recent weeks, but the Kremlin has shown no sign it has walked back its maximalist demands for ending the fighting. Russian President Vladimir Putin has defied European pressure for a full and unconditional truce in Ukraine, pressing on with its offensive, which has left tens of thousands dead.

Kendrick Perkins calls Shai Gilgeous-Alexander the greatest Thunder of all time, fans disagree: 'If he wins the title, he has a case'

Image credit: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander/Instagram NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins, a former Oklahoma City Thunder player, has called the new MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander 'the greatest Thunder of all-time.' However, this hasn't gone down well with many NBA fans—especially Oklahoma City Thunder supporters—who reminded him of former greats like Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden and their contributions to the team. Internet reacts to Kendrick Perkins' remarks about Shai Gilgeous Alexander Kendrick Perkins said on NBA Today on ESPN, 'Let's talk about SGA. The greatest Thunder of all-time. He already joined the company of Michael Jordan this year – three consecutive seasons of 30 [points per game], shooting over 50 percent, now he's hoisting up the MVP trophy, and now he's on his way to going to the NBA Finals and he's going to win an NBA championship, and he's going to become Finals MVP.' As a video of Perkins' comment was shared on X with the question of whether others agree, one fan responded, 'Come on Kendrick. Russell Westbrook averaged a triple double 3 straight seasons with OKC. But there will be an argument to be made for SGA if they win a championship.' Another said, 'They just can't prop up Shai without bringing the ones who came before him down it's pathetic.' One more commented, 'Russ & Harden are up there too. What they did is the reason OKC is the way it is today.' However, many noted that if Alexander wins a championship, Perkins' claim could gain more validity. 'If he wins the title I'd say he has a great case,' read one of many similar comments. Reacting to Perkins' statement, an X user also said, 'Not yet. 3+ years if he stays this course, then absolutely. KD and Russ are still ahead FOR NOW.' One user who agreed with Perkins added, 'I see the point of everyone putting Russ and KD ahead of SGA. But I would like to point out SGA is a team above everything else. Russ and KD were more focused on themselves. They didn't make everyone on the team better. This team wouldn't be as good with either of them on it. SGA.'
