Joburg cracks down on undocumented migrants in Sandton raid

Authorities arrested more than 15 undocumented migrants during an early morning operation at the Ginger Informal Settlement in Sandton on Thursday. The operation was led by the City of Johannesburg in collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs and focused on enforcing municipal by-laws and removing illegal informal structures in parts of the northern suburbs. Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero told SABC News that the arrested individuals had been taken into custody by the police. 'Well, we have arrested a few undocumented individuals. They are already in the police vans, and they will be taken into custody. Hopefully, Home Affairs will act on them and take them back to their countries of origin,' Morero said. He also claimed that officers had identified the sale of nyaope in the area, which police were addressing. Morero vowed that authorities would carry out further raids across Johannesburg to curb crime and dismantle illegal settlements. 'We are telling residents we are acting and dealing with lawlessness in Johannesburg. We are enforcing the law through by-law enforcement and crime prevention. What is critical is the court orders, we have them, and we are acting in accordance with the law,' he said. He added that the city could not allow illegal occupation and criminality to continue unchecked. Residents in the surrounding area welcomed the operation, expressing pleasure at seeing law enforcement officials take visible action. Some said they hoped such raids would occur more frequently. Ramaphosa: SA secures R454bn in infrastructure projects

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that South Africa secured about R454 billion in new infrastructure projects last year. He called the achievement a significant milestone for the country's economy. Responding to the budget debate in Parliament, Ramaphosa credited both the public and private sectors for contributing to the investment drive. 'Last year, the total value of new projects by both the public and private sectors amounted to R454 billion, the largest fixed investment in infrastructure in South Africa since 2021,' Ramaphosa said. According to SABC News , Ramaphosa highlighted the private sector's role in boosting infrastructure funding. He said partnerships between government and businesses remain central to economic recovery and job creation. The President reaffirmed his constitutional power to establish judicial commissions of inquiry into serious allegations, including claims of police infiltration by criminal syndicates. 'The Constitution empowers the President with executive powers to establish commissions of inquiry into any matter of public concern,' Ramaphosa said. Ramaphosa rejected criticism that commissions waste money and time. He argued that inquiries help uncover the truth and deliver accountability. 'Yesterday, honourable [Nontando] Nolutshungu sought to discredit the process around commissions, calling them a waste of money and time. But as we have demonstrated, such processes can have a profound impact. Think about the revitalisation of SARS,' he said. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Parents warned to monitor social media amid child abuse scandal

Social media law expert Emma Sadleir has urged South African parents to monitor their children's use of WhatsApp and other social media platforms. This follows a Gauteng High Court order directing Meta to shut down anonymous Instagram accounts and WhatsApp channels sharing child pornography involving local schoolchildren. According to SABC News , Sadleir and her team at the Digital Law Company filed the urgent court application after they uncovered disturbing material on the platforms involving school-aged victims. The content reportedly included graphic photos and videos, often accompanied by personal information such as the child's name, school grade, and school name. Speaking after the ruling, Sadleir urged parents to act immediately. 'I really urge every parent listening to go and look at their child's WhatsApp account, check if they are following any channels,' she said. 'Follow all the rules around digital hygiene, look after your children, and know what they're doing online,' she added. She also warned that WhatsApp, often not seen as a social media platform, has become increasingly dangerous. 'What we're seeing is that WhatsApp is actually more dangerous than the other platforms because of these huge channels. There's zero accountability, no identifiable person behind them and people are doing whatever they want,' she said. Sadleir stressed that young children should not be using social media, especially platforms like WhatsApp that offer limited oversight. She said many parents mistakenly believe that WhatsApp is a safer alternative. Unaware of its role in facilitating large, anonymous content-sharing groups. Following the court's decision, Meta is now required to shut down the offending channels and accounts. The ruling represents a rare legal intervention targeting encrypted platforms and anonymous accounts involved in the distribution of child sexual abuse material in South Africa. ANC praises Ramaphosa's decision to place Mchunu on leave

The African National Congress (ANC) has welcomed President Cyril Ramaphosa's decision to place Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on special leave, describing it as a bold and responsible step in response to serious allegations. Speaking with SABC News , ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri said the party believes the decision will allow for a credible investigation into claims made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. 'We are confident this will take us to the root of the matter. The process must help determine whether South Africans are truly safe and if law enforcement institutions are upholding their constitutional duties,' she said. 'Placing Minister Mchunu on a leave of absence is an important and responsible decision,' she added. President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation on Sunday night, 13 July 2025. Following explosive allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Last week, Commissioner Mkhwanazi accused Minister Mchunu and Deputy National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya of interfering in police operations. He claimed they orchestrated the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team. The unit had investigated over 600 politically motivated murders and secured more than 100 convictions. Mkhwanazi said neither the national nor provincial commissioners approved the unit's disbandment. He argued that the move disrupted crucial investigations into political violence and organised crime.
