Benoni businessman kidnapped during armed robbery

The owner of a business in Rynfield, Benoni, was kidnapped following a robbery shortly after 09:20. Benoni City Times reports that, according to a trusted SAPS source, four armed men entered the premises on Pretoria Road, holding a security guard and store manager at gunpoint. 'It is alleged that the 42-year-old businessman's hands were bound during the incident,' says the source. The assailants fled the scene in a silver Mercedes-Benz (registration unknown) with an undisclosed amount of money. The vehicle was seen heading in the direction of Thembisa. 'No ransom demands have yet been made, and all key stakeholders have been mobilised to locate the victim.' A case of business robbery and kidnapping is being investigated. A 26-year-old man appeared in the Delmas Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, facing charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. The SAPS arrested him on June 13 while acting on a tip-off about suspicious activity in the area and did a targeted search. Officers found the man with a 9mm firearm with its serial number filed off, one magazine and 38 rounds of live 9mm ammunition. They confiscated the weapon and ammunition. Investigations are ongoing to trace the origin of the gun and determine any possible links to criminal activity in the Delmas area. 'The SAPS urge the public to report suspicious activity or illegal firearms to their nearest police station or call SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111,' said Ndubane. Acting provincial commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi welcomed the arrest and thanked the community for its co-operation. 'If we continue working together by reporting criminal activities, we can reduce crime and create safer communities,' he said.
