Kumble joins state's hunt for Olympic talent, signs MoU
HYDERABAD: The state government on Saturday signed an MoU with former Indian cricketer and TENVIC founder Anil Kumble to establish a structured framework integrating academics, sports science, and sports talent identification. The MoU was signed in the presence of Sports Minister Vakiti Srihari, SATG Chairman Shivasena Reddy, Special Chief Secretary for Tourism, Culture & Sports Jayesh Ranjan, SATG Vice Chairperson and MD Sonibala Devi, and other senior officials. Srihari said the collaboration will help identify and nurture sporting talent while ensuring students balance academics with sports and sports science. 'This is a step towards making Telangana a hub for future Olympic champions,' he said. Talent alone is not enough, says Kumble The initiative will scout talent from 238 social welfare schools, impacting 1.5 lakh students in the first phase across five Olympic sports - wrestling, kabaddi, volleyball, athletics, and weightlifting. Selected athletes will train at three Centres of Excellence in the state alongside academic development. Physical Education teachers will also be trained in modern methods and sports science techniques. Kumble said, 'Talent alone is not enough, creating opportunities is more important. Through this initiative, we aim to provide a platform for young athletes in Telangana, upskill coaches, and create a focal point that will make Telangana one of the leading states promoting sports in India.'

HC slams sports authority for denying chess prodigy engineering admission, orders compensation
Hyderabad: Justice T Vinod Kumar of the Telangana high court came down heavily on the Sports Authority of Telangana (SATG) for its 'apathy and inefficiency' in denying engineering admission to 18-year-old chess prodigy Sreeshwan Maralakshikari under the sports quota. The court directed the state to compensate Sreeshwan for the academic and financial losses he suffered due to the arbitrary rejection of his application. Sreeshwan, an International Master in chess, won a bronze medal at the World Youth Chess Championship and gold at the Asian Youth Chess Championship, both in 2019. Despite these internationally recognised achievements, his application under GO No. 2 (sports quota) was wrongly rejected as "not eligible" for engineering admissions. Officials fail to verify credentials You Can Also Check: Hyderabad AQI | Weather in Hyderabad | Bank Holidays in Hyderabad | Public Holidays in Hyderabad The high court found that SATG and JNTU Hyderabad dismissed his application without verifying the authenticity of his certificates, even though they had been validated by the All India Chess Federation (AICF). The court observed that basic due diligence was completely ignored. Justice Vinod Kumar exposed the lack of expertise within SATG's scrutiny committee, criticising its 'lackadaisical approach' and failure to understand even basic terminology in chess. The committee mistook 'open tournament' (mixed gender) for 'open category' (unauthorised events) and thereby invalidated his achievements. The court also pointed out the absurd contradiction in SATG's actions — the same body had felicitated Sreeshwan with a Rs 1 lakh cash award in 2019, but later dismissed his credentials as ineligible for sports quota admission. Calling the case a 'classic example of bureaucratic apathy,' Justice Vinod Kumar warned that such treatment of young athletes could discourage sporting talent and hamper India's sports development. "This is a classic case of apathy towards sports promotion. Authorities play with the lives of young athletes. How can SATG felicitate a player with Rs 1 lakh and later reject his certificates as 'invalid'? This reflects sheer ignorance," the judge said. Rushed and unfair process The court found procedural lapses, observing that SATG released the sports quota priority list before seeking clarification from the AICF. Had they waited, Sreeshwan would have topped the list based on merit, it said. Since the academic year is already underway, the court directed JNTU to accommodate Sreeshwan in his preferred computer science branch, either by creating an additional seat or by adjusting him into existing vacancies for the current year. Additionally, SATG must compensate Sreeshwan for the difference in tuition fees between his current college and the preferred institution and transportation costs incurred. The student has two weeks to submit fee-related documents, following which SATG must release the compensation within four weeks. The court also directed JNTU to ensure his transfer to a better-ranked college by the second year of his B Tech course.

The Brief Simi Valley Police arrested four suspects linked to a South American Theft Group, dismantling a crew behind high-value commercial burglaries across Southern California. Over $600,000 in stolen property, including items from a $3.5 million jewelry store heist, has been recovered. The investigation is ongoing, and additional arrests or charges are possible. VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. - Four suspects linked to a South American Theft Group (SATG) responsible for a string of high-value commercial burglaries across Southern California were arrested by Simi Valley police. What we know In a statement, the Ventura County District Attorney's Office announced the arrests of four suspects: Sergio Machuca, 28; Manuel Ibarra, 37; Camilo Lara, 32; and Heidy Trujillo, 25. More than $600,000 in stolen property has been recovered to date, authorities said. PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Simi Valley Jewelry Heist: Slithering suspect cuts through wall and safe to steal millions During these arrests and the subsequent search warrant in the 6700 block of De Soto Avenue, detectives recovered large amounts of stolen jewelry, cash, and designer watches. Many of these items were confirmed to be those taken during the Simi Valley 5-Star Jewelry/Dr. Conkey's burglary. A stolen firearm from an unrelated Los Angeles burglary was also located during the investigation. Notably, some of the suspects were found wearing or transporting items that had been reported stolen, further strengthening the case against them. All suspects were booked into the Ventura County Main Jail on felony charges, including commercial burglary, grand theft, conspiracy, and possession of stolen property. Suspect Machuca also had a felony burglary warrant out of New Jersey. The backstory On May 26, officers responded to a reported burglary at Dr. Conkey's Candy & Coffee on Cochran Street. Security footage shows a man slithering on the floor of a candy/coffee shop next door to the jewelry store that was robbed. The suspect entered Dr. Conkey's Candy & Coffee shop through the roof. He then slithered his way to the wall adjacent to the jewelry store, then used power tools to cut through six to eight inches of concrete. Once the wall was cut, the suspect then cut through the safe of the jewelry store. Authorities said the suspects entered the business through a hole cut in the roof and then tunneled through an interior wall into the adjacent 5-Star Jewelry store. A safe containing approximately $3.5 million in cash, high-end watches, and precious jewelry was stolen. The backstory SVPD detectives were already investigating a similar burglary at a nearby pawn shop just days before the Dr. Conkey's Candy & Coffee incident, leading them to connect the two events, authorities said. Through coordinated efforts with local, state, and federal agencies, detectives utilized surveillance footage, license plate reader (LPR) data, and a forensic review of digital evidence to identify several suspects tied to a SATG, a network known for committing organized and targeted commercial burglaries. All suspects were Chilean nationals who had been in California for an undetermined amount of time, officials said. What's next The investigation is ongoing, and additional arrests or charges are possible. Although this group originated in Colombia, SATGs, like those from Chile, have triggered bipartisan calls for visa waiver program reform. A string of "dinner-time burglaries" in recent years in the Grand Canyon State has ties to SATGs, Arizona's Family reported in March 2024. When Fox News Digital reached out to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, it noted comments County Attorney Rachel Mitchell made at a press conference earlier this week before ICE formally announced the detainers. "Obviously that's a federal issue," Mitchell said when asked about the possibility of suspects being deported. "But my understanding is that there is an ICE file stop on each of the individuals." Scottsdale police said they do not comment on ICE-related matters and deferred to the county attorney's office. There are no sanctuary jurisdictions listed by the DHS in Arizona.
