Burnt incense paper that caused Chai Chee St fire sparks debate online
SINGAPORE: A fire on Sunday morning (July 13) at Block 52 Chai Chee Street was successfully put out by firefighters from the Paya Lebar and Changi Fire Stations using a water jet. However, the incident caused seven people to require medical attention. Fortunately, none of them needed to be conveyed to the hospital. As a precautionary measure, a total of 35 people were evacuated from the premises by officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). The blaze was concentrated at the lift lobby on the 13th floor, which affected two units on the floor above with heat and soot damage. The fire began after a woman burned joss paper for Guanyin's birthday. Unfortunately, the flames spread to several items nearby, and the SCDF was called in shortly past 8:00 on Sunday morning. A resident named Mr Yang told Lianhe Zaobao that while his wife usually burns joss papers outdoors, on Sunday, she chose to perform the ritual at the lift lobby, where he usually keeps items that catch fire, including wooden cabinets and chairs. The fire also caused the power to be cut out for a few hours. Unsurprisingly, commenters online had some negative things to say about Mr Yang, 66, and his wife. A Reddit user held them both responsible for the fire: 'Mr Yang for hoarding flammable rubbish and his wife for burning incense paper next to the flammable rubbish.' 'Hope they'll be charged and made an example of,' wrote another. To this, a commenter replied: 'Entitled folks not wanting to use bin below. Let's see if they get charged or not.' Another chimed in to say, 'Honestly, those barrels should also be banned… Anyone who has ever lived on a low floor knows how bad it can get during some months. If you have no air-conditioning, your options are to choke or to choke and melt from heat.' However, one wrote the following: 'As someone who burns incense, I say times have changed, and the right way to burn incense is to go to the temple and use the ones there. See also Fire! Video of alleged loanshark harassment circulates online As well ……it is rude to burn incense at the void deck because the smoke does give people who want to dry clothes a bad time….like need to rewash.' 'I mean, in a perfect world, I would appreciate neighbours who don't burn offerings. It's not a perfect world, though, and we have to make do. I empathise with you. I'd rather they burn in the barrels than everywhere else they feel like,' a Reddit user chimed in. /TISG Read also: Jurong West landlord evicts tenant after his power bank catches fire & causes damage

Family says phone that sparked while charging caused fire at Toa Payoh HDB flat
FB screengrab/ Singapore Civil Defence Force SINGAPORE: A fire broke out at a Housing & Development Board (HDB) flat at Toa Payoh before noon on Monday (Jul 14). Fortunately, an elderly woman and her two grandchildren were able to leave the flat in time to escape serious injury. Two of them were evaluated for smoke inhalation, however. While one was brought to KK Women's and Children's Hospital, the other declined to be sent there. According to its Facebook post, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) received an alert concerning the fire at a unit on the 12th storey at Block 194 Kim Keat Avenue at around 11:50 a.m. on Jul 14. When SCDF officers arrived on the scene, they saw that one of the bedrooms in the unit had caught fire, which they were able to extinguish using a water jet. However, the fire caused the rest of the unit, as well as the corridor area outside the unit, to sustain heat and smoke damage. See also Tree falls in Marsiling Park, killing 38-year-old woman Around 60 people living in the block were evacuated by the SCDF officers as a precautionary measure. The SCDF added in its post that its preliminary findings indicated the fire likely originated from an electrical source in the affected bedroom. 'To prevent such fires, SCDF would like to remind the public: a) Do not overload electrical outlets with electrical appliances; b) Always switch off appliances when they are not in use; c) Check the condition of wires regularly. Frayed wires or cracked cords should be replaced or repaired immediately. d) Do not run wires under carpets or mats, and keep wires away from hot surfaces; e) Use only appliances and electrical plugs bearing the Safety Mark. The categories of appliances can be found at f) Do not leave batteries or devices charging unattended for an extended period of time, or leave it charging overnight,' SCDF added in its post. Lianhe Zaobao spoke to the family affected by the fire, who told them that a phone belonging to a Ms Liu had been charging at the time of the incident. Ms Liu's 70-year-old mother was at home, along with her 15-year-old niece and 6-year-old nephew. As the phone was charging, it began to spark, emitting smoke. When Ms Liu's mother saw this, she immediately alerted her grandchildren so they could leave quickly. While they were able to do so, the family unfortunately suffered losses from the fire, including their pet cat, who died. The older woman said she was sure it was the phone that caught fire, and not the socket where it was plugged. Ms Liu added that the phone had been purchased less than six months ago. /TISG Read also: Jurong West landlord evicts tenant after his power bank catches fire & causes damage () => { const trigger = if ('IntersectionObserver' in window && trigger) { const observer = new IntersectionObserver((entries, observer) => { => { if ( { lazyLoader(); // You should define lazyLoader() elsewhere or inline here // Run once } }); }, { rootMargin: '800px', threshold: 0.1 }); } else { // Fallback setTimeout(lazyLoader, 3000); } });

One person was taken to the hospital and 60 residents evacuated after a fire broke out at a Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat in Toa Payoh on Monday morning (July 14). A picture of the aftermath of the incident was posted to Facebook by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) on Monday (July 14). According to its post, SCDF responded to the fire in Block 194 Kim Keat Avenue at about 11.50am that day. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the fire was in a bedroom in a unit on the 12th floor. Firefighters entered the smoke-filled flat and put the flames out using a water jet. The unit and the corridor area outside the unit sustained heat and smoke damage as a result of the fire, said SCDF. Three people had escaped from the affected unit before SCDF's arrival and about 60 residents were later evacuated by the police as a precautionary measure. Two of the three from the affected unit were assessed for smoke inhalation, one was taken to KK Women's and Children's Hospital while the other declined to be sent to the hospital, said SCDF. It added that preliminary findings indicate the fire was likely of an electrical origin in the affected bedroom. SCDF urged members of the public to avoid overloading electrical outlets with electrical appliances, running wires under carpets or mats or keeping them near hot surfaces and leaving batteries or devices charging unattended for an extended period of time or overnight. It also stressed the importance of switching off appliances when not in use, checking the condition of wires regularly, repairing or replacing frayed wires or cracked cords immediately and only using appliances and electrical plugs bearing the Safety Mark.
